For whatever reason - we've gone about and recorded another podcast . This is #003 in a collector series . During this episode of music and babbling nonsense we feature some of our current favorite tracks. So – here it is. Download. Stream. Share. We apologize ahead of time. Track list: 1) Ready To Go - Guards 2) Oh, Hiding Out - Small Houses 3) [...]

Day three folks. Day three. Pictured above, the CD disc face from the KEEP Recordings CD (CDR?) - understated, clean, even sparse. A signal of the mindset of the album, the sparseness of the recordings? I like to think that and not that it was a cost effective option of getting the discs made...come on, give me that at least! This sparseness in the recordings is probably what defined the early Josh Tillman albums, whether you like to call it that or not, it still did. It is what drew me in and captivated. I could [...]

We figured with the pending continuing winter cold/snow here in Michigan that ‘Front Porch Fridays’ didn’t seem very cozy. So ‘Fireplace Fridays’ it is. We still plan on featuring the same type of music to compliment those moments of lying lazily by the fire or on your couch as you peer out @ the falling snow. It gives us great pleasure to feature Tyler Butler of Calgary Alberta Canada - where it knows how to get cold. We're ashamed [...]

Our first ‘Bedroom Session’ of the new year features Tyler Butler… and it is kind of a church session. Listen / download it for free .

Tyler Butler - St Paul's Church in Fish Creek Today's guest post is from Edmonton Folkie Tyler Butler. He provides us not with a "best of" or "must-haves" of the 2012 year in music but albums that affected him and he found an important part of his 2012 experience. What were they? See below! ~~~ These five records are far from an exclusive best-of-the-year list, and I could never put them in order. But each album stuck with me, influenced and affected me. Enjoy: [...]
The album version of this Tyler Butler track will be featured on Episode 7 of ‘Mix Tape Radio on Folk Radio UK’ , which airs later today (8pm UK time). (video done by Southern Souls )

Our friend Tyler Butler is releasing his new 4 song EP entitled Violence tomorrow night in Edmonton at the release show in the historic Rutherford House. It isn't to be missed, so hit up the Facebook event ( here ) for more info and I do believe there will be a few tickets at the door just in case (but only a few, so be there early). The EP is a touch softer than the title may lead you to believe but may sway slightly to the folk-country from some [...]

Tomorrow night (June 14th, 2012) in Edmonton finds a spectacular line up just up the road from Slowcoustic HQ here in Calgary. The triple threat show is sponsored by CKUA and presented from the good folks at OLD UGLY Recording Co. So let's be clear here, despite not being able to make it to this mid-week show, if you are able to make it out, I can assure you it will be fantastic. Opening the show is hometown troubadour Tyler Butler who's album Winter King was a 'favourite of 20112 and we liked it soo much [...]
Herohill delivers another fantastic compilation, with 'The Bard of Montreal,' their tribute to Leonard Cohen.

Just over a week ago we over at Yer Bird Records met up with Brock Mitchell for a video session for Tyler Butler. Tyler made it down for the day as he had a house show that night and we juuuuuust squeaked in this video in time to get back to the venue for the house show only 2-3 minutes late. If it wasn't for the quick and talented Mitchell, we could have had a pretty surly crowd at the show! That might be an exaggeration but overall it was a bit cold, a bit rushed but the results shown [...]
Tyler Butler’s great album Winter King is getting a re-release over on the also great Yer Bird Records . It was already a really great album , but it has been made even better. For starters, the original album cover had Tyler wearing antlers, but the new album has actual elk on it (although, they don’t seem to have antlers… perhaps a metaphor there, but probably not). But that’s not all (rather than re-wording info, here is the description from Sandy at Slowcoustic … who is also Sandy from Yer Bird): [...]

Today sees the re-release of our good friend Tyler Butler's album Winter King over on our label, Yer Bird Records! This album has seen its fair share of coverage over here, so I just want to say that we still love it and we are happy to bring it back to you all over again. This 2012 re-release includes some re-mastering of the first 4 songs (also called the 'House Painter EP' to those in the know) and includes a new recording of 'Feral Horse' along with the previously unheard title track, Winter King. So it is now [...]

Tyler Butler joins the crew over at our label Yer Bird Records and re-releases 'Winter King' on March 20th, 2012! If you are reading Slowcoustic on a regular basis, you already know of Mr. Butler from Edmonton and we are very excited to bring one of our favourite albums of last year home to us over at Yer Bird Records. We are re-releasing it with a couple of 'bonus tracks' as well! The bonus tracks are a newly recorded version of "Feral Horse" from his previous EP Feral Horse plus the previously unheard title track 'Winter King'. All [...]

Today sees the annual pilgrimage to that place where we throw caution to the wind and provide you dear readers with our opinions on what is our most bestest albums ever recorded in the current year. Yes, the best by way of favourite releases that deserve recognition for their amazing talents in the art of folk and folk inspired music. Some may not be your cup of tea and some are going to feel right at home - overall, I think they are all frickin' fantastic albums and I whole heartily recommend every last one of them. The [...]
Thought I would post on my top LAST.FM artists of the last 6 months for your perusal and judgment. While not completely accurate of my listening as there is still listen to music non-stop during my commute to work (2 hours daily) and my sad basement day job that don't get scrobbled to Last.fm for these charts. Overall I feel they reflect what I am listening to, but some artists may be up or down a spot or two. Let's get on with it! ~Slowcoustic's Last 6 months of top artists playlist~ [...]

*please disregard the fact that I only have 4 of the 5 listed below - $15.00 shipping from the USA t0 Canada isn't right. Sure a favourite releases list of 2011 thus far - I can do that. Also, as it is the weekend I am going to post 5 today and 5 tomorrow because honestly it gets me a post material for tomorrow automatically!! This first grouping is not necessarily lesser than tomorrow's grouping, but for lack of scientific research these could be considered #10 through #6 favourite releases of 2011 thus far. [...]

This place is a prison . Backed by Jimmy Tamborello's fragmented, distorted programming, this song is a chance for Ben Gibbard to dissect the scene in which he (like so many of us) is trapped. Caught in an endless loop of drinking and falsified moments that only gain significance in the embellished retelling, Gibbard needs an escape. For young Alberta song writer Tyler Butler , his city and it's inhospitable Winter climate, shackle him in much the same way. Sonically, the two acts couldn't be more different - Butler barely raises his voice [...]

Tyler Butler is creating slowed down folky soundscapes from the city of champions, Edmonton. Sometimes I find myself scouring the US and Europe for music and end up finding some of the best stuff right in my own backyard. Figures. Tyler has recently released his latest album 'Winter King' on OLD UGLY Recording Co and while I am just getting into this stripped down acoustic album, it is truly impressing. Winter King was created to infuse 'Winter Mythology' with 'Complex & Controlled Poetry'. What I take from this is that the album brings stories melded into [...]
