Now we're talking. From Knitting Factory Records : In support of the (RED) Rush to Zero initiative to help end the transmission of HIV from moms to their babies, we are donating proceeds of this wonderful remake of Fela’s "Lady" by tUnE-yArDs, Angélique Kidjo, ?uestlove, and Akua Naru to the charity. We would love your support! Stream the track below and buy the track exclusively from iTunes . The remake preserves the source material's scorching acoustic jazz and acid-blues-arena-rock McCartneyism, while paring off some limbs, offering a second-verse [...]

"Lady" by tUnE-yArDs, Angelique Kidjo, Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson & Akua Naru is not just a mouthful but quite the earful too, in a good way of course. This interesting collaboration pulls together African singer Angelique Kidjo’s and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs’ vocals with rapper Akua Naru and The Roots’ drummer ?uestlove for a blinding re-make of “Lady” by the Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. What’s more - this is just the first track from the forthcoming album (RED) Hot + FELA as part of an AIDS awareness initiative. To support the course you can download Lady from the iTunes link [...]

tUne-yArDs, Angelique Kidjo, ?uestlove, y Akua Naru nos presentan "Lady" un cover a Fela Kuti que hicieron para la Red Hot Organization y (RED) para combatir el VIH. Enjoy.

tUnE-yArDs, 'Questlove', Angelique Kidjo and Akua Naru have remade Fela Kuti's " Lady" to help raise money and awareness for the inaugural (RED) RUSH TO ZERO which is a 10 day campaign (June 1st-June 10th) which aims to eliminate transmission of HIV from Mother's to babies among other efforts to help deliver an AIDS Free Generation by 2015, a critical milestone in the fight against AIDS. For more info about Red Rush visit here . The tUne-yArDs & Questlove led remake of "Lady" is the first single off of ( RED) Hot + FELA, [...]
Keeping the Fela Kuti legacy alive, tUnE-yArDs and Questlove join forces to cover an afro-beat standout, "Lady". This track will be featured on an upcoming charity tribute compilation, Red Hot + FELA , but the single itself can be purchased now . The song also features Akua Naru and Angélique Kidjo, two additional vocalists that add an inspiring element to the mix. With names like this attached, as expected, this cover comes correct in so many ways. Give it a spin and support the cause later on in Fall when the entire compilation is set to drop.

The internet might struggle fitting the title into a tweet without the help of a url shortener, but concerns of that nature are pretty pointless when you consider the dream line-up, and the beautiful outcome. The track in question is a cover of Fela Kuti's 'Lady', which is taken from the Red Hot Organization / (RED) initiative's Fela tribute compilation. Check out the track below, then head over to redrush.com .

I would go see Tune Yards anytime. While I wish - and Ben would agree - that Merrill Garbus would freestyle and stretch out her songs even more live, she really used every opportunity to show off her vocal chops. It continues to blow my mind how two people (she has a bassist) can create such dense, yet at the same time simple, rhythms. She is soulful, yet gangsta at the same time and her voice is unstoppable. I am having difficulty putting into words my adoration. Tune Yards - News ( YSI ) ( [...]

I really love the country—rural towns, fields full of cows, forests that stretch as far as you look—sounds great to me. Every day, after what is almost always an aggravating commute on the subway—‘Attention passengers, we apologize for the inconvenience, there is traffic directly in front of us. We should be moving momentarily. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience’—Northern New England seems to call for me most strongly, beckoning me to its peace and open air. And maybe I will end up out there somewhere, someday. But it is a weekend like this one that forces me [...]

1 C Dirty Projectors 2 Tbsp TV On The Radio 2/3 C Ladysmith Black Mambazo Zest of Regina Spektor Combine ingredients in mixing bowl. Beat furiously, until frothy and rich. Voila: Tune-Yards! Apologies for resorting to the music critics crutch, the “this-band-sounds-like-these -bands” technique. It’s a lame way of describing a sound, and it’s nearly impossible to encapsulate Tune-Yards anyway. But after Tuesday night’s show at The Paradise, recipes [...]

I've posted about her before, but tUnE YArdS continues to captivate. I mean really, just wow. How much beautiful noise can one person make? Merrill Garbus alternates between delightfully ramshackle and beautifully melodic on her debut LP BiRd-BrAiNs. Sounding like a paired down Dirty Projectors on some tracks and a lo-fi Passion Pit on others, tUnE YArdS is a DIY masterpiece of everything that is right with hipster music right now, but without any veneer of pretension or expectation. The album is all about the love of music and rhythm. Oh the rhythm. So massive and primal that it approaches [...]
