Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • In stories that make you go "hmm" news, Gossip Wolf reveals that Chicago math rockers Del Ray have noticed a sales boost in Germany . Naturally, this can only be attributed to confusion with pouty pop temptress Lana Del Ray? • Brooklyn Vegan Chicago has some rad shots from last Tuesday's Tortoise show at the Empty Bottle . [...]

And now three reasons to boogie on over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. Holy crap, it's Tortoise . Yes, the Chicago stalwarts return for a Tuesday night hometown treat at the Bottle tonight (one of their only five tour dates planned through this summer). Tortoise are not only one of the most important American post-rock slash experimental rock bands, but they may as well be one of the most important Chicago bands ever just in terms of their influence and activity in the local scene. Not only has the [...]

Here we are in the final month of 2011 and it is time for the Top lists. I started this last year for the first time , and I think it was a pretty good exercise. 2011 for me personally was a time of change- I was laid off from a job I had for over 13 years and spent most of 2011 unemployed. As I write this, I'm happily employed, though I'm having to deal with the fallout of being unemployed for so long. If it wasn't for the friends and contacts I made through this [...]

[iPhone photo by acidjack] After I posted my recording of The Sea and Cake at Bowery Ballroom earlier this month, I received an unusual number of requests to also post my recording of the second opener, Brokeback . I can't say I was surprised. This band, a side project of Tortoise bassist Doug McCombs, released several records on Thrill Jockey in the late 90s and early 2000s, but has been in hibernation since 2008. This reconstituted 2011 version of the band is rehearsing new songs for a record, and playing shows [...]

Toronto - The Sea And Cake are the sort of band that attracts a certain kind of fan. They put on the kind of show where a decent percentage of those in the audience are watching with intent admiration as they play. And with good reason - these guys can certainly play. The Chicago post-rockers have been at it since 1994 plying their brand of slightly jazzy, somewhat mellow tunes. Not that it was all that mellow. I wouldn't exactly describe any of their songs as rockers, but there was a certain amount of aggressiveness in some of the [...]

A Tundra | Photo by Donny Mahlmeister Three break-out-the-maracas-so-you-c an-jam-with-the-bartender reasons to head down to Panchos tonight... 1. Chicago mellow indie poppers A Tundra have literally been around the block. Mostly, just picking up strays from bands like Crush Kill Destroy, Joan of Arc, Smoking Popes, and Tortoise. The end result is a musical gumbo that sounds like equal parts Deerhoof and Joan of Arc with its calculated melodies and endearing male and female vocal dynamic. Also worth mentioning is the group's penchant for punny song titles such [...]

The slow creature delivers a duo of originals on Dirt Crew . Sustained sucking synth climber with a deluge of deep bass and quiet kick drop. Take it! The Tortoise - 2nd Chance | Buy

New York math-rock power trio Manner is renowned for the intense groove of their live shows. Turkish guitarist Deniz Cuylan is an incontrovertible musical force; he providing a wide array of sonic textures & styles, some of which are derived from synthesizers that he controls with his guitar. Drummer Cem Misirlioglu trained under Cyro Baptista and Mark Guiliana and has been active in New York's jazz venues. Bassist Brian Bender worked sessions at Electric Ladyland, the Hit Factory and Looking Glass (Philip Glass) studios before setting up Motherbrain in Brooklyn. The combination of technical expertise, virtuosity, [...]

The dusty desert highway of Tuscon-native band Calexico's 15-year career is dotted with a notable collection of passionate Latin infused Americana (for lack of another general category to place them). While the band may not be familiar to most, their music shows up in many places- from interstitial music in NPR to movie soundtracks and in their many collaborations (including one fantastic album with The Iron and Wine ). If only for these works, Calexico will stand as one of the important and influential American bands. Along this [...]
Full Albums features covers of every track off a classic album. Got an idea for a future pick? Leave a note in the comments! Richard Thompson's solo debut, Henry the Human Fly, began with a song that contained the line, "Don't expect the words to ring too sweetly on the ear." This would become his songwriting credo, as he penned lyrics that were incisive, emotive, and not the least bit sentimental, bringing them home with an equally biting guitar. His wife Linda sang with a powerful clarity, her voice full of aching, mischief, mourning, celebration, or whatever else the song [...]

Ah d éjà vu . While less than a month has passed since I harped on about Melbourne pin up The Tortoise 's new EP She Took The Tortoise Home, in the next few minutes I'm probably going to write something similar about his newer new EP Lost Forever. Not set to hit shelves until Monday (17th), Lost Forever is Torquhil Anderson's third EP in the space of about 12 months, and whilst each release hits its own unique [...]
After the first track he did for our Deep Love 50 compilation earlier this year The Tortoise from Melbourne is ready for a full release on Dirt Crew. Just after his great record on Undertones last september he spreads more of his spectacular deep sounds with "Lost Forever" and "2nd Chance". Two beautiful tracks that are journeys into space, soulful and groovy. On top we asked Iron Curtis to do a remix, together with his partner Leaves he dropped a great jacking chicago gem. This is true Autumn Music.
Who doesn't love an impromptu concert by a popular indie band? Nobody, that's who. So when A.V. Club Chicago broke the news late Tuesday that Toronto super collective Broken Social Scene would perform a free show somewhere in town, our interest was piqued. All principle members including frontman Kevin Drew, guitarist Andrew Whiteman, bassist Brendan Canning, drummer Justin Peroff, guitarist Sam Goldberg, singer Lisa Lobsinger and horn section appeared on an especially erected stage under an "occasionally perfect" Heineken billboard directly across from Wrigley Field. Drew professed his love for Chicago, mentioning [...]
