Well, the waiting is over. Today's big Tom Waits announcement is a new video for, "Hell Broke Luce." It's a cool video, but I think most people (read: me) were hoping for a tour. Well, the day is still young, so he could always surprise us.

Surprise, it's a music video.

Who guessed "music video for 'Hell Broke Luce'" as the answer to Tom Waits' Tuesday surprise ? Because that's the right answer (and not a new album or tour announcement , unfortunately.) The video certainly lives up to its name, packing intense and violent imagery of Waits' journey through the afterlife. Apparently shark submarines are a thing down there. For the uninitiated the music of Tom Waits  is a challenge at best. It's slightly abrasive, filled with odd guitar tunings, clanking rhythms, off-beat time signatures and of course Waits' unmistakable vocals, which sound something like a ragged world-worn homeless man that has been drinking cheap whiskey and smoking unfiltered cigarettes for the last 50 years. While those things might be a turn off for some people, they are the things that his scores of dedicated fans love about the idiosyncratic  singer-songwriter . Although I loves me some Bing Crosby, I don't listen to traditional Christmas music all that much. There are two songs in my music library that I always revisit each year, however - "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" by Tom Waits and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues.
