MP3: $100 Justin Kinkel-Schuster of St. Louis, MO band Theodore got together with Oxford, Miss. multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant to play some songs and record. Eventually a new project, Phantom Limb, was born - although another band named Phantom Limb already exists so the pair changed their name to Water Liars and titled their debut Phantom Limb . Album opener "$1003 kicks off with a big, sludgy guitar riff, then melds into a kind of rumpled folk-pop that fits in nicely alongside other artists who call Misra Records [...]

I've been spending an inordinate amount of time on Turntable. In between all the Mumford and Sons, Avett Brothers, and Ryan Adams that is being played in the folk rooms occasionally there will be a track or an artist played that I haven't heard of and that deserves to be featured on Songs:Illinois. If I'd been paying more attention here and here I may have not needed Turntable.FM. But in any case one day in one of the folk rooms Theodore was played back to back with an artist [...]
...some days some great information lands in our laps, and today is one of those days. Misra Records announced today that it will be re-launching the label with Dayton native Leo DeLuca [drummer of Southeast Engine; former head of Moon Jaw Records] at the helm. With an impressive back-catalog that includes the likes of Great [...]
The Chipmunks and David Seville continue to sing the high-pitched classics nearly fifty years later.
By Theodor C This morning, when I was listening to this (Pappa was a Rolling Stone), eating eggs and sausages, drinking my damn good cup of coffee, smoking cigarettes and thinking about how cool I am, my girlfriend woke up and said: (Get a job – The Silhouettes) The illusion of my "Boheme/Rockin Roll-with-a-touch-of-lo-fi"- Life was [...] Theodor C. I will try to keep the post comming more often from now on. As before , I'm still in the folkfield, due to return Monday. But we're not the type that leave our readers bereft here at Cover Lay Down. Even when we're hanging about stageside in a field somewhere, trying to get our favorite singer-songwriters to cover Freebird . Instead, we asked Sandy, aka Smansmith, the ever-eloquent host of Slowcoustic - "a blog about the unhurried side of Americana/Alt-Country/Folk/Ind ie/Down-Tempo music" which has truly caused me to rethink the very nature of folk music over the last year or so - [...]

(Photo by Donna Ward/Getty Images) Thought I would put the good old blogger "Mixtape" for Saturday with some tracks that have been getting some decent play around Slowcoustic HQ along with some new ones I just started listening to. Some are from upcoming albums, some are from albums a few years old, some aren't officially released at all. Hope you enjoy this rag tag bunch of tracks loosely combined for a nice little playlist to import for that next moment you need some solid "folky" tunes. Starting with a new one from [...]

I've slowly been putting together this mixtape in preparation for my drive up to Madison, WI tonight. My wife and I have different musical tastes to say the least so in a way this set of tracks bridges the gap. More than anything though this mixtape was born of my desire to listen to nothing but the Bowerbirds in my car this week. I'm not sure why I had Bowerbirds on the brain, but it lead to a pretty enjoyable mixtape if I do say so myself. Enjoy the [...]

Haven't heard it yet, no problem. Streamed a bit on MySpace, but you never know, right? Well how to decide if you want the new Theodore album "Hold You Like A Lover" in two easy steps. Listen to a sample from the previous album Defeated, TN: "Wade's Lament" Listen to a sample from the previous, previous album Songs For The Weary: "Back From the War" [...]

Finely woven country tinged St. Louis quartet Theodore release their album, Hold You Like A Lover , today on Moon Jaw Records . One of the more honest works I've heard in a while, Hold You Like A Lover evokes thoughts of classic Neil Young - complete with harmonica backdrop, an earthy landscape, and a touch of Langhorne Slim as well. Moreover, the group get a little abstract and freaky on the hazy trailing off of "Death's Head." http://www.myspace.com/theodor eacoustic [...]
In this week's paper, Christian Schaeffer reviews Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation's self-titled EP. He had this to say: Last year, singer-songwriter Beth Bombara released Abandon Ship, a tidy... Continue reading "Homespun: Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation, self-titled EP" >
Going into SXSW this year, I was curious to see how the economic meltdown was going to affect the festival. I had heard that fewer labels were having showcases, and fewer journalists and label employe... Continue reading "St. Louis at SXSW: The Pragmatic, Black Spade, Theodore and more" >

Outside on the Off Broadway smoking patio, the whole hope thing was getting out of hand. "Do you have any joints?" some random dude inquired as I huddled next to the propane heater. "Joints? In more ways than one this post is not "new". I have decided not to do my weekly post "New on the 'nets" this Saturday as I am working on a "10 things that WON'T be on my Best of 2008 list" post in it's place and this band is not my discovery in any way. In saying that, I was going to mention in my short insight to happenings on various blogs this week about the band Theodore that my good friend over at das klienicum had posted on. If you are up on your [...]
