From beat one, the face painted, feather clad Merrill Garbus co-opted the crowd at New York’s Pier 54 last night, forming a sort of afro-urban tribe moving wildly below a fat full moon. Sticking largely to tracks from her March release w h o k i l l , Garbus made it apparent that she’s far more than one of the many tourists dabbling in the current afro-pop trend. If you only read her bio, it’d be easy to mistake tUnE-yArDs for another quick burning Pitchfork [...]

At the beginning of April, we brought you our favourite albums of the first three months of the year . Terrifyingly, we're now halfway through 2011 and it's time to reveal the records we've most enjoyed in the year's second quarter. These are picked by our editors and it's a bit of a mixed bunch - there's one or two albums here you won't have been able to avoid, many that we've already reviewed, and a few that have slipped under the radar. Here's 11 for the second quarter of '11. [...]

Photo via Tuneyards' Facebook Page As always I try to bring you all some of the best new groups, and artists out there. Well, get ready to get your mind blown by Tuneyards , an experimental combination of sounds, that create a wall of completely beautiful cacophony. Tribal-esque vocals (that have a hint of Jamiroquai soul), percussive hits exploding from all directions and an overall bombastic sound that just grows and grows, Tuneyards is instantly appealing. Created by New England native, Merill Garbus, Tuneyards' formula, especially live, is completely innovative. Garbus creates drum [...]

Undoubtedly, the focal point in the music of Tune-Yards is Merril Garbus' voice. Intense and disciplined, it channels an immense depth of emotion and state of being, expressed across a staggering hybrid of reggae, soul, jazz and folk influences. But it's not the only thing worth listening to on Tune-Yards' recent second album. Without sounding congested, w h o k i l l delights in musical complexity and rewards handsomely for each closer listen. On the standout slow-jam "Powa", Garbus' self-assured vocals prove unshakable, whether she's cooing softly at the start, growling in increasing tension with [...]

Bizness mp3 tUnE – yArDs is the musical project of one Merrill Garbus ; songwriter, vocalist, percussionist, and ukulele player extraordinaire. For muso journalists, the stylization of tUne – yArDs is a caps-lock bashing nightmare. But for questioning muso fans, the allure is almost too much. Why is it like that we cry? It’s a statement of intent that Merrill don’t conform to no one not never, no. Although her track ‘Fiya’ was in fact featured on a 2010 commercial for the Blackberry Torch… According [...]
Tune-Yards play Whelans in Dublin on Friday and tickets are all sold out. Apparently, they stole the weekend at Primavera in Spain the other weekend and will undoubtedly be amazing on Friday. They recorded four tracks for KEXP over in the US a couple of weeks back. 'Gangsta' up there [Read more]

tUnE-yArDs has been growing on me over the last few weeks. I think that I finally came to grips with Merrill Garbus’s sound when I was able to define it. tUnE-yArDs is basically what happens when you mix The Dirty Projectors with Micachu and The Shapes and then run it all through a blender on the puree setting. Garbus stopped by Yours Truly to answer a few questions and play a live version of "You Yes You" which appears on the band's genre bending album w h o k i l l . If you [...]
A live session of tUnE-yArDs performing "You Yes You," which was shot by the good people at yourstru.ly . Before the song, frontwoman Merrill Garbus even goes into detail on the origins of the title w h o k i l l , and even talks about the album's confrontational tendencies. Watch a review of w h o k i l l here . The album is out now on 4AD . Oh yeah, gotta say this: Holy crap she can rock a uke!

I live in a podunk town in backwater region of western Massachusetts - I don't know why any bands worth their salt would want to tour here. Somehow, Interpol and Sphongle showed up last year along with Tegan and Sara. There being appeal to perform here is a counterintuitive fact, and only one of many contributing to the state of affairs in the Pioneer Valley. Against this dull truth, it turns out the key member of the breakout indie act tUnE-YarDs, Merrill Garbus, is from these parts. And she threw us poor soul a helluva show last Sunday, with her [...]
I love this song for how alternative and relaxed it is. I love tUnE-yArDs in general and their album, w h o k i l l, is a must download. The sound is all over the place, giving it such a unique vibe. Earlier this week I saw the music video, which is

It's not often I run across a new artist who boggles my mind, knocks my socks off, and makes me groove out all at the same time. This week I found one. Tune-Yards (or more officially tUnE-yArDs) is the brainchild of one Merrill Garbus. In fact, it's pretty much a one-woman show, with some additional help for studio work and live shows. I missed the first Tune-Yards album, Bird-Brains , back in 2009 so the new album W H O K I L L [...]

Well, the new tUnE-yArDs album rules. A week after it's release and I'm still blaring this record on the daily. On her new album w h o k i l l , Merrill Garbus spends 40 minutes doing what I like best: looping shit. Throughout the album, layers upon layers of noises are piled up to create endless soundscapes, at first seemingly random and rather abrasive. However, these collections of sounds twist and turn into some sort of melody that, God knows how, can for real get stuck in your head. I keep finding myself trying to hum [...]
Talk about one of the most unique musical acts out there, that would be tUnE-yArDs. When I first heard "Bizness" I was skeptical but couldn't stay away from the track. Then I heard "Gangsta" and I felt this musical project/group was for real with gen

With 8 months remaining in 2011, it would be more than premature to call tUnE-yArDs' second release a shoo-in for album of the year. That said, it is equally difficult not to. Merrill Garbus packs endless ideas into 10 songs. w h o k i l l takes on so much all at once that in most circumstances such a record would end in failure, but for this Oakland resident, this attempt does not just work, it exceeds all expectations. With her debut album BiRd-BrAiNs , Garbus recorded everything on her own, but her sophomore release prospers [...]

Out Now on 4AD When an album is as kinetic and infectious as ‘w h o k i l l’ , it’s a little intimidating. Sure, opener’s ‘My Country’ is more instant than anything on ‘Bird-Brains ’ by some stretch, but Merrill Garbus encompasses a style of freedom, lack of caution and excitement that many other artists don’t come close to. In actual fact, you, yourself as a person, is unlikely to live your days in the kind of frantic haze [...]

When Tune-Yards’ 2009 LP, Bird Brains , was released in 2009 it was met with a mixed response. It was in no way a bad album, it just didn’t seem to fully realise the ambitious potential of the sound. The DIY nature of recording seemed to be at least partly responsible for this, with the lo-fi recordings inhibiting the vibrant and exciting sound that so desperately wanted reveal itself. Who Kill , Merrill Garbus’ second album, thankfully develops those raw ideas found in Bird Brains, leaving us with a raucous, manic, eccentric mix [...]
I have mixed feelings about a lot of the musical genres that fall under the far-flung retro/derivative/throwback/cla ssic style banner. In some cases, I really like the original stuff (old school metal, golden era hip-hop) so when I hear a new artist aping that style, it’s pretty easy for me to like them too - especially if they do a good job of it. On the other hand, there are a lot of genres that I never really liked the first time around - like disco or psych rock - so it’s hard for me to get excited about [...]
