Yeeeaaaahhhhya! Two new songs by the yards of tune in the space of 12 hours? I'll have some of that thank you very much. This afternoon the French site Le-Hiboo posted their footage of Merrill and one of her travelling companions playing new song "Doorstep" on the streets of Paris , and at one point she even did a Half-Jimi (where Jimi pulled the guitar up to his face and played with his teeth, Merrill pulled her guitar up to her face and sang into it). Then this evening the Zane Lowe stand-in [...]

Recorded for Le-Hiboo , there's not much more to say about this other than the fact that it's gorgeous and the song is absolutely wonderful, I cannot wait for this album to come out. If you haven't heard anything from the Merrill Garbus-led tUnE yArDs , you can hear the first single from her latest album "Bizness" , or over at @Albums you can listen to her entire debut album "BiRd-BrAiNs" (I recommend that you do both). Merrill Garbus has had a steady following beginning even before her album Bird-Brains , was released in 2009 through 4AD. Merrill’s project, tUnE-yArDs, began with her recording beats, melodies and lyrics on a hand-held recorder and then laying them herself with mixing software. She released her songs first through Marriage Records, and then went back and re-released them as an album through 4AD. The EPs Bird-Droppings and Real Live Flesh followed within the next year. Now over a year later, Garbus has released a song [...]
When I heard the song "Fiya" for the first time, I was obsessed with how beautiful and raw it was. Such power and genuine feeling wrapped in such wonderful music. Then, in the summer of 2010, Matt and I got to ask Merrill Garbus, the immensely creative woman behind Tune-Yards, what the song actually meant. [...]

Tune-Yards (often stylized as tUnE-yArDs) may sound like a full band but the truth is that it's merely all the intricate workings of one talented woman named Merrill Garbus. Long before one-woman looping orchestras such as Glasser and Oh Land came along (but after the force of nature known as Theresa Andersson ), Garbus was already extensively touring and performing the material from her 2009 album "BiRd BrAiNs." Her sound has been described as "a patchwork of sound snippets" which incorporates elements of folk, R&B and experimental beats by way of snare drum, microphone stand, ukulele, vocals, and [...]
This song right here is downright awesome. While it feels like an eternity since tUnE-yArDs dropped some new material (I believe February of 2010), we finally get our hands on some material from the upcoming album, W H O K I L L . The album will be available April 19 via 4AD , but "Bizness" and its incredibly infectious vocals and rhythms are sure to hold us over until that date. Seriously, I can't wait for this bomb of an album to drop. Stream "Bizness" or download after the skip. [...]

This one seemed to slip under everyone's radar. It wasn't announced, there was no hype or build up or suspense, and the only way I found out about it was standing in line at the local crack house grocery store, I became impatient at one customer's inability to scan a fucking banana, so I checked Twitter to while away the time. There sat a tweet by none other than the gatekeeper of all things new music, Zane Lowe saying nothing more than "Tune yards now on R13 . Forgetting about it I came [...]
by lonnie Hailing from Oakland, Beep! is apparently a side project of tUnE-yArDs bassist Nate Brenner. Heavy with layered piano, bass, and upbeat percussion you can hear some correlation to the tUne-yArds sound, confirmed when Merrill Garbus' voice makes a cameo at the 5-minute mark of "Wolf Pantolones." The single is an interesting and melodic battle of noise that's well worth a listen. Beep!'s album City of the Future is set for release on December 7th. You can peruse some more info [...]
Merrill Garbus, aka Tune-Yards, gave new meaning to the term “Do It Yourself” with her wonderful 2009 album Bird Brains. Originally released on cassette, the album was pieced together from audio captured on a digital voice recorder. The album was ... Continue reading

The crowd at the Dirty Projectors ' set at Chicago's Bottom Lounge Friday night was anything but calm. Perhaps it was the buzz of a new weekend, or that opener and one-woman band Tune-Yards wound up the crowd to show off her voice-manipulating antics. Dave Longstreth took to the stage to applause and drunken shouts, starting things off with a solo version of an older song, "Like Fake Blood In Crisp October." Singing over cries of "D-Long" and the ever popular "Woooo!" from some inebriated folks in the crowd, Longstreth [...]

Merrill Garbus is the voice and creative "bird brain" behind the moniker tUnE-YaRdS . Singing like a Siren, her voice surges and swells, as she weaves through the lyrics and melodies. From singing with a folksy wobbling in her voice to holding more steady, serene notes, Garbus has a talented vocal range she's not afraid to experiment with. Completely organic, Garbus made the record Bird Brain using a hand-held voice recorder, ukulele, and drums. She incorporates so many aural elements into her songs, from kids speaking in the background, to objects clattering, [...]
This really bends the definition of "video," because it's a 24-minute, five-song set by the talented multi-instrumentalist and singer Merrill Garbus, with all the onstage fireworks of Imogen Heap but a far funkier and often darker sound. This is the second installment of 4AD's new online video series . The first stars Deerhunter. NB: You can only watch one song hosted here; watch the rest on the 4AD site.

While the tracks on Bird Brains are rough and unpolished, the album's simplicity, and diversity ( Stereogum has stated the album jumps "between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk") is charming. Merrill Garbus , aka tUnE-YaRdS , recorded Bird-Brains on a digital voice recorder and assembled it using shareware mixing software. One of the highlights on the album is "Sunlight." The track features loud drumming and faded backing instruments; tiny, cartoon voices connect the [...]
Over to a backyard shortly before Merrill Grabus launched the album. As a warm up, she worked through Top Chef: [Part of the Tune-Yards weekend ]
Or, to be precise, tUnE-YaRdS. They - or, rather, she, Merrill Garbus - turned up earlier this week on Marc Riley's 6Music programme to turn in a set of messed-up slickness. And to paint her face. It was radio, but a trademark is a trademark. Before we get going with some video action, 4AD are offering the track Sunlight as a free download, which is a good starting point. The Tune-yards MySpace "sounds like" box says: Your mom when she gets really mad but instead of whoopin' yo' ass she starts making [...]
Earlier this year tUne-YaRds (Merrill Garbus) sent me an mp3 of one of her lo-fi experimental folk compositions, recorded on a hand-held digital voice recorder and edited using free mixing software, but I never took to it enough to post - until I saw this beautifully shot live performance, which animates the material in a way that does it justice. In the months since that email, her album BiRd-BrAiNs (which took two years to put together) is no longer offered through a pay-what-you-feel option but can be bought through Marriage records. [...]
