5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Words by Chris Wilco is a lot of things. Okay, bad start. Wilco is. That's better. It's kind of hard to put a finger on this band's direction from time-to-time, and that's probably good. They make interesting records, that's for sure. With all this political and social unrest going on, TVD decided to give you five great albums to listen to while you picket the man bringing us down. Today marks 2 months of the Occupy Wall Street Movement and its related offshoots in other cities globally. Born in New York City's Liberty Square, #OWS fights back "against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations." Today will be a Day [...]
Yonkers. Jimmy Fallon. Mentally messed up. All buzzwords surrounding this hot rising rap unit,...
Just another excuse for a high fidelity-style list. Here are five songs that I like that pay homage to other bands and songs. 1) Camera Obscura – Hey Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken Indie disco-floor friendly response to Lloyd Cole's 'Are you ready to be heartbroken?' (which itself mentions Arthur Lee). And lo, the man himself (and the Commotions, of course): [...]

Hello folks, It's Christmas Eve eve, and I'm sort of reviving the old fashioned tradition of the festive round robin. Don't worry though, I'm not going to go into detail about travels to foreign lands or how well my gardening efforts are going (not bad, just in case you were curious). My presence on these here pages has been a little scarce of late and for that I apologise. Truth be told, life has been less Pains of being Pure at Heart and more 'pains of growing up' and kind of hectic but hey, it's the holidays and nearly [...]
Well, my Best Books of the Decade list wore me out, so my year end book list will be brief. Click the titles to read my reviews - except #5 and #3, which are Amazon links... Muruch's Top 5 Books of 2009 *Honorable mentions to two books I read and loved for the first time this year: Ferney by James Long (originally released in 1999) and the creepy gothic novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. To be a music blogger don't you just post music on your blog? Yes. So that's it? No. Am I an expert? Are you kidding me? Gorilla vs. Bear or Brooklyn Vegan, are more "experts." What I know is from my short experience, and from my communication with other bloggers. This post is intended to be a forum, not a lecture, so I encourage you to give feedback. Building an Audience When I started this blog, I spammed my friends. Really, I had one friend that responded to my feed post asking to... Read more at [...]
"Hip Hop Videos for Kids," isn't really for kids, but rather adults like SFCritic, who still acts like a kid when laughing at bad edited Youtube videos. Thanks to Youtube and 50 Cent "My Buddy," is no longer a reference just to a doll. We all knew that Disney movies had some messed up innuendos and subtle imagery, but who knew southern rap sounded SO GOOD as the soundtrack. Here is a compilation of five videos that make hip hop, kids, and SFCritic just a little more laughable. Enjoy: 5. My Buddy Commercial ft. 50 Cent [...]

There are several actors that have tried singing careers, successfully receiving laughs and boos, but this list consists of top five actors turned singers. 5. Jason Schwartzman with Coconut Records Schwartzman is known for his roles in Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited and my favorite, I <3 Huckabees. While many of Coconut Record's songs can fit tightly in the same box, some of the songs like "It's Not You It's Me," are infectiously indie catchy. 4. Zooey Deschanel with She & [...]

There is strangely few lists chronicling the Top 5 political moments in music, and maybe because the task is so daunting and arbitrary. Nonetheless, I have tried to assemble some of the most important political moments, and not songs, which the differentiation should be noted, because it would be nearly impossible to make an argument for songs based on the many factors surrounding their importance. With no further ado, the list: 5. Kanye West's "George Bush doesn't care about black people" During the peril of Katrina, our nation tuned into TV [...]
