Maksim and Darya are two seventeen year olds that spend their days crafting dream pop gems in the Russian city of Novosibirsk. Their music, recorded under the name Heatherwood , is a product of their loves: 80’s scandinavian aesthetics, old analogue synths, japanese toy keyboards, and each other. Their bedrooms have echoed dreamy melodies since the beginning of 2012. The young couple's debut EP, FYR (meaning light in Swedish), brims with the pair's youthful candor. The four-track EP was released today through my new pop label Trade Winds . Now, the future of Heatherwood, and perhaps the pair's relationship, [...]

On trade winds— I’m headed for those southern shores. The sun shines. The moon climbs. Havana, Cuba. Escucharemos will return in three weeks. There’s so much on the horizon. Just a dream away. A veces sueño. Adiós, Jordan

It's hard to believe July is already here. The mid-point of the year has arrived, and for many sites like this it marks a time to evaluate 20112s releases thus far and attempt to order them in some way. I consider doing so to be somewhat premature and unnecessary; I know of many albums the [...]
Let’s start with a cliché; why not? These are the building blocks of popular music. In the balancing act each song represents, the scales are always tilted heavily in one direction to allow for monolithic (both in the religious and ominous all-encompassing sense) acts of melody and arrangement. The lyrics must be repetitious and innocuous. [...]
...when you're the only surfer boy around. The Trade Winds hit the charts on Red Bird Records in 1965 with a surf record about that hot bed of surfing, New York City. Or, more specifically, missing their home state of California after moving to New York. I've written several pieces recently about groups like the Knickerbockers and the Buckinghams , two American bands in the Sixties who attempted to emulate the success of British groups like the Beatles. But popular groups of all kinds have always had their imitators, and it's sometimes fun to rediscover one like the Trade Winds, who seemed to bear more than a passing resemblance to the Beach Boys. In fact, the group's biggest hit, " New York's A Lonely Town ," might have owed a lot of its popularity to that connection. The Trade [...]

While the Brill Building (at 1619 Broadway) is known worldwide as the place where 1960's pop music was born (or least written down with pencil and paper), up the street at 1650 Broadway there was plenty of action to be found, as well. By some accounts, 1650 was more the epicenter of pop music than its famous cousin a few blocks south. 1650 was the location of Aldon Music , the music company founded by Don Kirschner and Al Nevins, the publishing home to many of the great "Brill Building" songwriters, including Doc [...]
