![[Introducing] – Don Ryan](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4051896_lg.jpg)
Tweet The debut album "Tangle Town" by Don Ryan begins with a sampling of crackling records from perhaps some long ago Tin Pan Alley recording, then shoots into the raucous "This Town" . Specializing in a heady gumbo of experimental Alt-Folk with psychedelic leanings, Ryan conjures a world that has become a sort of deranged, dark circus. Ryan proclaims "this town is burning down" to the tune of handclaps and chimes giving the statement more of a celebratory feel than [...]
Without any knowledge of history or topography, one would think that a city with as much filth and poverty as New Orleans would have a stronger hollowed-out basement scene. But unlike our blighted correlatives all the way up in Detroit, we don't live the basement life, which is a shame considering our ballooning numbers of gutter punks and the infinite uses they'd find for a dark, abandoned underground hideaway. But as it so happens, the low-lying-bowl abnormality that caused New Orleans to disastrously flood half a decade ago is the same reason that her residents are forced to keep their [...]
While I'm not a massive fan of Joanna Newsom's last two albums, but I have a deep affection for her debut The Milk Eyed Mender . This week's episode of Austin City Limits features her... and Fleet Foxes, but who cares about them . Newsom's vocal style has softened over the years, but the melodies in 'Bridges and Balloons' are still gorgeous. I'd imagine if she continued to pummel her vocal chords like she did in the past, she'd be out of the game by now. Check out her episode airs this Saturday and will be [...]

Jeremy Balderson At first, it's hard to imagine what need there is for a Craig Finn solo album. After all, he gets to run roughshod over The Hold Steady records with as many words as he can manage to pair with their classic rock attack - has he really got a backlog of ideas that don't fit that broad and welcoming template? As Clear Heart, Full Eyes , out next Tuesday but now available to stream in whole at NPR demonstrates, yeah he does. [...]

Number 10 2011 Tom Waits – Bad As Me Great to have Tom Waits back with a LP that mixed parts of his post Swordfish output with aspects of his early work. Full of hard won wisdom, melancholy, melody and bile. This track New Years Eve sounds like the prefect companion piece to the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's Fairy tale of New York. [...]

It's a new year, and every Thursday, we're going to be publishing a new list in this space. You guys like lists , right? Good! For our first one, we got to talking about Guided By Voices, who just released a pretty great album about 25 years after their first one. And that raised the question: How many artists are capable of releasing a great album a decade after their debut? For this list - alphabetical, not ranked - we've come up with 10 different albums released exactly 10 years after their respective [...]

Started thinking about this a few weeks ago and I realised it's been a really strong year for new releases – I could've named twenty albums very easily. On top of that I've recently picked up on a couple of records from this year in the last couple of weeks – the Wilco and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - ones both of which I'm pretty sure would've been on this list if I knew them a little better... So … Seven Great Records of 2011 Bad As Me – Tom Waits [...]
