Rock it Out! Blog: “How Old Is Too Old To Rock?”

Rock it Out! Blog: “How Old Is Too Old To Rock?” Can a band ever be too old to rock? Do musicians ever reach a point where they have to hang up their guitar and walk away? That's the focus of today's Rock it Out! Blog , as Sami ponders at what point an artist should call it quits. Is there a specific age all bands/singers should give up the limelight, or can they rock out into their twilight years as long as they've still got "it"? And does their motivation (e.g. paycheck vs. passion) ever play a deciding factor? Leave your comments down below. Make sure to follow Rock [...]

Favorite Music Videos of 2012 (Alex)

Justice - New Lands (Official Video)
Favorite Music Videos of 2012 (Alex) There was no way I was going to be able to watch all the music videos released this year. I liked so many different videos for so many different reasons it seemed silly to try and rank them. That's why I have presented my first year-end list (several more to come) alphabetically. The reasons I liked music videos this year was for a wide variety of reasons, ranging from the ones that might not have made the list [...]

Tom Waits – “Hell Broke Luce” – 8.8.12

Tom Waits – “Hell Broke Luce” – 8.8.12 Tom Waits "Hell Broke Luce" "Nimrod Bodfish have you any wool Get me another body bag the body bag’s full My face was scorched, scorched I miss my home I miss my porch, porch Left, right, left" First off, how the hell have I not done a Tom Waits song before? Tom Waits – “Hell Broke Luce” Video

Tom Waits - "Hell Broke Luce"
Well, the waiting is over. Today's big Tom Waits announcement is a new video for, "Hell Broke Luce." It's a cool video, but I think most people (read: me) were hoping for a tour. Well, the day is still young, so he could always surprise us.

Video: Tom Waits – “Hell Broke Luce” Who guessed "music video for 'Hell Broke Luce'" as the answer to Tom Waits' Tuesday surprise ? Because that's the right answer (and not a new album or tour announcement , unfortunately.) The video certainly lives up to its name, packing intense and violent imagery of Waits' journey through the afterlife. Apparently shark submarines are a thing down there. Waits' latest LP Bad As Me is out now via ANTI-

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Tom Waits Will Be Satisfied

Tom Waits - "Satisfied"
For the uninitiated the music of Tom Waits  is a challenge at best. It's slightly abrasive, filled with odd guitar tunings, clanking rhythms, off-beat time signatures and of course Waits' unmistakable vocals, which sound something like a ragged world-worn homeless man that has been drinking cheap whiskey and smoking unfiltered cigarettes for the last 50 years. While those things might be a turn off for some people, they are the things that his scores of dedicated fans love about the idiosyncratic  singer-songwriter . Waits' music is as undeniably progressive as it is familiar, a hauntingly creaky blend of rock, folk, jazz, blues and [...]

Before I am gone ...

Tom Waits - "Satisfied" (Music Video)

Tom Waits - "Satisfied" (Music Video) Did you know that PT Barnum's first museums were dedicated to religious curiosities and then he moved on to the freak show and then the carnival. He saw them all as history, I imagine and plopped them all down together and said -- you tell me what's different. IN BIG LETTERS.

Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup Speculations The video shown above is Girl Talk performing live at the 2009 Bonnaroo finale: This was by far the best moment from Bonnaroo 2009. Scarlett Johansson & Pete Yorn Should Never “Break Up”

Scarlett Johansson & Pete Yorn Should Never “Break Up” People criticized Scarlett Johansson’s album, Anywhere I Lay My Head because her vocals were hidden beneath layers of effects. However, this time, teaming up with Pete Yorn, Scarlett Johansson’s music career could flourish with the release of the duo’s album, Break Up . The idea came to Yorn when, after days of insomnia, he finally got some sleep. Yorn claims it came to him in a dream and as soon as he woke up, he was on the phone with Johansson. Two years before Johansson released her Tom Waits cover album, Anywhere I Lay [...]

Beck’s “Irrelevant Topics”: Tom Waits

Beck’s “Irrelevant Topics”: Tom Waits Beck is back again here on Earmilk doing some weird sh*t as always. The last post we made about Beck was his new Record Club , where he and his friends cover a whole album in a day, with the latest being Velvet Underground and Planned Obsolescence. His latest tirade is known as Irrelevant Topics, which will be: "featuring conversations between musicians, artists, writers, etc. on various topics, without promotional pretext or editorial direction." These convorsations will have no real [...]

Two songs you must add to your holiday rotation.

Although I loves me some Bing Crosby, I don't listen to traditional Christmas music all that much. There are two songs in my music library that I always revisit each year, however - "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" by Tom Waits and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues. Both are lyrical masterpieces. Here are live videos of each along with two quality covers of the songs by other artists. Happy Holidays.
