Where oh where would generations of bedroom sulkers with big dreams be without The Smiths? When you're in a mood (you know the type), who better to turn to? The English band is venerated as the most influential alternative rock band of the 1980s alternative rock scene, and remains popular with a devoted cult-like following all over the world. Uncensored Discussions host Courtney E. Smith talks with Josh Venable , a DJ at L.A. rock radio station 98.7 KYSR in this two-part conversation on The Smiths.
Author Nick Hornby wasn't lying when he said "The Replacements were superheroes : They rescued a whole planet from '80s music." That's how many felt after the band launched in 1979 and progressed through the next decade, often tripping over themselves despite critical acclaim. Drugs, disorderly conduct, crappy gigs, major label success-they've been through it all. Josh Naes of Aquarium Drunkard sits down with host Courtney Smith in this Uncensored Discussion to give you the scoop on the influential band that for many saved the decade.

Like everything else, the techies have a head start at SXSW. Today marks the beginning of SXSW Interactive , where companies gather to hash out emerging technology, websites, video games and cool new start-ups. (And we do mean hash-why, there are session-specific hashtags , of course). We're testing out the ways to engage more with video technology alongside other proud geeks who are also thinking ahead. There are keynote speeches, panel discussions, a trade show, an arcade to kill some serious time in and the annual Webby Awards (we're a former finalist!). [...]
We're opinionated. Uncensored Interview talks to plenty of musicians with something to say and who deserve to be heard. To further that goal, we've teamed up with Big Think to bring our viewers ideas that matter from people who matter. From poverty in Jamaica and music therapy in the Bronx to health awareness in Haiti and warm clothes in cold Canada, it's clear that musicians are actively using their public platforms to further social causes in the name of empowering lives. Take a peek at artists like Moby, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Margaret Cho, Metric [...]
Fresh off the heels of our Northside Festival showcase last week, Uncensored Interview is hitting the streets again. This time we're speaking at the Open Video Conference , held today and tomorrow in New York City. What's the Open Video Conference, you ask? Why, it's a gathering of all the talented foks out there tinkering and pushing the boundaries of online video technology. The world of online video is pretty proprietary, but there are plenty of cool companies working toward widening the playing field and offering viewers more variety, flexibility and interactivity. [...]

Northside Festival | Day 1 | June 11, 2009 Let me just start out by saying that I appreciate the Northside Festival and everything it's trying to accomplish. That being said, it seems to be off to a shaky start. I decided to get my badge as early as possible to avoid a post-work rush. Things hadn't quite been fully set up at around 3:15 when I got to the pick-up location, but the staff and volunteers were friendly enough and helped out fairly [...]
Festival season is upon us, and in a major way. But these aren't your average hootenannies put together by the powers that be. Oh no. A new trend in the already fad-addled music biz is taking summer festivals by storm. The craze du jour? Guest curators. It's like Trading Spaces for the music world except with important, existential cultural implications! Not to mention the prosaic–but equally important–concerns that festival coordinators have to take care of. Metric saw firsthand what can happen when random muttonheads are given free reign (promises of crowds numbering 15,000 turn up [...]
Not only has Ireland, the UK and Japan been falling for the charms of Fight Like Apes of late, but the US is also starting to take notice. The band have been crossing the Atlantic on regular occasions over the past year and on their last trip they met up with our colleagues at Uncensored Interview to discuss the state of 'Beverly Hills 902102, Mexican Coke, wrestling and pop culture. Fight Like Apes : The Peach Pit . Fight Like Apes : [...]
Today we have a little rhyme, to honor mothers, yours and mine. And those of all our artists too, with motherly advice so true. Even if your song might stink, they tell you things so you might think, "If I really do my best, I'll form a band called Everest!" Everest : A Song Only A Mother Could Love . Please, don't forget the grandmas too - the ones who buy guitars for you. Just [...]

Tilly And The Wall : Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution . Seriously. Nobody likes a big ol' sausage party, not even the ladies. So you can see why the girls of Tilly and the Wall were so psyched. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2008 was the year of the rat, but in the world of indie music, it was the year of "Damn, who's that?" Everywhere you looked, there was a hot indie band with a totally hot woman up front, and Uncensored Interview was there to document [...]

Let's check in with the irreverent mind behind Uncensored Interview's blog, The Shark , for another installment of Uncensored Thursdays... Never before in most of our lifetimes has the need to maintain employment been so dire. People are literally clinging onto their jobs for dear life, hoping the bloody recession axe slices just above their heads and takes out some other unfortunate douchebag. I was walking by the unemployment office the other day when I noticed three hookers and a coke [...]
How many cool bands were there in 2008? Lots, and we talked to them all. If a band had a break out year, Uncensored Interview was there covering their rise to fame in this mercurial music industry. From Lykke Li and the Mae Shi to The Dodos and Hercules and Love Affair, 2008 represented a solid year in music for its diversity of sound and opinion on what a band should sound like in the first place. To celebrate our superb tastemaking skills, we're offering a week of reflective year-end posts that also introduce regular new features! From [...]

Let's check in with the irreverent mind behind Uncensored Interview's blog, The Shark , for another installment of Uncensored Thursdays... Hey there downtrodden victim of the current financial crisis, don't look so dour! Lots of people all across America have suddenly lost their jobs just like you and have found themselves wondering "What the fuck am I gonna do to support myself and/or my vicious $400 a day coke habit?" The first thought that crosses your mind is [...]
Yes, it's true-as Poingly first pointed out -the long-awaited Jetsonian future we've heard so much about in cartoons is finally here. In case you missed it, CNN debuted their awesome new hologram technology developed by Dagoba scientists a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. And don't tell me that I was the only one hoping Jessica Yellin would anxiously plead "Help me Wolf Blitzer! You're my only hope" before she faded out. But holograms are now [...]
Hey there downtrodden victim of the current financial crisis, don't look so dour! Lots of people all across America have suddenly lost their jobs just like you and have found themselves wondering "What the fuck am I gonna do to support myself and/or my vicious $400 a day coke habit?" The first thought that crosses your mind is to apply at the local Starbucks (the one on your corner, not the one across the street from the one on your corner) and become a part-time barista. Hey, they have health care and decent pay. [...]
Electric Touch : Everybody Vote! . In case you hadn't heard, today is Election Day and what better way to inspire you to get out and make a difference than having a foreigner tell you to vote? But seriously, get the fuck out of your house and vote today. I don't care who you're for - Obama, McCain, Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, David Cook, Walter Mondale - it doesn't matter. You still need to go to your local polling place and pull that lever. There's absolutely no acceptable excuse for not using your [...]
Some things I've been pondering (and now you can too) over this crazy (but hopefully fruitful) Halloween-Election Weekend. Why is it OK for a plumber to talk politics but not a musician? Amy Ray : Amplify . Why are record labels even necessary anymore? The XYZ Affair : Music for TV . [...]

Let's check in with the irreverent mind behind Uncensored Interview's blog, The Shark , for another installment of Uncensored Thursdays... One of the main reasons people give for not being more environmentally friendly is how much effort and money it takes to live greener. Sure, converting your automobile to biodiesel and installing solar panels on your dog might be a little extreme and therefore not for everyone, but it's not actually not that [...]
The Muslims : Sweet Axl of Mine . The Muslims might not realize it right now, but the official death of the music industry is at hand. How do I know this? Because Matty and Brian's all time favorite band, Guns N' Roses, will finally be releasing Chinese Democracy on [...]
