Reader Melody Lau sends in this clip of Merrill Garbus doing her thing over eight minutes on a new song during a sold-out performance at the Ukraine Center for last week's POP Montreal festival. Here, specifically, her thing is that tUnE-yArDs hybrid of loop/patch vocal crochet, ukulele scraping, with a healthy dollop of brass + bass, except the bass sounds more riff-like, as if "Powa"'s half-time funk took an attitude adjustment from the raunchy swing of Janes's "Coming Down The Mountain," or something. Definitely one of the "it" shows at Pop Montreal on September 23, 2011. A sold out show with tUnE-yArDs , Pat Jordache and Touchy Mob at the Ukrainian Federation. Very anticipated show because it was tUnE-yArDs. This was the only time this year that I went to a show at Ukrainian Federation and there is something special about that venue. Here is tUnE-yArDs with a new video for "Gangsta" from the great W H O K I L L album.

Before watching this, I should probably mention  tUne-yArDs are an acquired taste. "Gangsta" is already a chaotic song with random "bang bang" outbursts and swirling saxophones, the video is just as odd. It features kooky black and white clips of the band and their eccentric fans. Finally we get a video from Merrill Garbus AKA tUnE-yArDs for her w h o k i l l stand-out track, "Gangsta'. Not only do we get the video but it's directed by the lady herself and it's an interesting watch albeit a low budget and DIY filled vibe, it's nice to see she's not taking herself too seriously and still enjoying life. A personal favourite track finally has a video, just not the best video. Give it a watch at the top and let us know what you think of the vid too.

I'm unable to fully get behind every track on tUnE-yArDs' sophomore album W H O K I L L but there are definitely some gems on there. "Gangsta" just happens to be one of them and now it has a proper music video to go along with it. The video is really just what you'd expect from Merrill Garbus, random and senseless black & white clips. tUnE-yArDs - "Gangsta"

By the time the boisterous "Gangsta" hits, you instantly know w h o k i l l   is one of the best albums of the year. Perhaps the most downright fun track on the new tUnE-yArDs record, it fittingly gets a video of nothing but black and white mischief. Here's one Merril Garbis directed herself. tUnE-yArDs- "Gangsta"

Merrill Garbus thinks of herself in " magenta-y " terms, which is no surprise if you've seen what she did with " Bizness " or the w h o k i l l cover or anything else about tUnE-yArDs ever. That said: this is the least colorful thing tUnE-yArDs has produced in awhile. Here, w h o k i l l 's hood-cautionary loop-funk cut "Gangsta" gets a video with the Garbus palette scaled back to a stark black/white/grey palette. Here's the second video from tUnE-yArDs ' w h o k i l l album (fuck, that's a struggle to type). Her first video " Bizness " was awesome, and this one is just as interesting, although it's a little more disjointed, both musically and visually. Merrill Garbus directed this tour-hijinks-filled new video for tUnE-yArDs ’ "Gangsta." A reminder that the band arrives back in SF for a performance at the Regency Ballroom on November 23rd. Myself and Aoife introduced two friends of ours to tUnE-yArDs' last night by playing them 'Bizness' and 'Party Can' . Watching their jaws drop was a delight. There's no greater joy than sharing some good music and Merrill Garbus is a pretty exceptional musician. The video is a black and white tour made affair but sure, any excuse for a birra tUnE-yArDs.
