They Live (1988) We are currently living in a global recession and times are tough; unemployment is high, manufacturing is disappearing from the economic landscape, and several European nations are teetering on payment default which threatens to drop a full depression bomb on the global economy. Add to that the frustration many people feel when governments give bailout packages to save the financial sectors, only to watch gobsmacked when the CEOs give themselves raises. It's certainly understandable why people would want to send a message to those in the 1%. But [...]

Exit Recordings follow up their amazing "Mosaic Vol 13 album with this new collaborative project from Consequence and Joe Seven entitled "They Live". While both producers have a reputation for innovative drum n bass, this project sees them shake off the shackles of the 170bpm and move around the tempos freely. From the album's title track with it's doomy atmospherics and subtle percussion through to more electro tinged outings such as "Mr Spalding's Neighbourhood", it's an amazing piece of work that stands up well alongside classic material on a similar tip [...]

Has it really been two years since I was last at SXSW? Time sure does fly! The festival is back and likely crazier and more sponsored than ever. And I'm only slightly jealous of all the fun thousands of people will have as they descend upon Austin. I had some good times at SXSW '07 and '08, from working with the folks at The Current from Minneapolis to witnessing the joint Hootenanny production at Lovejoy's featuring Three Imaginary Girls and Magic Marker Records (above photo by me, of The Zebras, at the event). Well, 3IG [...]

Check out The Coolness' new video for 'Set Me Free' complete with Lucha Libre wrestlers! (Directed by Johannes Schaff ) The Coolness' have built quite a reputation in East London by throwing guerrilla warehouse parties with performances from acts such as Dead Kids , Futurecop and Crystal Fighters , regularly having onstage strippers and producing fun electro-rock tracks with big choruses like this - its clear to see why people keep going back to ' Club Cool '. Performing to over 1000 people this weekend at the ' Trouser Arouser [...]

Man, Seattle hip-hop's really blowin' up, huh? Around every innernet corner, there's a superb new posse, a sold out show, or a free EP to download. (As an aside from a dutiful rock fan: contrary to what the hordes of local "beat writers" will tell you, local rock is not dead. Or gone. Or lame. It's simply being overshadowed. There is nothing wrong with that. Rock is best served underground, anyway.) . As you know, there are shows aplenty, and posters abound. To the left there is one of the better ones [...]

This is allegedly the preliminary artwork for a project by They Live! - an act fronted by MC Shameless and backed by his live hip hop group, The Paddy Ragga Band. Unfortunately this cannot be verified.
Where in we find out what it's like to have teams of hyper-active rappers play family feud with a hyper-literate host that fronts a fantasy metal band. WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 7th 2009 GRUDGE ROCK: Rock N Roll Family Feud presents: Episode 13: "GRUDGE RAP: Mad Rad vs. They Live!" At the Re-bar (just of the corner of Boren & Howell) Hosted [...]

I came across some screencaps from John Carpenter's 1988 They Live over at the excellent I love Hotdogs blog today (you may remember ILHD from the film titles post ) and was immediately struck by the "Obey" scenes. Looks pretty familiar right? Cool to see the inspiration for Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant campaign, looks like a terrible movie though. Although Roddy Piper cameos are always welcome. D. Black and Spaceman ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth "Forget about yesterday, today won't be the same, and we won't know, what tomorrow brings..." - Refrain from "Yesterday" by D. Black on Ali'Yah Sometimes it's hard to imagine the person we once were. We dread to recall the downright stupid philosophies of our youth and the havoc [...]
The Return of Jesus Lizard ::: Photo by Abbey Simmons Day One of Capitol Hill Block Party was a massive whirlwind of activity for us. Between taking pictures of the first three songs at the main stage, properly meeting a few of our local music writing and music photography brethren, and attending everything we wanted to [...]

Fleet Foxes at 2008 Capitol Hill Block Party Photo : Drake LeLane Drake was out at the CHBP last year , and if he can find a good babysitter, he should be back again in 2009 (but this time with his elbows deep in the pit). Anyway, here's what the initial (but quite deep) lineup for this year's Capitol Hill Block Party ( July 24 - 25th, Seattle, WA ) looks like: Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard, The [...]
They Live just released a video to their song "My Weed" (which their Tumblr blog says was "just in time for... some shit I forgot"). read more
Evil Nine 's zombie schtick can be a bit overbearing, and a little unnecessary given that their They Live album stands up very nicely on its own merits.
Ear Candy blog's celebration has such a great bill because each band is exponentially different from the one that preceded it and the one to follow. read more
Deal: This is Your Body, and This is My Intelligence, Jesus! click here So I am in the middle of recordings a new album...and friends keep asking me:" Alec, where does your rage come from these days???" yeah I know...every president speech is so uplifting I can't really draw anything from that... with the pencil in my hand, the weapon of the poet, I sit over my blank pages...a book full of them... but then God, the almighty sends me an inspiration, the one above....so powerful, no CEO [...]

. If ya haven't heard the newness... They Live! is a Local hiphop supergroup formed by Gatsby of Cancer Rising and djblesOne of Seattle's world famous Massive Monkees b-boy crew and Mash Hall . They released their 'debut' the Dro Bots Saga last year, which in my opinion is one of the most innovative and bump-worthy local hip hop releases in a minute, and [...]

Taking their love of all things Thriller to the max, the new record from the UK's electro pop outfit Evil Nine is a return after a long three-year wait since their debut. They Live! , the new collection of tracks, is so fit for Vincent Price or John Carpenter films, you may find yourself putting your fave slasher flicks on mute with just this record on in the background. Throbbing beats and pounding, dark bass and synths echo the thematic tones throughout the record, like a slow-moving zombie attack that you can't seem to halt. [...]

"Don't be surprised if Brighton based Evil Nine and their forthcoming album They Live! does for zombies what Daft Punk did for robots. With stomping electro drums, '80s Italian horror-movie synths, dirty punk basslines, and a wanton disregard for genre rules, the infamously subversive dance/electronic duo create an unstoppable soundtrack for the new virtual zombie revolution." Their new record, They Live! is really awesome! I really really suck at describing music in more than one or two words, let alone a full album, so I'm going to just link you to someone else's review that I agree with. [...]
