This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]

The Dodos (Photo: Eric Wildes) Live Review: The Dodos, Superchunk and Times New Viking Buckhead Theatre, Atlanta September 8, 2011 by: Eric Wildes Coming of age in the 90's, it seems like I have been hearing about how great Superchunk's live shows were for about forty years or so. Seeing them live with The Dodo's and Times New Roman seemed like a pretty good way to spend a Thursday. I hadn't been to Buckhead area since the Roxy. Considering the fact that [...]

Words by Brendan / Photo by Will Gunther I know I've said this before, but it needs to be said: the Warhol Theatre is gorgeous. Great seating, great views, great sound, and it's inside a cool and interesting museum. What's not to love? My friends and I made an evening out of this show, grabbing some food and drinks downtown, walking across one of the bajillion bridges to the Warhol Museum, then settling into a second row seat to have Passengers and Times New Viking blast their [...]
I've been loving Spotify ever since I started to use it earlier this month. I know people seem to be into Rdio a little more but honestly I never tried it out and am too busy lazy to check out the other service. Playlists are a big thing on Spotify and I figured I'd share one that I've put together. My Columbus Ohio playlist features music from as many Columbus bands that I could find (two albums max). The playlist includes Ron House, Royal Crescent Mob, Blueprint, Envelope, RJD2, The Black [...]

Times New Viking opened this past weekend's Celebrate! Brooklyn Free Concert Series in Prospect Park. The trio of midwesteners played a short set with offerings from thier newest release Dancer Equired . Real Estate began their set with a couple new cuts from their newest album Days . From there, the New Jersey natives continued with thier psychdelic surf tones with tracks like "Green River", "Fake Blues" and finished just as the sun was setting with the crowds favorite, "Beachcomber". Finally it was time to get serious [...]

90s motifs abound with 'F*** Her Tears,' the newest single from indie mainstays Times New Viking . Despite the track's R-rated title, the result is a pleasant, slightly danceable rocker. Stream 'F*** Her Tears' below:

Times New Viking, with Passengers / Andy Warhol Museum / Friday 07.22.2011 / 8:00 / $12-$15 Words by Brendan With a band like Times New Viking , you might have an idea of what you're gonna hear ahead of time, but there's really so much more underneath. Broad genre strokes like "lo-fi" and "pop" get slabbed across their canvas, but their music is way more forceful, evocative, and beautifully gritty than you might realize on first listen. For sure, their fuzzy and cluttered sonics will make some [...]

Times New Viking Dancer Equired! // For my money, no one does scuzzy lo-fi garage rock better than Times New Viking because they've always managed to marry the most punishing production with the sweetest melodies. But whereas their material to date as been gruesomely distorted to the point of near inaccessibility, Dancer Equired! retains all the zip of the songwriting while taking the piss out of the production. In fact, the relatively clean production of the record is so clear that the lyrics become discernable and melodies retain their obvious staying power. Front-loaded with a string of killer [...]

Tomorrow night (Friday, 7/1) Times New Viking will play its last Columbus show of the year, which bums me out. But, a roast hosted by none other than Ron House (Great Plains, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments) should add some levity to the evening. House's band, Psandwich , will also play (full-length coming soon), as will kindred spirits Mike Rep and Tommy Jay . If I didn't have to travel out of town, there is no way I'd miss this. Details, tickets here .

Tyler Jon Tyler And now three reasons to breeze on over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. Tyler Jon Tyler having seemingly hit the right chord (pun intended!) with listeners as the young Chicago band have garnered quite a bit of buzz with their minimally melodic garage pop. Maybe it's drummer Tom Cassling's light-hearted, surf-pop beats, bassist Nathan Jerde's peanut buttery smooth low end, or Rebecca Flores' steely jangle guitar work or her crisp-and-urgent vocal delivery. But maybe it's the fact that all those pieces [...]
