When pondering Tobias Hellkvist 's new record "Evolutions" , keep the title in mind and remember that evolution takes place over huge periods of time. It is not revolution and though this new album does show progression, it does not reflect monumental change. The readily identifiable guitars are gone, replaced by tones and drone, all drifting towards monolithic ambience. "Arms" is a track built on echoing chimes and overtones, sounding something like an underwater clockshop. Or maybe it's your head that's underwater, as the cacophony eventually reveals a deep the groan of a sinking ship that [...]

Roma Termini (Train Station) - Lacio, Italy As some of you may know, I spent the last month with my girl friend traveling to every Piazza of Italy. And as some of you might know, that kind of traveling involves bus/train rides that map-out hours-long. And as some of you might know-OK, I'll stop with the tomfoolery and get to the point. I decided to break away from the original format and bridge the gaps between those brighter moments of my iPod's shuffle-mode, particularly during these lengthy commutes. This is a mix of songs [...]

The following list represents some of the best parts of my audio moments in 2008. In no particular order: Sonic Youth - Live @ Way Out West Easily the best live experience for me this year. When they opened up with "Burning spear" , and followed up with a bunch of other older songs, I went totally nuts. They are the coolest band on this earth. Sawako - Bitter Sweet This was [...]

I started a new job last week, and I'm way behind on my blog reading, so here's me trying to catch up like usual. Mr. Chop - "Zoid" "Zoid" is about as dark and sinister a mood piece as you can get, with droning synths sorta like Thomas Bangalter's "Paris by Night" , but with the beat moving double-time. ( via ) Speaking of things dark and sinister, Blaqstarr and M.I.A 's cover of "Way Down in the Hole" is an exciting bit of bleak and [...]

Tobias Hellkvist is a year younger than me, and he's been making music consistently since his teens. One of those strange anomalies that occur along the varied timelines of musical progression, Hellkvist picks up on a few well-established ideas -- those of folk guitar landscapes and postrock architecture -- and transforms both accepted forms into something greater than the pair combined, an almost 2 + 2 = 5. There is not quite the technical proficiency of Espen Jørgensen , but that is not Hellkvist's aim. "Sides" is an album of layering, of introduction and reintroduction, of [...]

In case you've been wondering why I haven't posted anything from the new Tobias Hellkvist album, I really have no good excuse. First and foremost, I wanted to spend some time with the record so I could pick the best track to adequately show it off, but that didn't work so well because the whole thing flows so well together. Then I was going to wait for Tobias to put together a single for a netrelease, but that project is turning into something far more exciting (wait and see!), so I gotta say screw it - here's a [...]
