Dustin Wong // "Pink Diamond" After the untimely demise of Ponytail (one of the loves of my life) I've been able to find solace in the craft of Dustin Wong . His guitar work became one of the art-pop outfit's most recognizable and endearing features. Every time I listen to his music I get pangs of bittersweet nostalgia for the band that is no more, but I also feel gleefully ecstatic about where this artist is going. He is easily one of the most exciting artists on the scene right now and I [...]

A new video from Liturgy for the track "True Will," which comes off the experimental black metal band's latest album, Aesthethica . I've actually given the album a glowing review , and put it in my list of favorite 2011 albums . I usually don't go for these videos that choppily splice footage from various sources, but at least the video Liturgy compiles for this video has a consistent theme: The stranger side of religion.

Metal band Liturgy have released a new video for their song "True Will" from 2011's Aesthethica . The new song features religious imagery in the background, so if you're offended by black metal playing behind Jesus, you may not want to watch the video below. Read more »

Dustin Wong - Diagonally Talking Echo from Thrill Jockey Records on Vimeo . A tuner, an octave pedal, some distortion pedals, a delay pedal, an envelope filter, and a delay pedal just about describes the chain of effects that Ponytail guitarist Dustin Wong plugged into on Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads , his forthcoming LP on Thrill Jockey. I haven't heard the whole thing, but "Diagonally Talking Echo" gives a pretty good approximation of the live set he's been refining since dropping his first solo LP, Infinite Love , came out in [...]

After Monday's first instalment , a further 50 exceptional artists/releases to complete LMYE's 2011 Festive 50 + 50. Not, of course, that our centurions' were the year's only worthwhile sounds - we're intensely conscious (particularly after relishing others' deeply-felt - & very different - lists, notably Anti-Gravity Bunny 's, Gacougnal 's, The Liminal 's (& its contributors'), The Milk Factory 's, Suborno 's, Fluid Radio 's & 5:4 's) of how much more thrilling music 2011 had to offer & how partial even our expanded selection must inevitably be. "For their second record for Thrill Jockey , Air Museum , the two set out with a new set of parameters in mind. For the first time, they ditched the computer, instead processing their instruments—from acoustic and electric guitar to accordion, piano, bass, etc.—through pedals, modular synths and other analogue gear. Where the band has always emphasized live improvisation, Air Museum was recorded almost exclusively in studios in Brooklyn and Philadelphia over last year and early 2011 (barring "Live at the Triple Door," culled from a Decibel Performance [...]

This Music Wins Albums Of 2011 #1 // 40 - 31 continued from part #1 #40 Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther Sounds) Arguably Girls ' most courageous attempt yet, here the San Francisco surf rock band venture in to the realm of classic rock, not stopping short of cheesy licks, walking bass-lines or even gospel choirs. The soulful backing singers and hammond organs characterise most of 'Vomit', a song which strikes at [...]

Clear your calendar, folks! February 21, 2012 brings the release of Pontiak 's new LP, Echo Ono , on Thrill Jockey . The first track from the album is called "Lions of Least" and demands to be heard. It steps away from the more psychedelic sounds of this summer's Comecrudos and veers more toward the rock of their previous records. If the first track is any indication, the full length will be something to behold. Pontiak - "Lions of Least" [MP3]

Alexander Tucker is an impressive songwriter that clearly isn't afraid to patron old school European Folk. That being said, nothing on Dorwytch sounds like the same old song and dance. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping

Dustin Wong // Live in Japan 6/27/2011 I was sent to this from Thrill Jockey records to let me know that Dustin is releasing an album Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads which is due out in February. When Dustin performs he paints a colorful movie of a herd of tiny super human people on full sprint thru the Mushroom Forest.

woh Allow me to preface this list by noting the following: I don't really know what "psychedelic" means. According to the OED, the word translates literally as "soul-manifesting," which I suppose is another way of saying "mind altering," which I suppose is another way of saying "having to do with drugs." Regardless of the word's exact meaning, however, it's clear that a lot of excellent music can be properly described by it. You might think that most of this music was made in the 1960s, but, like cassette tapes and porkpie hats, psychedelia has been [...]

In a recent interview, Brian Eno suggested that the key to his success wasn't in throwing the rule book away, but in creating a set of rules for each recording. D. Charles Speer would do well to heed that suggestion. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping
