Not to get all Almost Famous on you, but the closest I have ever come to death was while I was standing on an Athens, Georgia street with the members of Futurebirds . I was there for Athfest , the great music festival, and I had just met the guys in the band. We were watching some very pretty girl sing whose name I forget, and a bolt of lightning struck the building next to us. The top of the building exploded, more or less, sending brick and concrete falling down on the street. I swear [...]

Following their performance at the GRAMMY's last week, Denver-based band The Lumineers sold over 66 thousand copies of their GRAMMY-nominated self-titled debut album to achieve Platinum sales status. Since its release last April by Dualtone, the album has sold over 1 million total records, and this week was #6 on the overall Billboard chart. The album is anchored by the band's popular first single "Ho Hey" which is now triple-platinum and not showing any signs of slowing. Last week alone they sold nearly 200,000 copies with a running total of almost 3,500,000 [...]

Jake 's Top Lists of 2012 I listened to more R&B this year than I have since eighth grade, when I think I actually spent my own money on a Brian McKnight album. Either way, it was a good year, both for the Frank Oceans of the world and for the old guard indie rock stalwarts. Top 5 Albums of 2012 [...]

...aaaand finally, the top five albums which I enjoyed the most in 2012. A couple of these suffered a bit from being released neither on tape nor vinyl - the two formats to which I listen the most - and one benefited immeasurably from being in the van constantly for months. Nevertheless, these things are always subjective and in a way it doesn't much matter about the details, for whatever reason I have enjoyed these albums the most, and that's that. There are plenty more awesome records out there to which I have never even listened, I am [...]

Well, after illness has kept me away from the internet for a few days, I am finally back to finish off this particular list. I had my first ever bad oyster, would you believe. Given the long and happy relationship I've had with oysters over the years, I feel personally offended - how dare you do this to me after I have so lovingly scarfed down hundreds and hundreds of your slippery, salty brethren? Have you no sense of gratitude? Apparently not. Anyhow, back to the list of the twenty albums I enjoyed the most [...]

Chris ' Top Lists of 2012 This was a good year for music. It usually always is. Mostly, the more one pays attention to new material, the more they think, “This was a good year for music”. It’s safe to say that a lot of the bands I adored back in college took a break this year (save a few, see below), which left a power vacuum in my heart. This year I made a point not to be a jackass in my review, let’s see if it works. [...]

We hereby begin the very belated countdown of Song, by Toad's favourite albums of 2012. As I alluded to before, family issues prevented me publishing this in my usual slot between Christmas and New Year, so the end of January will have to do. Actually, if I were to try and spin this I think I'd make a play for the moral high ground by pointing out how ludicrous it is to publish a Best Of list in early fucking November, and that therefore my list must be far superior because I have sensibly waited until the year [...]

2012 is officially over. The apocalypse has passed and we've reached the teenage years of the 20002s. To celebrate, let's look back at the best music of 2012, from Kendrick to Fiona. Without any further ado, UCLARadio's Top Albums of ... Continued
2012 was a great year for hip-hop. While many big names dropped much awaited albums the best surprises for me came from younger, lesser known talent such as Angel Haze, Joey Badass and Earl Sweatshirt. Amongst them, Kendrick Lamar definitely stands apart, and 2012 probably wouldn't have been as good if it wasn't for his astonishingly [...]
With another year gone, the time for lists is upon us. I’ve already toiled over my list of favorite metal albums and my list of pop/rock/whatever albums, so the unenviable task now falls to identifying 20122s favorite jazz records. This was no easy feat, as there was an awful lot of good stuff to get to – and an awful [...]
[Alas, no new mixes for you just yet, fine folks. But be ye not impatient: Mixes ye shall have, forthrightly. But, first, if I may be permitted this most desultory of diversions.... In recent weeks, in sorting through and summing up and making sense of my various aural enjoyments of 2012, it occurred to me that it might not be altogether inappropriate to fashion a list of my favorite albums from this past year. This would be that list -- vertically-arranged (for ease of scroll) and with cover art, flag-of-origin, and previously-unseen-on-Plague-of -Angels MP3 track accompanying. [...]

Chad's favorite albums from 2012 - in no particular order.
I don't think Tug Baker has an enemy in this world. I can't say the same about many people I know. In addition to his Top 15 albums listed here, Tug has compiled his 100 favorite tracks of 2012, which you can find over at his music blog, About Today , which you should check out anyway, as it's a veritable horn 'o plenty of streaming new jams. 15. Diiv , Oshin (Captured Tracks) I love you, shoegaze. Forever. 14. Bat For Lashes , The Haunted Man (Capitol) A [...]

Well, the world didn't end, so I guess I need to get my year-end list up. Like in previous years, I aim to make this list a mix of what I enjoyed and spun the most as well as what also was good, technically-speaking, in my opinion. I think people often put far too much weight behind what a year-end list contains, as if what's listed at #5 or #1 is the God's honest truth. If you thought Carly Rae Jepsen's album was the best album of the year, right on. For as much as music writers critique the year's [...]

When I listen to things that i come in via the internets or that I pick-up myself in the store i look for a few things in a band's music. Firstly does if sound rings authentic in a way that I'll want to come back to it or does it just fall flat? Secondly does it have a freaking hit or a stand-out track. If there are no instant tunes it's a looser but if I am in another room and come running back to my desk wondering what that song was I flag it with some random number [...]
Patrick Wall’s skills are as varied as they are impractical. KNEE MEETS JERK: In Which a Beleaguered Music Journalist Attempts — and Fails — to Identify Ten Records Released Between December 2011 and December 2012. That Were Better Than All Other Releases in the Same Time Period. Listed in alphabetical order. Results subject to change. Daniel Bachman , Seven Pines (Tompkins Square) It’s easy to get lost in Daniel Bachman’s engrossing instrumental compositions, sounds piling upon each other in deliberate phases and creating a strangely meditative tension. Rooted in the American [...]

I think one of the best parts about compiling my year end list is forcing myself to take the time to look back upon the year in music. Around this time each year, I sit down in front of my record player and pull LPs from my collection to play them one by one. In some cases this means re-listening to records that I haven't played in months. For example, I'd loved Cloud Nothing's Attack on Memory , THEESatisfaction's Awe Naturale , and Shigeto's Lineage early in the [...]
