First off apologies for the lack of a Friday Freebies post yesterday, a combination of going to the Twilight Sad and a teething baby meant that I just plain old ran out of time. Fear not though as it will be a double roll over next week. Anyway, that's enough apologies for one week, onwards and upwards with this weeks We've Got It Covered post which focuses on some of the Scottish artists that have been selected to play at this years South By South West (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. I appreciate that a lot of you will already [...]

The Twilight Sad : Another Bed Ούτε στη Σκωτία την ίδια δε θα βρεις τόσο βαρειά προφορά. Αλλά πάλι μήπως τραγουδάνε όλοι όπως ο James Graham ; Οι πουρίστες που διυλίζουν τον κώνωπα θα μετρήσουν πόσο NIN και πόσο Radiohead είναι η εισαγωγή του "Sick", θα πουν ότι το No One Can Ever Know δεν είναι Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters , ότι είναι πιό εμβατηριακό κλπ. Εμένα πάντως (αν και δεν μου άρεσε το Forget the Night Ahead [...]
The Twilight Sad haben spätestens nach ihren Konzerten Ende des letzten Jahres im Rahmen der Fat Cat Tour mit den Labelkollegen We Were Promised Jetpacks und Mazes auch in Deutschland bei einem breiteren Publikum Interesse geweckt. Nach den ersten beiden Alben 'Fourteen Autumns und Fifteen Winters' (2007) und 'Forget the Night Ahead' aus dem Jahr [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Scottish brooders turn the shoegaze down, invest in some new technology, and make a record that pushes the limits of their band's well-honed sound. It's good to try new things. Right? We're all onboard with that advice. Order the octopus. Go to the matinee at that Bollywood theater. Explore a new neighborhood on your bike. That sort of stuff. And, if you're a band, try some new instruments in the studio. Usually these will be synths and drum machines. Check them out. Who knows what could happen? Actually, what usually happens is a critic will end up reviewing your...

Frank Yang It hasn't escaped my notice that my live show schedule so far in 2012 has been pretty lean, and what there has been has been more on the sedate side. Which is fine - I dig the low key stuff and getting home well before midnight - but sometimes you get a fever for something bigger, louder and more rawk... and on those occasions, such as Tuesday night, the perfect prescription is The Kills . The Amer-English duo were on the road for a second North American jaunt in support of last [...]

Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral comes out today, and if you couldn't tell how excited we were to feature an exclusive album preview this past week and you somehow thrilled we were to host the Mark Lanegan Band live this morning from the Cutting Room Studios in NYC, go back and listen to the performance again later today on our Live Performances Archive and you can practically hear John Richards' head explode when Mark calls him "bro." Awesome. Though Mark Lanegan lives in sunnier southern climes now, he's definitely a legend of Northwest [...]

The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know MMM 1/2 The Twilight Sad are one of the few bands capable of genuinely turning darkness into underappreciated beauty; sorrow sounds seductive and rather enrapturing in their hands. Over the course of two albums and a handful of EPs, the Scottish band have made a name for themselves with their brooding yet rousing songs rooted deeply in shoegaze's vast, enveloping character. On their third full-length album, No One Can Ever Know [...]

The Twilight Sad were one of the first under the radar Scottish bands I ever really 'discovered' for myself, although oddly enough it was actually American blogs where I first started to hear about them, despite their being from just down the road, relatively speaking. This is their third album, and despite a subtle shift evident in their second, represents by far the most decisive move yet away from the walls of squalling guitars which played such a part in the making of their name. They have adjusted from a devastating combination of heart-rending vocal and [...]

Facebook After writing up some bands lately whose names have either undersold or misrepresented the music they present, it's rather refreshing to have an artist whose public identity promises exactly what they have to offer. And that artist is Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny . A grandiose name, to be sure, and one that's matched by the title of their just-released debut album Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose . There's no way that labels like those could herald anything less than grandiose [...]
One thing that's great about Scottish shoegaze band The Twilight Sad is that its opening tracks kick ass: The drums of "Reflection of the Television", off 2009's Forget the Night Ahead, starts its slow dirge; the aching beauty of the acoustic/electric slide guitar sounds on "Cold Days from the Birdhouse" from the band's 2007 debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters , make you melt right away; and on its latest, No One Can Ever Know , lead track "Alphabet" sounds like a possessed monosynth booting up. No doubt, The Twilight Sad knows how to [...]

One of the most fruitful weeks yet this year for new music releases. We're proud to feature Philadelphia's own Dr. Dog whose Be The Void is out today. We're quite excited about this album, not only because they're from Philly, but their last effort Shame Shame featured some great tracks such as "Jackie Wants A Black Eye" and "Where'd All The Time Go". Lots more to get to this week including The Twilight Sad with their creepy-titled No One Can [...]

Ah, Tartan Shortbread, that most wonderful of sardonic Scottish put-downs. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is the offhand dismissal used to describe the sort of mawkish, clichéd tourist tat which masquerades as Scottish heritage and culture for those with woefully little imagination. Alternatively, I suppose you could say that Tartan Shortbread is a blanket term for Scottish heritage as a sort of motorway service station take on national identity. Anyhow, given I work very much at the coalface of the DIY music world in Scotland, I find that I have been oddly unsupportive of [...]

"Sinister in its darkness but generous in its quality..." The Twilight Sad | No One Can Ever Know The Twilight Sad sure do signpost the direction in which they wish to be traveling. First of all there is the name, which perfectly captures both a melancholic artistry and the feeling that they probably decided upon it while listening to the Scottish rain hammer against their window pane. No One Can Ever Know , which follows 2009's Forget the Night Ahead cites industrial heavyweights Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails among its [...]
