The show's stars are midway through a nationwide promotional tour, and in the video below, shot last week in San Francisco, the duo offers up a spot-on version of the Salt-N-Pepa classic 'Push It.' At a recent San Francisco stop on the Portlandia tour , Thao & Mirah joined the show's two stars, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen, to cover Salt-N-Pepa's " Push It ," basically one of the most perfect songs in the history of the English language. It's impossible to tell whether they're joking, but everyone seems to be having fun, so whatever. Watch it below. Read More...

American Teacher is a new documentary from The Teacher Salary Project . The film was produced and directed by Academy Award winner Vanessa Roth , and produced by local literary giant Dave Eggers : Weaving interviews of policy experts and startling facts with the lives and careers of four teachers, our film, American Teacher , tells the collective story by and about those closest to the issues in our educational system — the 3.2 million teachers who spend every day in classrooms across the country. Through an [...]

The Head and The Heart just released some tour dates - including a stop @ Calvin College on 10/3. The lovely Thao with The Get Down Stay Down opens. As previously mentioned - they're worth check out. More information coming soon.

It's been pretty well documented that Kasey and I are pretty big fans of both Thao and Mirah. Both get a lot of play when we are at work in our kitchen and during our home-cooked meals. So, as you might imagine, we were very excited when they agreed to sit down with us for the first official Turntable Kitchen interview. We caught up with them outside the New Parish in Oakland where they were playing a set as part of their tour promoting their excellent new collaborative album aptly titled Thao & Mirah . We relaxed and talked [...]

Photos by: Moses Namkung A decidedly female audience flocked to Oakland's The New Parish for a decidedly female led night of reverie: a nice breather from a music world that is often overcrowded by men. The evening began with Seattle's solo siren, Led to Sea . L. Alex Guy loops her classical tinged violin melodies into rich, full, arrangements. Her performance included both instrumentals and songs about bike disasters and archaic maritime love stories. Alex later joined the headliners, adding violin and synths. Portland's Sallie Ford and the [...]

Thao & Mirah just released their excellent self-titled debut as a team. The album was co-produced by tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus and features several Bay Area musicians assisting multi-instrumentalists Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone studios. The pair also visited New, Improved Recording in Oakland to record this live session. It includes three tracks from their album, as well as this nicely reconfigured version of Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield." Watch video of the live in the studio cover, and grab an MP3 below. Grab the rest of the tracks at the New, [...]
Thao & Mirah's self-titled album is probably a once in a life time production, but is not fully remarkable.

Who: Thao with The Get Down Stay Down at the Outdoor Theatre In 3 or Fewer Words: Please get up. I'll Remember This Until: The next underwhelming mid-day folk rock set. Whipping hair and quivering thighs do not a great frontwoman make. There's no doubt Thao Nguyen is a creative soul with great talent, but if there is a reason her Coachella set on Saturday was unmemorable, it is this: she just needs to write some better songs. Where's the passion? The rally cry? The Get Down Stay Down were [...]

Tweet Anthony Bedard (Hank IV) at Way Behind the Music, Noise Pop 2011 from The Bay Bridged on Vimeo . By far the quirkiest event on Noise Pop's schedule this year was Way Behind the Music, a showcase of readings of musicians' memoirs by local musicians, writers and comedians, sponsored by the literary festival Litquake . With such a curious description, choosing Way Behind the Music as my one night off from live music was destiny. Work being read and performed [...]

Single-named West Coast indie singer/songwriters Thao and Mirah have joined forces for a new album project. Last Friday night, The Bay Bridged hosted it's second annual fundraiser, Regional Bias, at the Verdi Club in Potrero Hill. A veritable who's who of the Bay Area music scene was in full effect and was complemented by a handful of local artists, craftspeople, and even chefs selling their creations. This classic venue was well suited for the casual event and added a touch of elegance that seemed congruent with the intended goals of the party planners. Comfortably filled with fans of Thao , John Vanderslice , and Man/Miracle , the show was a refreshing [...]
