What would it be like to see a band that truly defines a particular genre? Imagine the possibilities: dodging spitballs and projectile beer at some bowling alley in Memphis during the Pistols’ North American tour; sweating it out in a Queensbridge park watching Marley Marl work the turntables while insulting BDP’s Bronx lineage at every opportunity; maybe being fortunate enough to have caught Dylan go shockingly electric at the Newport folk festival back in 1965. Heady stuff, no? Having the privilege to stand among the adoring faithful when The Specials reunion tour rolled through Pomona late last [...]
We arrived early on a crisp New England night. The sidewalks still piled high with last week's blizzard. We had our tickets already so one quick frisk at the door and we entered the Worcester Palladium. The night had fallen. Leather, hair, denim patched jackets mixed with the smell of sweat and stale beer. The line to the men's room, insanity. The end result with in those stalls, horrifying. All the makings of a great night of thrashy metal. 4 arm, from Australia did not disappoint. They are what a good thrash band is meant to be. The guitarist stage [...]
The Eels rocked the Newport in Columbus, Ohio Feb. 24. The band took the stage at 8:30 p.m. and played for nearly two hours with three encores. There might be a funnier performer than Mark Oliver Everett (aka E), but I'd have to see the performer to believe it. E did it all, including providing mock Oscar updates (It was Oscar night). Pauly Shore and American Pie 8 were among the winners announced throughout the evening. There were plenty of hugs with band mates and the highlight: a mock same-sex marriage, where E and the guitar player vowed [...]

Review by special guest correspondent Angeleeta Sosnowski We all have our musical bucket list of acts we’d love to see live. Some are simply not possible ( Michael Jackson or Queen with Freddy Mercury ), others we hold out hope the band can reunite despite their differences ( The Smiths, Guns N Roses, Oasis ). On a warm Friday evening, I was lucky enough to cross one of my bucket list bands, New Order [...]

Review and photos by special guest correspondent Adam Harrison Leave it to the Irish to get everyone dancing! Toronto’s Sound Academy was filled with youngsters eager to move to the animated rhythms of Two Door Cinema Club . This indie electro pop rock band from the small town of Bangor, Northern Ireland is currently touring in support of their second album, Beacon . Opening the night was New York City alternative rockers, Guards , depicted in a dark fog allowing only their black outline to be seen. Lead singer Richie James [...]

Full disclosure before we get started – I consider Jack White to be the preeminent musician of the 21st century so far, embodying the past, present, and future of rock as I like to call it. That’s not too much of a bias, is it? I have been waiting the better part of seven months for the Blunderbuss Express to pass through Toronto, a city White has professed his affection for on more than one occasion, and not in the usual concert context. In [...]

Review and photos by special guest correspondent Tiffany Cuthrell Sunday August 19th, 2012 was an electric night comprised of electric Saddle Creek Records bands, at the Saddle Creek bar called the Slowdown. Electronic madness in Omaha, NE! The night began with a local fellow one man band called Solid Goldberg . He emerged from behind the curtain of his projector screen. With an incredible organ, and set up too big to fit on stage, he rocked out the floor. People all around were tapping their feet, and thoroughly digging [...]

Review and photos by Special Guest Correspondant Ryan Himmelrick The House of Blues on the famously known sunset strip located in Los Angeles hosted yet another epic performance by some great up and coming entertainers of our time. The night started with the floorspace quickly swelling with fans of Boston’s boy Sammy Adams (formerly Sam Adams), as well as fans of the opening act Radical Something . At 8pm [...]

Photos And Review By Michelle Pelissero For years 311 have been included in my annual beach trip soundtrack, and “Amber” and “Beautiful Disaster” have even landed themselves on my all time favorite songs list. So needless to say I was pretty stoked to see 311 live again for the second time ever at the Unity Tour with Slightly Stoopid last Thursday night at Gexa Energy Pavillion in Dallas. [...]

