Passenger & Pilot, Trainwreck Riders & Whiskerman pull into the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

(Note to the reader: This is an epic tale, long in the telling. If you doubt your mettle, please at least scroll down and check out the respective headliners, who were both rad). Sometimes the music options in this town present such a tasty dilemma. Friday night saw The Ferocious Few at Fort Mason, Cap'n Jazz at Bimbo's, and down in Polk Gulch, two shows too good to pass up. I'm set to cover Kelley Stoltz at the Hemlock , while some of my familiars have committed [...]

It feels like a very long time ago at this point, but for the inaugural year of the Treasure Island Music Festival (a.k.a. September 2007), Trainwreck Riders managed to snag one of the coveted opening "local band" slots. They've played Noise Pop and SxSW, they won the SF Guardian 'Goldie' award for Best Local Band, they've toured with the likes of Two Gallants, Langhorne Slim, and the Devil Makes Three . . . etc. It comes as no surprise that the band will be headlining the Great American Music Hall [...]

Sandwitches - "Grey Wizard" Secret Seven Records recently released In a Cloud , a compilation of 14 unreleased tracks from some of San Francisco's best up-and-coming talent. The catch? It's a limited vinyl release with only 500 copies. But something tells me this thing will make its way into digital format sooner or later. You can order it online over yonder . Side One: Sonny & The Sunsets – "Heart Of Sadness" Fresh & Onlys – "You Owe Your Life To The [...]

Saturday is Noise Pop's busiest day, with more events than you can shake a stick at (and who shakes sticks anyways?). Before even getting to the nighttime stuff, three daytime events are all worth noting. Fans of independent crafts and design should swing by the free Pop and Shop at the Verdi Club, while aspiring moguls and music tech geeks should head over to Industry Noise for panels about the state of indie music and networking opportunities galore. If you go to either, though, I'd plan to head out in time to [...]
Noise Pop Death March begins! What with all the head-turning headliners, it can be easy to miss one of the major highlights of Noise Pop : loads of interesting openers. This is where you find the gems - these are no random acts thrown on by the label or venue, each show has like three opening bands that have all been given the once-over by someone who was paying attention. As I've said repeatedly and with relish, festivals are where you get the chance to see a ton of acts you've never heard or even [...]

Last year we blogged about the excellent Sandwitches and their most arresting album, the curiously titled How To Make Ambient Sadcake . They have just contributed a cracking track called Grey Wizard to a new vinyl only compilation called In A Cloud: New Sounds From San Francisco (you can buy it here from Secret Seven Records ). As well as the delightfully skewed and fuzzy pop of these folks you get The Fresh & [...]

It's September. College kids are strutting back on campus, the hefty guys are throwing some footballs on Saturday and some coolness is entering the air. And we're not talking about the weather. We're talking about the frat boys who now listen to Dirty Projectors (wait, are they cool? I don't know...). To bridge the worlds of indie rock and college football, Deckfight has asked Bryan and Langston from The Lawn Chair Boys to illuminate us on what college football would look like with an indie rock touch. And [...]

New Wax On their new album The Perch , San Francisco's Trainwreck Riders, who have been labeled "cowpunk", meld a wide variety of genres and sounds. A track like "Three To The Clouds" seems like it could easily serve as a backtrack to Jay Farrar's vocals, which is understandable considering the band is often compared to Uncle Tupelo. There is certainly a familiarity about Trainwreck Riders' sound, who have cited the Meat Puppets and Dinosaur Jr. as influences, but it's a good familiarity comparable to the smell [...]

With such a backlog of music due to limited blog time the past couple weeks, we're just going to offer a brief comment or two with the music as I do feel somewhat guilty that much of this has been sitting here so long. I've a couple artists/releases to spotlight and will do them up as separate posts over the weekend. I do want to thank all the bands, artists and labels that have sent music our way for being so patient while I've been so busy. • • • • Swedish Indie/Psychedelic Rockers [...]

DOWNLOAD: Trainwreck Riders - "Safety of a Back" (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Trainwreck Riders - "Chug Along" (MP3) Trainwreck Riders finally got around to releasing a follow-up to 2006's Lonely Road Revival . The new disc, The Perch , came out in May on Alive Records . The last time that I remember the band being in town, they put on a wild show at the Cake Shop. Here is one of my favorite quotes describing the band: " Trainwreck Riders play [...]
