(Upcoming Release) Calexico Maps Alternate History in "Road Atlas" Vinyl Box Set Out 11/22/11

(Upcoming Release) Calexico Maps Alternate History in "Road Atlas" Vinyl Box Set Out 11/22/11 The dusty desert highway of Tuscon-native band Calexico's 15-year career is dotted with a notable collection of passionate Latin infused Americana (for lack of another general category to place them). While the band may not be familiar to most, their music shows up in many places- from interstitial music in NPR to movie soundtracks and in their many collaborations (including one fantastic album with The Iron and Wine ). If only for these works, Calexico will stand as one of the important and influential American bands. Along this [...]

The Jesus Lizard - "Club" DVD Review (MVD Visual)

The Jesus Lizard - "Club" DVD Review (MVD Visual) When thinking about audience-baiting lead signers, David Yow ranks up there with likes of Tesco Vee and Lee Ving. The Jesus Lizard's new DVD, Club , captures the first night of the band's 2009 reunion tour and Yow started off the set with the 'joke': " What's the difference between Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson? About 5 hours " before the band launched into an explosive version of "Puss". Age hasn't slowed The Jesus Lizard and you wouldn't know by how tight they sounded that this was the band's first US show in [...]

The Meatmen Announce April West Coast Tour & Book Signing

The Meatmen Announce April West Coast Tour & Book Signing Having lived in DC in the 80's, The Meatmen were a breath of fresh air when the SxE kids started getting militant at the punk shows. It is hard to be morally self-righteous when you are watching Tesco Vee take audience-baiting to a level not seen since the original lineup of Fear. Tesco Vee's bio (from his website) says that he was " [b]orn into a strict Christian reformed background, TV has spent most of his adult life rebelling against societal norms, organized religion, and the French. " The Meatmen, [...]

The Frames – North By Northwest; Philadelphia, PA (2003-10-11) Two down, five to go. We continue the celebration of my life as a concertgoer (also known as "Seven Days In Evan…'s Live Music Archive") with a trip down my memory lane way back to the year 2003. 2003 AD . Eh? EH!? Oh, wait, yesterday's concert was from 2003 also. Whoops. As a fresh-faced 20 year old, a junior in college, I was writing a lot for my college newspapers. There was the fancy-pants Muhlenberg Weekly, probably one of the worst goddamned student papers ever created. I don't think a single article of mine was printed [...]

I Like You OK: Robotic Empire

Robotic Empire Let me introduce you to something you may know nothing about. It's a travesty of the not really obscure. Somewhat of a newcomer to the Pacific Northwest, I have yet to hear anyone mention their name. Not even in passing. I live in a city of scared ostriches. Winter is a state of mind [...]

Not So New Music

Not So New Music Sholi - Tourniquet It's worth saying that I found it through Touch and Go's website, and was thus initially concerned that I wasn't hearing angry-white-dude-t-shirt punk rock. "Tourniquet" starts out imitating the aforementioned angry white dudes, with a jumpy circular bass riff that should be very familiar in both tone and construction to fans of Drive Like Jehu or (T&G mainstays) Shellac or the Jesus Lizard - but whereas those bands specialized in building those tense, sparse basslines into righteous post-punk fury hurricanes ("furycanes," which is different from "furricanes," which are furry Puerto Ricans), this song [...]

Big Black Vs Supersuckers 7 Inch Friday

Big Black Vs Supersuckers 7 Inch Friday No two bands are more concavely opposite in their genetic rock-n-roll make-up than Big Black and Supersuckers other than the fact that Steve Albini and Eddie Spaghetti have been prolific in their output and play music on a pretty consistent basis. In a drinking fight Supersuckers would win. In a cussing fight it might be a draw. Not sure about pool but it is a skill that does normally take place in bar, Albini might be a shark, regardless both much respected musicians at this here MP3 Music blog. [...]

Steve Albini talks to GQ

Steve Albini talks to GQ GQ recently interviewed noted producer and Shellac / Big Black guitarist Steve Albini about myriad of topics, including the problems with the mainstream music industry both now and twenty years ago, the re-emergence of vinyl as a viable format and Albini's repulsions of fashion and most media in general. When asked for his opinion regarding political, "indie" bands signing to major labels, Albini had this to say: "I'm not really interested in participating in mainstream culture. Participating in the mainstream music business is, to me, like getting involved in a racket. [...]

Sub Pop signs CocoRosie, will release their new LP in May

Sub Pop signs CocoRosie, will release their new LP in May "Freak folk" sister act CocoRosie released their previous three LPs with Touch and Go Records, but seeing as the label downsized last year and stopped releasing new material, CocoRosie was left without a label to call home. Yesterday, news arose that the legendary Sub Pop label has signed sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady and will release their forthcoming album Grey Oceans on May 11.
