Muruch's Vic and Brendan popped into our local independent bookstore/cafe, Taylor Books, Friday night for some coffee and books. While Brendan nabbed a Roddy Doyle novel, Vic browsed for the fiction shelves for something new and unknown. The gold-lettered title The Thorn & the Blossom by Theodora Goss was shining under the twinkle lights on [...]

According to Irreversible keyboardist Billy Henis, Thorn and Plucked Up By the Root , the band's two new EPs due out next Thursday, are meant to be companion pieces. Although they arrive on the same day, Henis has instructed me to listen to Thorn first before making my way to the more ambitious and experimental Plucked Up By the Root , which consists of a single 25-minute long piece of uninterrupted music. Whether that instruction is a matter of sequencing or mere digestion remains to be seem, but for now let's assume [...]

If there was one record that defined November on the local front for me, it was definitely the new Qurious LP, Void Vanishing —a gorgeously-crafted and mesmerizing slice of experimental electronic music that exceeded even my own lofty expectations. It's a beguiling record that deserves considerably more attention—both here and elsewhere—because it's quite simply a masterstroke of mood and celestial ambiance. Without question, it's among the year's best. Looking forward through December, there is no shortage of potential gems lurking. Just this week, there is a half dozen records ready to spring forth and [...]
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Darkthrone's seminal second album, A Blaze In The Northern Sky . As this pretty much makes today the closest thing to a birthday that black metal can claim to have (for the sake of clarity we'll ignore the first wave , yeah?), we're going to be marking the occasion in with a Slaylist seeped in old necro evil. Our selection contains cuts from the greatest Scandinavian (and Finnish, natch natch ) classics ever to sound [...]
Rue might as well be a new band. They have one other full length under their belt, but that was back in 2003... since then all they have to show for themselves is a split LP with Aldeberan (2004) and a four-song EP (2008). Thorns holds up musically to the rebirth analogy, the whole band sounding ...

RIP Eyedea . If you were ever an underground hip-hop head, this is a gem. This is Aesop Rock, Eyedea, and Slug, rapping on a Blockhead beat in about 1999 or 2000. Huge shout to Despot for holding on to this all these years. This beat later appeared on Aesop Rock’s Labor Days LP as Bent Life (Feat. C-Rayz Walz). Here is a few words from Aes – “This was one of the songs we had recorded on what I believe was Slug and Eyedea’s first trip to NYC. If memory serves, we [...]

In the summer of 2010, The xx asked Tracey Thorn to record a track from the The xx’s debut album for a special compilation of covers of the album's songs by their favourite artists. Unfortunately the project fell apart a few months later for numerous logistical reasons but not before Tracey had sung a new version of one the album most beautiful tracks, "Night Time". The track gathered dust for a few months but it is rightfully seeing the light of day on a [...]

Tracey Thorn reunites with longtime collaborator Ben Watt for a cover of The XX 's Night Time. Thorn + Watt formed Everything But The Girl in the early 802s and enjoyed a string of successful hits (our favorite being Missing of course) before moving on to their own projects. This is the duo's first collaboration in 10 years. The super talented Ewan Pearson was brought in to program/mix/play drums on the track. [...]

Tweet Tracey Thorn has a wonderful voice. Here it is on her version of The XX 's Night Time , recorded for an abandoned project to release an album of covers of The XX's songs by their favourite artists. It features Ben Watt on guitar and backing vocals, the first time the Everything But The Girl pair have recorded together for ten years. It's lovely: This was the [...]

Tracey Thorn - Night Time (The xx Cover) Tracey Thorn cover of The xx's "Night Time" finally seeing the light of day. Last summer The xx asked Tracey Thorn and her long-time partner in Everything But the Girl, Ben Watt to record a track from their 2009 self-titled debut for a special compilation, but the project fell apart a few months later for numerous logistical reasons. This beautiful cover will appear on Tracey Thorn's new EP called "Night Time", which drops digitally on October 31 via Ben Watt's Strange [...]

Gran cover. ♩ Tracey Thorn - Night Time (The xx Cover)

Mostly strong performances made Day 3 of MusicFestNW a good reason to stay up late.
