Merrill Garbus's unhinged yawp turns out to be just about ideal for Afrobeat. The Red Hot Organization and the (RED) initiative are currently teaming up to release (RED) Hot + Fela , a new fundraising Fela Kuti tribute compilation. And on the comp's version of "Lady," tUnE-yArDs teams up with Roots drummer/bandleader ?uestlove, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo, and Ghanaian-American rapper Akua Naru. And other than the pretty-unnecessary Naru verse, it does a nice job paying homage to Fela's frantic, drawn-out rhythmic intensity. Listen below. Read More...

Keeping the Fela Kuti legacy alive, tUnE-yArDs and Questlove join forces to cover an afro-beat standout, "Lady". This track will be featured on an upcoming charity tribute compilation,  Red Hot + FELA , but the single itself can be purchased now . The song also features Akua Naru and Angélique Kidjo, two additional vocalists that add an inspiring element to the mix. With names like this attached, as expected, this cover comes correct in so many ways. Give it a spin and support the cause later on in Fall when the entire compilation is set to drop.

tUnE-yArDs  and The Roots'  ?uestlove  have joined forces to cover Fela Kuti's "Lady" for an upcoming tribute compilation called Red Hot + FELA . The track, which also features rapper Akua Naru and African singer Angélique Kidjo, is now available to purchase through iTunes . The compilation is the first collaboration between AIDS charities (RED) and Red Hot Organization (though Red Hot has a  long history of such efforts ). Merrill Garbus made her television debut on, where else but, Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night with some help from Questlove on drums and Dark Thought adding in some hip hop vibes about halfway through. With how complex and all over the place the vocals are on this track is't nice to see that Merrill can replicate them live. tUnE-yArDs - "Bizness"

You could see this tUnE-yArDs performance on Fallon with Questlove and Black Thought coming from a year-and-a-half away, when @Questo tweeted "omfg!!!!! watching tune-yards on stage now. this is some of the GREATEST ish I've seen in a minute!!!!" from the Bowery show the bands played together in November of '09. Last night, Merrill Garbus did w h o k i l l 's propulsive funk show-stopper "Gangsta" with some added backbeat muscle compliments of the Roots' bandleader and style compliments of the Roots' rapper. Last week, ?uestlove took to Twitter to announce the initial line-up for the third annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. Vampire Weekend, Mayer Hawthorne, and The Very Best will join The Roots, along with Clipse, Tune-Yards, Das Racist, DJ Jazzy Jeff, MM Jam Boys, and Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew.
