Such is the ludicrously concerted throwback aesthetic to overpower every last She & Him album that it seems disorienting to talk of pressing play, as opposed to allowing for the dust-enshrouded needle to wheedle its stilted way toward black wax but I'm pressing play. And, shameful though it may be to say so, I'm thoroughly enjoying what I'm hearing. For She & Him are something of a guilty pleasure. They perhaps shouldn't be, such are their indie credentials, but that's exactly what they are. There's no two ways about it; no cause for discussion: [...]

So what does a band do when it goes into semi-retirement? Do they spend their days playing Canasta and Cribbage in a retirement home somewhere sunny? Take ship cruises in the Caribbean? Buy a Winnebago and hit the road in style? If you are the finest purveyors of twee-cuddle-core-hard-core-roc k-n-roll then you make a new record and have DJ battles with other bands. When Tullycraft went on hiatus back in 2009 they said they would no longer be playing live, but left the door open for more records. Four years later they have [...]
The Pastels - Check My Heart (Official Video)

Is pop music, by definition, the music that plays on the radio and is literally popular; is it music that is inherently not subversive and non-alienating; or is it an all-encompassing genre meant to represent music that is meant to be consumed as a product? An idea that would put Ke$ha and Avey Tare under the same umbrella of music. On “I Keep Falling In Love With You Again,” the first song off of their new album The Great Perhaps , The Boy Least Likely To remind that pop music is also a literal identifiable sound: pop music is music that cuts through [...]

If you're a Los Campesinos ! fan, I've got some pretty great news for your Friday. The UK-based indie pop band is releasing their very first live album, which will be available for digital download on May 4th. A Good Night For A Fistfight was recorded last December at Islington Assembly Hall in London, where the band played a 21-song set spanning all of their albums. The show was particularly noteworthy because it marked the last show with band member Ellen Campesinos!, as well as the appearance of Aleks Campesinos! playing her first [...]

Glasgow's classy, catchy, and quaint Camera Obscura has a new album on the way titled Desire Lines , which is looking at a release on 4AD, and "Do It Again" is the first track to drop from it. It's an incredibly sweet and fancy-free track that features an odd synth and an uplifting chorus. Enjoy!
Swedish punks Makthaverskan go a wee bit jangle pop on this sophomore album of theirs, and the results are pretty catchy. WATCH THE REVIEW
Makthaverskan II by makthaverskan Sweden's Makthaverskan embraces the tenants of jangle and noise pop on this new collection of tracks, II . While the band's punk roots still remain on many tracks here-especially "Distance"-they show up in subtler ways: light distortion, fast tempos, and frontwoman Maja Milner's sharp, abrasive voice. The songs are as catchy as they are energetic. Don't expect nothing but sugar on this thing, though. Milner's lyrics put some pretty dirty laundry on display. Just try not to wince at the bitterness that comes through on a track like [...]
Collecting a few new (to me) tracks today. I think this one by Still Corners is my favorite of the batch. Taken from Strange Pleasures , out on Sub Pop May 6 (UK and Europe) and May 7 (North America). This new Beach Day track is sunny, unlike the new " Demons " track from The National. That one just had me frowning. I want to like The National, but I think I've had my fill of depressing music. This is just what I needed!

On their first full-length collaborative effort, Adam Green & Binki Shapiro appear to have more in common then one would assume; however, that doesn't always guarantee chemistry. WATCH THE REVIEW
With just over four weeks until this year's London Popfest, the line-up has almost been finalised. Taking place across three venues in London, this year's event boasts appearances from Cambridge based Hong Kong in the 60s, The Orchids from Glasgow and Burning Hearts all the way from Finland. Ok, I'm not going to lie, when I first heard about London Popfest I wasn't instantly sold. Staccato electric guitar and vocals lost in reverb all seemed pretty 2005. So I pulled together a Spotify playlist of some of the artists at this year's festival. Two [...]

CLASSICS WEEK: My Bloody Valentine's Loveless . Even 20 years after its initial release, this album still thrives as one of the strangest auditory experiences in rock and pop. Kevin Shields and company truly came together with a sonically surreal album here that still has modern experimentalists intrigued. WATCH THE REVIEW

Omg! Omg! Omg! Tullycraft has reunited our disenchanted hearts with the news that they will be releasing their first new recordings since 2007's Every Scene Needs a Center ! And, truthfully, it couldn't come at a better time. The world needs Tullycraft to remind us that music is supposed to be fun and that straightforward, clever, well written songs are always, always welcome. And Sean Tollefson and his wonderful collaborators Jenny Mears, Corianton Hale, Chris Munford, and Jeff Fell are masters at the craft of the three minute pop song. [...]

The Spook School have just released their debut 5-track cassette EP I Don’t Know, You Don’t Know, We Don’t Know The Spook School , and we’re enjoying the hell out of it here at HCM headquarters. Sure, the songs are as twee and cutesy as can be, but the garage rock aesthetic is used genuinely, making everything way more authentic. We are truly believe that this young and innocent future couple, that are the subject of many of the tracks, truly are exhausting themselves and finding the perfect words to say. Did I mention HANDCLAPS all over opening track “I Don’t Know”, so [...]