Review and Photos by special guest correspondent Michel Dussack Much in the way that Foster the People crafted a perfect summer song with ‘Pumped Up Kicks’, Cincinnati, Ohio based Walk The Moon have been gained massive amounts of recognition for their absolute standout summer hit ‘Anna Sun’. In fact, both Seventeen Magazine and MTV have both voted the song as the official ‘Song of the Summer’. On June 19 th , the band released their self-titled album, and in [...]

After a very long and hot day in the Texas heat, I managed to pull a double-header and make it just in time to see Saving Abel take the stage in Dallas. If your not familiar with this group, they are a bunch of good 'ol southern boys from Mississippi that know how to get down and boogie; whether it be in a live venue, their front porch, or a rock festival they sure know how to get a crowd going. Their is just something about their crunching' hooks and soaring melodies that makes you wanna shake your ass and [...]

Review, Photos, & Video by Mark Ambrose My evening started right after I left my day job. A quick motorcycle ride to downtown Dallas, to meet up with Kill Devil Hill during the venue’s sound check for an in-person interview. Being my first interview, I was a little nervous but mostly excited; I felt it went pretty well. If you haven’t already done so, check it out by visiting the link at the end of this review; the audio [...]

Review by Special Guest Correspondant Carla Howard (Carlita) Photo Credit: Timothy Norris NYC Early 90′s. Baggy jeans that required constant pulling up. Sweatshirts with army jackets. Timberland boots. If you were there, you remember. We were impressionable teenagers, living in the city producing music that continues to live on forever, in the midst of one of the greatest golden eras of hip-hop. The idea of a rap supergroup was in its heyday. Will give props to anyone who can STILL name all [...]

Review and Photos by special guest correspondent Michel Dussack Say whatever you want about AWOLNATION , the one thing that no one can deny about them is that they’re one of the hardest working bands in the business. Their debut album Megalithic Symphony , which brought us the hit single "Sail", has been around for a bit over a year, and they’ve already hit up New York City on three separate tours. On May 19 th , they brought their energetic live [...]

Photos via stevenhle.tumblr.com, Review by special guest correspondent Angeleeta Sosnowski Looking through my list of most anticipated shows in the first half of the year, I placed a large star next to the sold out Florence and the Machine event that kicked of May at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas. The show sold out so quickly, many of my seasoned concert crew wasn’t able to get tickets. Flo is that hot right now, touring to support her sophomore album Ceremonials . Unfortunately we weren't able to catch much [...]

Metal Evolution is probably one of the best series ever recorded on the genre and it's offspring. There is a great episode on Nu Metal featuring Korn . It got me thinking about the band, and so did learning about how much their newest record was influenced by EDM. To be honest, I mostly ignored The Path Of Totality when it initially was released last year. I didn't like the 1 or 2 songs that I actually heard. And instead of giving the [...]

Review and photos by Special Guest Correspondant Michelle Pelissero This review might be a tad biased considering I had spun my favorite Delta Spirit album, History From Below , a few dozen times the week of the show. Even though I absolutely adore the band, I had no idea what their live show would be like. Being the pessimist that I am, I expected the worst. Saturday night’s show at the [...]

Review by Special Guest Correspondant Carla Howard (Carlita) Photo Credit: Timothy Norris Nothing makes me happier as a passionate music fan than when two artists I love separately decide to tour together. Two different energies, flows, artistic expressions for the price of one. Can’t beat that. Couldn’t have been more excited when I learned Lenny Kravitz and Raphael Saadiq were touring together. Saw both last year at one [...]

Everyone likes a good review. Whether it's for an album or a live show, we all like to read the best about the artists that we love and admire. But those artists are humans too. Sometimes the band changes direction and release a cd we don't enjoy, and other times their live show performance might not live up to our expectations. As music critics who take our passion for music and journalism seriously, we have to occasionally report those instances. Here is a Young The Giant live show review from special guest contributor Angeleeta Sosnowski from [...]

Photo credits: via Brooklyn Vegan Review by special guest correspondent Angeleeta Sosnowski To say I’m a fan of Bjork is a bit of an understatement. A Tuesday night recently at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan was my 7th, or maybe 8th time, to see her live. I have travelled across the country all but one of those times, so obviously my expectations were high. [...]
