Top Photos of the Month (October)

Top Photos of the Month (October) “The music is made first, and the interviews or photos to keep it alive come later as a necessary evil, I suppose.” -Jack White Event: Bat For Lashes at London's HMV Forum Photographer: Nathan Dainty What Nathan Says: "Natasha Khan is a fascinating though challenging subject. She commands the stage, forever on the move and this shot hopefully captures some of that highly focused energy." Event [...]

Treasure Island Festival Diary: Day 2

Treasure Island, Day Two: It was sunnier, and the music was, well, more guitar driven. It was also the first time in the six years of the festival that I was here for every note of music. I made it to the festival at 11:55, and walked in for the opening note of Imperial Teen. [...]

Treasure Island Music Festival 2012 Diary: Day 1

Normally the Treasure Island Festival likes to separate Saturday and Sunday by genre: Saturday is the electronic day and Sunday is the rock day. However, as the lines blur between the two worlds, so did the festival. As Sunday will have a fair amount on laptops, Saturday seemed to have a healthy dose of live [...]

[Festival Review] Treasure Island Music Festival, San Francisco

[Festival Review] Treasure Island Music Festival, San Francisco Treasure Island Music Festival has long touted itself as an intimate and authentic experience in San Francisco music and culture. Attendees are rewarded well in advance with a promise from the event's coordinators that the eclectic lineup will be devoid of all scheduling conflicts between the festivals two main stages, both adjacent to the city's bay shoreline.  Therefore, eliminating any potential for those tough decisions while budgeting your time between favorite bands, food trucks, a silent disco and all other festival amenities one could hope for. With that being said, the two-day fall music and culture getaway was [...]

Review & Photos: Treasure Island Music Festival 2012

The sixth annual Treasure Island Music Festival took place this past weekend, and yet again proved a major success, with a diverse lineup of musicians performing enjoyable sets at one of the most beautiful festival venues in the world. The Bay Bridged was there was it all, catching both days' performances amid the throngs of other music lovers. Saturday, October 13th Highlights: Grimes, Public Enemy, SBTRKT Saturday kicked off with an energetic performance from San Francisco-via-Toronto rock band Dirty Ghosts , who performed cuts from their [...]

Treasure Island Music Festival 2012 Kicks Off 5th Anniversary Weekend with Girl Talk, Grimes, Toro Y Moi, Matthew Dear, Public Enemy, SBTRKT, The Presets

Cloudy, rainy weather in the San Francisco Bay Area earlier last week cleared out just in time on Saturday for Day One of the 5th Annual Treasure Island Music Festival. Under radiant, blue skies, and basking in the warm, golden sunshine, thousands of T.I. festival goers were treated to electrifying performances from artists like Grimes, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Festival Review: Treasure Island Music Festival 2012

Festival Review: Treasure Island Music Festival 2012 San Francisco's  Treasure Island Music Festival  is a bit under-appreciated by outsiders, but that makes for an ideal situation, as there's room to breathe and far fewer people in attendance than its surrounding competition (i.e. Outside Lands, Hardly Strictly). The festival's close proximity to the city's trademark bay only adds to the experience, as well. The transition from day to night is unforgettable; the autumn-tinged sunset that hugged the surrounding skyline on Sunday evening was something ripped out of  National Geographic . While most of the bands on this year's lineup are currently or have been touring for the [...]

Joanna Newsom debuts new song at Treasure Island Music Festival

Joanna Newsom debuts new song at Treasure Island Music Festival Photo by Ted Maider Joanna Newsom made a rare festival appearance at this past weekend's Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco, CA. Under a rich blue sky and whilst sporting a quaint tablecloth dress, Newsom debuted a new piano-centric track allegedly titled, "Look and Despair" (via Pitchfork ). Throughout the five minute ballad, she speaks of "mothers and daughters" and how "above them the parades mark the passing of age." It's rich, dense stuff, but what else would you expect from the author behind [...]

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Divine Fits

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Divine Fits Despite the high indie market value of both Dan Boeckner (Handsome Furs/Wolf Parade) and Britt Daniel (Spoon), I somehow doubt anyone was literally shaking in excitement when they heard the news in June announcing this new indie super group featuring both well-known musicians. Called Divine Fits , my preconceived notions about the band were actually not really notions at all but rather premonitions — like two cyclist teammates, Daniel and Boeckner drift carefully close to one another, never impeding the other's progress, but never really pushing one another forward either. The group's debut [...]

Treasure Island Interview: Australia’s The Presets reemerge with first album in four years

Treasure Island Interview: Australia’s The Presets reemerge with first album in four years Four years have lapsed since Australian electronic dance duo The Presets last released a record. In the time since 2008’s Apocalypso went three-times platinum in their native land, both drummer-keyboardist Kim Moyes and singer-keyboardist Julian Hamilton became fathers. Understandably, the two now have less time to work on music or even be active in the club scene that spawned the band. Moyes and Hamilton met in 1995 while studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The Presets were formed after the two realized they shared a darker edge of electronic [...]

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Grimes

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Grimes This will in no way be an impartial, objective preview. I was ready to name Grimes ' latest effort Visions the "Best Album of 20123 after I heard it for the first time. I was ready to bestow the title of "Best Music Video of 20123 on her video for Visions stand-out cut "Oblivion". For my money, Grimes is making some of the most intriguing music today. Seriously, just watch the "Oblivion" video, below. I've showed it to at least 20 people at this [...]

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Matthew Dear

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Matthew Dear There aren't many new adjectives to assign or much more praise to give when discussing dapper DJ/producer/front man Matthew Dear . Since his beginnings as co-founder of multi-level curator Ghostly International and its sister platform Spectral Sound , Dear has released four full-length albums, DJ'd and performed across the globe, and maintained a sleek performance style now synonymous with the musician's brand. When positioned at the DJ booth Dear is a force, but accompanied by a live band and microphone is where the talent comes full circle. Each release [...]

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Youth Lagoon

Don’t miss at TIMF 2012: Youth Lagoon This year's Treasure Island Musical Festival is right around the corner – this Saturday and Sunday to be exact. As usual, Saturday features more electronic acts such as Girl Talk, Grimes, and hip-hop legends Public Enemy, while Sunday provides an eclectic range of indie rock. One act to look out for on Sunday is Youth Lagoon , the introspective bedroom-pop project of Boise's Trevor Powers. His honest, emotional debut The Year of Hibernation still resonates within the hearts of indie fans after it was [...]
