Ty Segall Played Solo In The Bathroom

Ty Segall - "Goodbye Bread"
Ty Segall played alone in the Cake Shop bathroom. There is nothing more to say, really. Oh, besides that this is a brand new, frustratingly good song you wouldn't have heard anywhere else, unless of course you happen to sit outside Ty's apartment window late at night, in a tree, hoping for a glimpse of him in his undies or snippets of new songs. We admit to neither. Feel free to download his electro-acoustified version of "Goodbye Bread" after the bang bong bump. Ty Segall, "Goodbye Bread" [...]

Lissie Played In Our Backyard

Lissie - "Bully"
Once upon a time, the lovely, lovely Lissie came all the way from Ojai, CA to serenade us in our living room . We considered ourselves lucky enough for that experience, but we wanted more. Sooo Lissie came back for round two, and this time, in our backyard. Being the hippie that she is, she took her shoes off, petted our dogs, and started watering the garden (just kidding on that last part). Watch a Lissie-fied cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello," above! Also check out "Bully" and "In Sleep" after the bump, two brainbusters from Lissie's sweet [...]

Dishing with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino

Getting a Manicure with Bethany
It's funny: most of you, given the chance, would spend your interview opportunity with Bethany Cosentino from Best Coast talking about her new album Crazy For You and all of the lovely songs to be found therein. And when we asked her to go get a manicure with us, we fully intended to talk about her jams, too. But then Beth sidetracked us with celeb-filled stories about Snooki and Heidi and burying crystals in the back yard, and by the time the mani was over, the manicurist was mad at us for talking so much, we hadn't [...]

The Acorn Jammed Inside Their Van

The Acorn - "Cobbled From Dust"
Canadian indie rock dynamos The Acorn rolled through New York City earlier this month on what turned out to be a very, very rainy day. We had originally hoped to film them in a public garden but due to the weather, we had to call an audible, the band opting to share some of new songs in their van as opposed to a bank lobby like we had hoped. Check out "Cobbled From Dust," fresh off their fine new LP No Ghost , above, and older jam "Brokered Heart" just after the click.

Frankie Rose and The Outs Sang "You Can Make Me Feel Bad" On a Sidewalk

Frankie Rose & The Outs - "You Can Make Me Feel Bad"
Though Frankie Rose was once a secret weapon to the likes of Crystal Stilts and Girls both Dum Dum and Vivian, respectively, her talents are secret no more . Rose is now fronting The Outs and together they sat on an East Village sidewalk for us to perform "You Can Make Me Feel Bad," a beer and sweat-spackled clip of which you can enjoy above. It's an Arthur Russell cover and the only song on their self-titled debut not penned by Rose. She makes it hers anyway. Frankie Rose and The Outs is awesome [...]

Soundcheck: The Ponys

We missed The Ponys while they were gone. For a little over two years, those wondrous, industrious, ridiculously slept-on garage rock miscreants were off the grid, recharging their batteries and re-discovering their urge to write. But when their new Deathbed+4 EP arrived in our inboxes in March, it was just as well: the Chicago four-piece was definitely back and even better than before. We snuck into their soundcheck at Brooklyn's Union Pool a few weeks back and filmed two choice cuts thereof, Deathbed+4 's bruising "Check The Door", and the pop [...]

Woven Bones: Naked by the Pool

Aaaaaactually, no one got naked. That's just a word some people use to describe rock 'n roll music played both intimately and without e-lectricity. Austin's Woven Bones , as noted back in April, proffer sweet, sweet sludge to the fuzz-hungry masses. Their excellent debut LP, In and Out and Back Again , which came out on HoZac back in May, came coated in just that, but as you can see above, Woven Bones sounds just as good in the nude. Before diving back into the fuzz later that night at Brooklyn's Union Pool, they [...]

Cloud Nothings Take it Outside, Play Acoustic "Hey Cool Kid"

Dylan Baldi, who we've come to know and love as the heart, brains and spectacles behind Cloud Nothings , blew our minds last month. It was just outside a bar in New York's East Village, a baby giggling in the background, that Baldi unfurled an acoustic version of Turning On highlight "Hey Cool Kid". Even without the thick coat of fuzz that his recording style lends, the song was still a stunner. See what we mean up top. DOUBLE NERD BONUS: Download the mpfree version of the song below and then check them out doing [...]

Villagers: Down By The River

We met up with Villagers ' Conor O'Brien last week on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to film what would feel, retrospectively, like a serenade along the banks of the East River. Romance! Skylines! Moving on. O'Brien told us that his goal on tour at the moment is to play "Becoming a Jackal" in every city he visits or just about anywhere he steps foot. The latter seems like a stretch, but it was still fitting that of the two songs he shared with us that afternoon, "Becoming a Jackal" sounded as fresh as it did. Check that out [...]

