Bastille ( facebook / twitter ) have proved themselves time and time again as one of my favourite finds of the year, and with the release of their debut EP Laura Palmer imminent - things are only going to get better for Dan Smith's musical vehicle. The title track, Laura Palmer , has been up on the Bastille Soundcloud for a good while now but is everything we have come to expect and love from their output - soaring vocals, shimmering synth lines and 80s-influenced electronic beats. Overjoyed is more of a [...]

Yesterday morning thousands of CD and vinyl releases (and some film and games products too) were destroyed in a fire of the 20,000 square meter SonyDADC warehouse in Enfield, London during the London riots.. PIAS operated physical distribution for the UK and Ireland out of that warehouse on behalf of some 165 or so labels. To give you an idea of the scale of the loss, Beggars Group alone lost 750,000 CDs to the fire. While emergency contingency plans are being put in place and a temporary partner is put in place, a huge amount of [...]

A three-storey warehouse in Enfield was set alight last night, in the riots that have spread over London since Friday evening. The building was owned by Sony DADC, and contained stock to be distributed by the PIAS Group. The group is the UK's largest independent distribution company, working with labels like Rough Trade, Beggar's Banquet, Domino, and many more . The amount of stock affected is not yet fully known, although thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries or fatalities as yet. Sean Adams at drownedinsound has noted that "stock from the DiS label [...]

A three-storey warehouse in Enfield was set alight last night, in the riots that have spread over London since Friday evening. The building was owned by Sony DADC, and contained stock belonging to the PIAS Group, who sub-contract their distribution to Sony DADC. Back in early 2000, when my first encounter with the term 'post-rock' happened, I didn't realize how you can make post something, that literally happens in the here and now. So I looked it up and discovered that the press calls an album like Ecim by Cul De Sac - post rock - the year, 1989. It still wasn't clear to me. Then I first heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor and started to investigate almost everything Constellation Records [...]

Hell, there's a solid chance you've heard of Low . The band's existed for sixteen years and have released eight full length albums, meaning Low has been around since even before MySpace (like, omgz, right?). I feel compelled to write about them, though, after stumbling across this incredible video , a performance of "Murderer" for a radio show. That ever present strummed electric, the sparsely composed drums, the gorgeous male/female harmonies... the beauty of some of Low's songs ranges from eyebrow-raising to completely arresting. They're defined as "slowcore," I suppose, which means just south [...]

Perhaps Things We Lost in the Fire was one of 2007's most underrated movies, and for good reason. How the hell do you market an emotionally honest film about two adults trying to get their shit together? Steady and mature adult dramas have all but disappeared from Hollywood, which is a shame. Susanne Bier has crafted a gut wrenching flick that picks ups in the aftermath of a family's tragic loss. A widower (Halle Berry) invites her dead husband's best friend (Benecio del Toro) to live with them allowing the family to cope [...]

(Photo by Phil Gyford ) Event gigs. I love 'em. And few have been more of an event for me than last night's Low gig at Koko , in which they played a full rendition of Things We Lost In The Fire for ATP 's Don't Look Back series. Other concerts in the run include Isis, John Martyn, Tindersticks and quite impressively, Ennio Morricone. But the highlight for me was always going to be Low, as this is one of may favourite albums ever ever. A full review will [...]
