I've never been the biggest Titus Andronicus fan, but they do put on a good live show. They started things off by saying everyone in the audience was just there to hear Jesus and Mary Chain's noise. They made the amps feed back a bit and lead singer Patrick Stickles said "You like this, don't [...]

If you spent any part of last week in Austin for SXSW , it's quite possible you've not yet recovered. If you spent much time at Mess With Texas — the three-day party co-sponsored by FYF Fest — we're pretty sure you haven't. The parties at the 1100 Warehouse featured explosive sets from Girls, Titus Andronicus, A$AP Rocky, Yelle, the Men, Doomtree and Cloud Nothings. L.A.-based photographer Oliver M. Walker made it home from Austin in one piece and sent along these highlights.

If you haven't gathered from our volume of posts about it these past several days, there is no shortage of live music at Austin's annual South by Southwest conference. Here is a gallery of five performances that stood out to me as I darted back and forth across town: the wild southern-fried rock of Pond (who plays Johnny Brenda's tonight ); quick snaps of Titus Andronicus holding their own in a feisty set just before The Jesus and Mary Chain took the stage; an insane, irreverent performance by Barcelona's [...]

Thursday @ SXSW, March 15 Like a large majority of badgeholders and wristband wearers, the morning greeted me with an e-mail from the South By Southwest Festival & Registration committee regretfully informing me that I wouldn't be going to see Bruce Springsteen tonight. There is likely no manner in which being told you're being frozen out of the biggest gig of the festival can be made pleasant. I would wager though, that since the Soup Nazi actor is apparently taking acting gigs as his alter ego, an video e-mail tersely proclaiming "No Springsteen For [...]

@KRBronson on Thursday at SXSW (also see: Jesus and Mary Chain review): Arms makes indie-rock for people who like indie-rock, with sharp guitar and bass lines, sharper lyrics and arresting shifts in tempo and mood that toggle adeptly between nice and gnarly. Mastermind Todd Goldstein once played in Harlem Shakes, who had their 15 minutes of next-big-thing around the time they played the Buzz Bands LA showcase in Austin in 2009 . Harlem Shakes went quietly into [...]

You never knew with the Jesus and Mary Chain , right? The brooding Scottish fuzzmeisters could be sloppy and quarrelsome, or they could be cocksure and compelling. On Thursday night at the Belmont for Paste magazine's SXSW showcase, the quintet helmed by brothers Jim and William Reid tended toward the latter. The biggest calamity to befall JAMC — playing their first North American gig since 2008 — came when an almost-naked youth (wearing only black bikini briefs) jumped onstage midway through the hour-long performance. A stagehand summarily hurled him back into the crowd. "Who [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News With only a few days of 2011 in the books, it's never too early to start looking ahead to this year's festival season. After SXSW takes over Austin this March, music fans will then turn their sights to Indio, Calif. for Coachella . Message boards have been aflutter with speculation on who is being rounded up for the 12th installment, which takes place April 15-17. The sleuths over at [...]

Since 1985, the activist team behind Positive Force has been orgainizing benefit shows and events, rising out of DC's punk underground with the aim of building community and addressing social issues. Positive Force has advocated on a wide range of issues, including human rights, health care, education, poverty, outreach and aid, just to name a few, and promote healthy discussions at each of their events in addition to the great bands, art and film screenings they've hosted. You know, I was never a big fan of Titus Andronicus. Their music always sounded a little too loose for me, a little too hard and fast. Early reviews I read of their live show seemed to describe it as an anything-goes drunken revelry. A good time at a party? Perhaps. Something I want to pay money to watch on-stage? No. The band's latest album, though, is awesome. I've been listening to it a bunch, and I really really enjoy it. Describing [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Fresh from their victorious coup at SXSW last week, Titus Andronicus found themselves on the frontline of a different battle Sunday night when they headlined Slim's in San Francisco. The venue, which is owned by pop artist Boz Scaggs , is currently in the middle of its own fight with a neighbor over noise complaints. Frontman Patrick Stickles didn't tell that side of it to the audience. Instead, he genuinely asked if everyone was enjoying [...]

This is my second year at SXSW . I am now a grizzled veteran who looks with jaded eyes at the whole Shiner Bock -loving, future talking but no actual action taking, skinny jean wearing crowds that throng 6th Street and all points North, East, South, and West. I survey the festival, sniff, and say "it was better last year". Not really. I do love this place. SXSW is still my idea of heaven. We rolled into town from New Orleans and the Foberg [...]
So, this was my 4th day of alcohol & barbecue sauce fueled and sleep deprived musical madness known as SXSW. After spending the early hours of Saturday morning chasing a secret 3 am Andrew WK show, I finally gave up and passed out around I have no idea o'clock only to wake up bright and [...]

If it seemed like day one was full of tough decisions, day two really put my prioritization skills to the test. I had marked up to five or six options for several time slots, but in the end cheap beer and proximity probably played a larger role in decision making than I should admit. There was still plenty of great music and here's the rundown for the day. Venice Is Sinking Listen: Ryan's Song | Pulaski Heights Having [...]
Titus Andronicus has a new album, The Monitor , out on XL. It is “an ambitious, kick-ass, so-geeky-it’s-cool concept record about the Civil War.” On March 12th, you get to see them in-store at ear x-tacy at 6pm. Go ahead and mark it down. Rolling Stone Magazine even hyped them last month . This will be one of those shows where we look back in a year and say, “they played for free at ear x-tacy?” Trust me. You don’t want to miss it!