Soundcheck with First Aid Kit

We met sisters Johanna and Klara of Sweden's First Aid Kit at The Levi's/FADER Fort in Austin, TX during their first visit to the US this past March. We assume they had a nice visit because they came back last week and got a little taste of New York. We accompanied them on their visit to Brooklyn's Bell House to film what we thought would be their soundcheck but turned out to be more of an awesome, private show just for us. Well, it was technically their soundcheck but we'd like to think otherwise, [...]

Chief Takes It Outside

It was a lovely day in New York City when the perma-summer'd Los Angelenos Chief took us outside in the sun to busk their hella appropriate "Summer's Day." Alternately, the dudes did "Night and Day" inside Heather's Bar for The FADER . These guys have a knack for atmosphere, don't you think?

Tokyo Police Club Played Our Living Room, Raided Our Bookshelf

And by play, we mean Dave and Graham stripped down to their acoustic underpants and introduced a few songs from their excellent new LP, Champ. Oh shit, you know what? They played some deep cuts, too! Watch "End of a Spark" above and after the jump, sink your teeth into "Wait Up", "Hands Reversed," and "Tessellate". Everything tastes good! Champ is out June 8 via Mom + Pop . "Wait Up" "Hands Reversed" "Tessellate"

Mumford and Sons Gather Round

Earlier this week, the men of Mumford and Sons came over to play with our dogs and air out some tunes. Above you can check out "Awake My Soul," a rousing feel-good cut from their full-length, Sigh No More . Then, after the jump, NERD BONUS: the dudes share a cover of "Dance Dance Dance", a Neil Young-penned lullaby originally included on Crazy Horse's 1971 debut LP. Sigh No More is out now courtesy of Glassnote .

Keepaway In The Backyard

The men of Brooklyn's Keepaway settled into our backyard last week to play a few songs and scare away the neighbor's dogs. The threesome is releasing their debut EP, Baby Style , on Lefse Records next Wednesday May 18th and to celebrate, they're going to be playing a show at Mercury Lounge that night with the likes of DOM, Rewards, Tony Castles and Prof. DJ Rainstick. That is a hefty, hefty bill. Watch them play "1003 above and "5 Rings" after the jump, then prepare yourself to see them do it bigger and not [...]

Los Campesinos! on a Red Couch!

Los Campesinos! on a Red Couch! Los Campesinos! are without doubt, Wales' favorite set of indie rock maximalists at the moment. And with that in mind, we thought it'd be cool to have them strip things down and see how their songs breathe without so much going on. The results still hit hard, the lines still sting. Watch them plow through two jams from Romance Is Boring , "Straight In At 1013 below and "The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future" after the leap. "Straight In At 1013 [...]

Twin Sister: Live From The Back Of A Van

We're bringing it back! Before washing down some tacos with some spiked Jarritos at the Chocolate Bobka show at Los Hermanos Tortilleria two Saturdays ago, we filmed Eric and Andrea of Twin Sister slow-jamming out in the back of their van parked outside. Good luck trying to find their four-wheeled friend, though: using a strategically-placed sticker, they disguise their van as a "Champion's Tae Kwon Do" transport. Watch them float through "Ginger" (above) and then continue on with "Nectarine" which you can view after the bump. When you're done with that, go check out Pure Ecstasy [...]

Slow-Jamming With Twin Sister In The Back Of Their Van

Before we washed down some tacos with some spiked Jarritos at the Chocolate Bobka show at Los Hermanos Tortilleria this past Saturday with Weed Hounds , Twin Sister and Pure Ecstasy , we filmed Eric and Andrea of Twin Sister slow-jamming out in the back of their van parked outside. Good luck trying to find their four-wheeled friend though. Using a strategically placed sticker, they disguise their van as a "Champion's Tae Kwon Do" transporter. The Backyard: Awesome Color

Awesome Color came by our backyard to play us a little ditty entitled "Mexico," a locale they've yet to visit. What's funny is that our backyard was but one stop on the way to Mexico, where they were set to play some pre-SXSW shows. They were excited. They had never been before. And when we ran into them in Austin, they reported very stoically that the trip was "awesome." They're like longhaired, Zeppelin-loving Zach Condons! Or something.

Eating Pizza With Abe Vigoda

After their soundcheck and before their show with Effi Briest and Cloud Nothings at the Mercury Lounge this past Wednesday, the boys of Abe Vigoda took some time to grab a slice of pizza with us. We talked about their tour with Vampire Weekend and their new album, which they said should be out in September (!). Oh, and The Cranberries were playing in the background so we were all pretty much satisfied!

Soundcheck: Born Ruffians

Soundcheck: Born Ruffians - "Late"
Last Thursday, March 4th, marked the day we snuck into NYU's Kimmel Center to film Born Ruffians ' soundcheck. Today, March 10th, marks the day we reveal the fruits of said sneaking. Actually, we didn't really sneak in. Sorry. We showed our old, faded NYU Card instead! All that said, the Ruffians are actually much softer than their name might suggest: they were nice enough to let us hang out and listen to their "check check 1 2 33 as well as the slightly more soothing "meow meow meow." Watch them play their new single "Sole Brother" above and [...]
