It's been awhile since I've posted a Google Doodle, because, quite frankly, I've just grown bored and tired of them. However, I'll make the exception today, because Google put together a nifty little homage to designer Saul Bass , with a musical interlude from Dave Brubeck's "Unsquare Dance." The following film title sequences are referenced: Psycho, The Man with the Golden Arm, Spartacus, West Side Story, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Anatomy of a Murder, Ocean's 11 , and Around the World in Eighty Days. Light up a smoke. Pour two fingers [...]

In honor of Cleveland's hometown hero, Charles Ramsey, Tuesday night's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" spoofed a History Channel special that struck a genuine chord of laughter among the live audience at ABC Studios in Los Angeles - likely because, Ramsey's boisterous personality aside, the segment didn't seem out of reality's reach. The History Channel hasn't exactly maintained its street cred in recent months. Of course, that's not to say that Amanda Berry rescuer isn't a man of honor who can teach the rest of us a little humility. On Tuesday he told Anderson Cooper [...]

Here is something that should make most of us feel really old. Hail To The Thief from Radiohead was released 10 years ago! The bright side of this realization is that the album is being celebrated, and the celebration is happening right here in Cincinnati. The Marburg Collective is a home-grown, communally driven record label, event-planning and media arts production center. Its infrastructural organization is fabricated by the carefully creative and craftful efforts of an interchanging core of artists, artisans and musicians. The Hail To The Thief tribute will be performed [...]
On my way home last night, my phone started going insane with the news that Jeff Hanneman had passed away at the age of 49 from liver failure. I didn’t believe all the text messages that people were sending around, knowing what kind of fan I am of Slayer even my Mom sent me a message and I knew this was real. People die every day. Some too early, some too young, some you know others you don’t. When a legend passes, many people don’t know what it means to you, honestly I didn’t know how much he [...]

In the imaginary heaven that all my favourite bands go to when they break up, I envision a bright, spacious airport style lounge, with a bank of windows facing the eastern sky (or what I imagine would be the eastern sky if this were on our real earth and not in my fake paradise), with lavish contemporary furnishings. Picture oblong tables made of glass and NASA-grade, polished alloys , abutted by chairs built as strong as Andrew Christian underwear models, and equally well endowed. You could order anything your heart desires, and it will be served to you on gilded [...]

We admit it: We’re not generally fans of jazz poetry. The stuff tends to deserve the bad rap it gets. However, the work of Jayne Cortez is a blazing exception. With the help of George Scala , we've put together this memorial post paying tribute to her undersung work - work that melded free jazz, funk, and searing poetry into unique and combustible songs. Cortez was a published poet who received awards from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation; a spoken word artist; [...]

Photos by G. Various Artists. Cape Queer - Dave Mc Dowell I have mostly bad news for you if you like the images you see in this post. Over the weekend of April 20, 2013, Bold Hype Gallery hosted a 2 night only tribute show featuring artists renditions of their favorite Martin Scorsese films/characters/interpretatio ns. The show was really cool. The bad news is that like I said above, the show only ran for 2 days and is now closed. [...]

THE theory behind Medline's People Make the World Go Round LP is a sound one. Who wouldn't want to hear fresh life breathed into classic jazz and soul cuts by the likes of Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard, the sort of tracks which were sampled to death during the golden age of hip hop by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Pete Rock? And the results teeter on the edge of brilliance - when the group grab a groove by the scruff, they really grab it, and sound cooler than a frozen Blue Note record. [...]

Britain's first and only female Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke. Lady Thatcher's children Mark and Carol said their mother, who suffered bouts of ill health in recent years, died peacefully on Monday morning. Here is an interesting pictures of the former Prime Minister, from her youth. Born Margaret Hilda Roberts in 1925, pictured aged 20, with her parents and sister Muriel (left). [...]
