Out of all internal issues with hiphop elite groups of the 90s, this (to me)... is the BIGGEST reunion that Brooklyn Hiphop Festival has made happen in 2012. For all of you who remember, Busta Rhymes was a skinny kid in Leaders Of The New School when he first got started; then he turned into one of Hype Williams's muse in the video era. Now, today... you recognize him from being on Aftermath/Interscope , then Universal , and now on Young Money . But, in order for 'July 14th' to have happened with [...]

Alarming reports from The London Vandal today about widespread raids by Police on graffiti writers, predominately retired, all across London, before being bailed until November. No doubt this is a message being sent from officials ahead of the Olympic games that graffiti will not be tolerated, although targeting ex-artists seems remarkably inefficient. Furthermore, the tough bail conditions imposed on these retired writers (some out of action for 15 years) seem remarkably over-zealous and draconian. Read the full report here . Continue Reading

Although I didn’t enjoy 2008’s Life Is Expensive all that much, news of Time Machine’s mixtape Vicious Experiments created much anticipation. The description read “…a welcome return for a cult favourite” – did it deliver? The mixtape beings with Sean Paul on hype-man intro detail. This may seem a little odd (there could well be completely plausible personal ties to explain this), however I saw an interview with the reggae-star some years ago in which he revealed his all-time favourite film to be Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, so.. Jay-Z is the subject of a $7m lawsuit, brought by Dwayne Walker responsible for originally designing the logo. He created the image in 1995, and he claims he was promised 2% royalties until the year 2015. Roc-A-Fella co-founders Damon Dash and Kareem Burke who themselves are in very serious trouble with the law, were also named in the lawsuit. Walker was originally paid $3500 for designing the label logo. Roc-A-Fella have yet to comment on the legal action. Walker’s suit, meanwhile, makes some lofty claims for the image: ”The logo has become universally recognized as an iconic symbol of Jay-Z, one of the most successful [...]

MF DOOM (all caps) is widely regarded by all of us to be like a hip hop wrecking ball who, periodically, comes back to destroy wack rappers and producers. So, it’s a brave man who takes some of DOOM’s previously released beats and strips them of DOOM’s raps for his own use. It’s tantamount to saying “I could do better than that” about the work of one of the most cherished MCs around. Luckily the brave man in question is none other than Masta Ace (The Muuuuuusic. Man) not exactly a novice, himself. So, is it a success or.. [...]
We at Word Is Bond are real big fans of Oddisee. And I expect you are too. So this interview with Pigeons and Planes is a must read. In a real in depth talk with Oddisee he reveals the beginnings of 'The Low Budget Crew' and meeting Talib Kweli, supposed controversy on his method of beat-making and the age of the tracks on his recent album People Hear What They See (which is no doubt one of the best Hip Hop albums of 2012), as he breaks down the top 15 essential songs in his discography. Here's what he [...]

Ahead of the animated series premièring on Adult Swim this Sunday night, guest writer Pardeep takes a look back at the film that started it all. ‘Black Dynamite! He's super cool and he know kung fu; drives a $5,000 car and wears a $100 suit... and when it comes to the ladies - he's out of sight!’ As the above quote from the film’s trailer suggests, the eponymous hero of the picture is machismo made flesh… at least according to the 1970’s ideal. Black Dynamite is a porage (parody/homage) to Blaxploitation.. Continue [...]

One of the legends of the hip hop world, Lord Finesse has filed a $10 million law suit against one of the game's fastest rising stars, Mac Miller over the unauthorised use of his beat from the track 'Hip 2 Da Game', which featured on Finesse's album 'The Awakening', released in 1996. The Mac Miller song in question is 'Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza (The Kool Aid Song)', and was featured on Miller's mixtape titled 'K.I.D.S.' (Kickin' Incredibly Dope Shit). The mixtape was originally released in 2010 and has been downloaded over 500,000 times. The case, according to Courthouse.. [...]
Magic: Blanc et Noir starts off with a narrator telling us of the constant battle between light and darkness and between love and fear. She reminds us that these contrasting forces are what help us make a balanced journey of self-discovery and growth. I’ve been following John Graham for some time now and that sounds like a perfect description of his music. He always delivers songs that touch on a variety of topics and issues. It is clear that he hopes to wake us up as listeners. The second.. Continue [...]

Umm not sure what to make of this, but The Cleveland Show is trying to start the new season with a bang, by bringing Kanye West, ?uestlove, will.i.am, Bruno Mars & Nicki Minaj to showcase on the first episode. Despite being one of the most elusive figures in hip-hop, Jay Electronica still remains one of the most interesting. So much so, I sometimes forget that his musical output has so far produced a grand total of zero albums. So what is all the fuss about? It has now been five years sine Jay released "Act I: Eternal Sunshine (the pledge)", on the virtually extinct MySpace. The short mixtape which uses instrumentals from the movie "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind", brought a mature sound to hip-hop which had a widespread.. Continue Reading

Since it's birth in the late 70s, a lot of people have had less faith in the rising of the bboy scene. Some people even went to the point to consider it a 'fad', a temporary thing that will fade out, or even worse... dead. The bboy scene has surpassed alot of the hate for so many years and its alive and well. If you look even further, there are many commercial companies that sponsor the scene and have huge tournaments. You've seen America's Best Dance Crew, there's plenty of bboy movies and documentaries, and also, there's people who.. [...]
