It wasn't so long ago that Spaceland Productions was running a venue by the same name in Silverlake. Now the promoter is no longer at The Satellite, but has now taken over a Downtown Los Angeles venue! According to Curbed...

Toronto - For those who keenly feel the bite of Winter, even during one as mild as this has been (no snow on Christmas? C'mon), and despair that summer is further away than it's ever been, it will comfort you to know that everyone's favourite annual summertime fest of theatre and wackiness, the Toronto Fringe, is bringing the Next Stage Theatre Festival to a stage near you once again. Now in it's fifth year, Next Stage brings you a selection of remounts of shows from recent Fringe's and beyond to warm your hearts and minds in the dead [...]

Picture by Doug Hamilton Toronto - Remember when Green Day was just a smartass punk band who wrote songs about masturbation and named their breakthrough album after a slang term for poop? Yeah, I know, it's kind of hard. After winning Grammys, penning ballads, having said ballad sung by a character on ER, they're no longer a little punk band but full on rock stars and as such, have moved into the next stage of their career - transforming their American Idiot album into a musical. Now I will admit right off the bat [...]

Earlier this month we wrote about the bands that are playing at Thespo 13 at Prithvi Theatre, tomorrow onwards. The yearly theatre calendar fixture returns this year, with a strong lineup of plays and other theatre events. We checked out one of the two (the other being NCPA, Nariman Point) venues a day before the festival kicked off, to grasp the vibe, meet some of the organizers and figure out what we really don't want to miss. Prithvi Theatre [...]
![Theatre Review: Memphis [2011, Christopher Ashley]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3919755_lg.jpg)
The gorgeous Toronto Centre of Arts was home to the opening of the award winning Broadway musical Memphis Tuesday night. Now as you know, I don't general find myself in a theatre setting (or North York) but the lure of watching a Tony winning musical named after a city I am about to visit next March was just too great for me to miss out on. Memphis is a play loosely based on the life of DJ Dewey Phillips , one of the first DJ's in America to play black music on white [...]

Los Angeles has a lot of love for Wilco and the band keeps giving it right back. This time with another local tour date! On tour in support of their newest release, The Whole Love, Wilco already had SOLD OUT...
Classic may be stretching it but Theatre of Delays (Steve from Berlin) does a good job on remixing Mr. Oizo's Douche Beat . To listen and download. Theatre of Delays classes the genre as desktop orchestra. Isn't everything these days? This isn't a bit hefty techno tune. This is electronic that is brittle and cinematic. Bit of slap bass and 70s synth. Really rather good. http://soundcloud.com/theatre- of-delays

A quiet month for FG. Which is good because it gave me time to recover my sanity after the bustling October we had. Anyway, we had some positive reviews of the new albums from Summer Camp and Calexico , brought in the festive film period with 'Arthur Christmas' , and revisited some of the year's summer releases which are out on DVD, including the actually-quite-funny 'Bridesmaids' . Check the reviews out below. ALBUM REVIEWS: [...]
Once: A New Musical As I reported back in January, a musical of the movie Once was being planned for a Fall 2011 debut on Broadway. Well, it's now officially fall, (almost Winter, I suppose), and the Once musical is, in fact, currently playing in our fair city pretty much as originally promised. The reason for my slight equivocation in that last sentence is that Once did not make a splashy debut on the Great White Way, but rather an inauspicious one [...]

'Backbeat' (Duke Of York's Theatre) // Words: Gabriella Shimeld-Fenn Adapted from a 1994 film of the same name, 'Backbeat' chronicles the early days of The Beatles during their period as a 1950's covers band in the seedy clubs of Hamburg. As well as a fascinating insight into their evolution into the biggest band the world has ever know, it also charts the tragic story of the original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe , who dropped out of the band to [...]

Freestyle Love Supreme Hey folks, this Sunday, November 6 , Freestyle Love Supreme returns to Gramercy Theatre featuring Anthony Veneziale, James Iglehart, Chris Jackson, Chris Sullivan, Arthur Lewis and Bill Sherman . For the uninitiated, here's a little bit about the show (which was created Lin-Manuel Miranda and Christopher Jackson from Broadway's In The Heights ): Six performers take the crowd on a non-stop, hip hop improv ride, spinning cues from the audience [...]

I recently wrote a piece for Wired on a show called Hacked , an artistic response to the phone hacking scandal, which featured a series of short plays all based on one or more voicemail messages contributed by anonymous (except for the one person named in my article and this interview) volunteers. In the article I included two quotes from the co-curator of the project, and director of the opening play, Derek Bond, that were part of a much longer and very interesting interview. So, for fear of it festering on my hard drive forever [...]

Photos by G. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan Is there a better way to spend your birthday than by seeing Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's Steely Dan in concert? (That's a rhetorical question, by the way). Steely Dan's 2011 tour, called "Shuffle Diplomacy," finds them performing different albums (plus selected hits) on different nights. On September 20, 2011, at New York's Beacon Theatre, Steely Dan played the entire "The Royal Scam" album plus 12 additional songs! You certainly get your money's worth as [...]
Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart (respectively) during "Kissy Kissy" at the Oakland Fox, 9/9/11. All is quiet in the Oakland Fox Theatre ; the Friday night air (in which the scents of various types of alcohol and stale breath swim) has never been so...silent. The crowd waits, enthralled, hanging on any sound they could manage to hear from beyond the black side-curtains of the stage. Boots hit the hardwood stage floor, but their sounds only ring out for a moment; the crowd soon comes alive with the anticipation of what is to come. [...]
