[Photos by acidjack] Little is known to date about the Brooklyn band Zoned Out, though they have quietly been building a following around town. Featuring current and former members of La Otracina , Grateful Dead cover band Dead Tape , Titan , Polygamist and Mirror Queen , they serve up deep multi-part psych meditations grounded in the rock aesthetic. For this Union Pool show, the band played under the swirling light show of Planetary Projections , adding to the otherworldly vibe of the night. Expect to see a new album from [...]
Tweet ' [Photos by acidjack] Sky Picnic is the psych-driven rock band fronted by guitarist/vocalist Chris Sherman and bassist Leah Cinnamon, who on this night were joined by a friend filling in on drums who did an admirable job in the absence of band regular Pete Meriwether. This Union Pool show was made extra memorable by the liquid light show of Planetary Projections , who coated what is usually a drably lit shade with intense swirls of color. Sky [...]
Tweet Follow @acidjacknyc Ultimate Vag is a group of avant-garde rockers whose core consists of Scott Verrastro of psych-improv outfit Kohoutek and co-conspirator Chris Grier. For this Union Pool show last November, they were joined by Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers , and the Don Fleming of the Velvet Monkeys , Gumball and several other bands. The foursome closed out an incredible night that also featured Suzuki Junzo ( recording ), Eidetic Seeing ( [...]

Brooklyn/Providence crew Callers released their third album, Reviver , last year via Partisan. Originally a collaboration between Sara Lucas and Ryan Seaton, Callers are now a four-piece band and if you haven't heard the new album, you can stream it below via Spotify. The band are gearing up for a March residency at Union Pool where they'll play the first three Thursdays in the month (3/7, 3/14, 3/21) . Callers are promising some exciting guests to share the bill with for these shows, including Here We [...]
Eidetic Seeing are continuing work into next year on a successor to their first LP, Drink The Sun , and since I last caught up with them at Public Assembly earlier this year, they've already made some evolutions in the new stuff. On a night filled with different psych/noise leaning artists, the Brooklyn psych rockers were easily the youngest band on the bill. If it scared them to be opening for Gibby Haynes, Dave Shuford's latest project and a Japanese guitar god, they didn't show it. Among the treats of this 33-minute set was [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2013 REV VINCE ANDERSON @ UNION POOL 484 Union Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 11PM Why is it so hard to adjust to 2013? We've been doing a slow start to this year, and it just seems to be tough to get going. Maybe the regular Monday night performance by Rev. Vince Anderson at Union Pool can get us out of the funk. UPDATE: Apparently, Union Pool is CLOSED for repairs tonight. No Rev Vince [...]
The Japanese guitarist Suzuki Junzo 's latest album is entitled Ode To A Blue Ghost , and that is an apt description for the spectral noise that Junzo wrings from his guitar. I was not familiar with Junzo before this show, but he has had a long career in the Japanese guitar underground, cranking out a host of self- and label-released records. This show at Union Pool with fellow avant-gardists Rhyton , Eidetic Seeing and the Gibby Haynes and Kohoutek-affiliated Ultimate Vag gave fans of far-out psych and noise a lot [...]

Yes, the room was absolutely miniscule for a band of the YYYs size, but the occaision was to help raise money for victims of Hurricane [...]

[Photos by acidjack] After their thrilling performance at the NYCTaper Northside Festival Showcase back in June, I couldn't wait for Rhyton to hit Union Pool last week so I could see them perform songs from their latest, The Emerald Tablet. Or at least, I assumed that would be the case, seeing that the record just dropped in September. But frontman/guitarist/other instrumentalist Dave Shuford, bassist Jimy Seitang and drummer Spencer Herbst aren't the sort of musicians to "tour an album" or pause their creative process. So, instead of Emerald tracks, the [...]

What started out as an acoustic bedroom project in NYC soon morphed into a full-on group and solidified its presence with feel-good elements of rock and pop. Founders Kevin Olken (lead vocalist/guitarist) and Ariel Loh (producer/synth) draw their musical influences from Radiohead, The Walkmen, Andrew Bird and more. Stone Cold Fox 's exceptional musicianship grew from a place of deep-seeded knowledge, rooted in the members' early experimentation with a variety of genres. The group's debut EP, The Young, is a thematic declaration of nostalgia that reflects on tales of loneliness and of leaving home too soon, an all-too-familiar chapter [...]

photos by Jessica Amaya ; words by Bill Pearis Cate Le Bon @ Union Pool, 9/22/2012 Cate Le Bon 's second of two NYC shows this past weekend was at Union Pool on Saturday (9/22) and was a woolier affair than her show at Mercury Lounge the night before . The crowd was more into it, and Cate and her band, who played against a projected VHS test pattern backdrop, were clearly having [...]

[photos by acidjack] You may not have heard of Canadian singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle , who has a new album, Castlemusic , out on Flemish Eye Records in Canada and re-released by our own No Quarter , as well as two other titles out under the band name "Castlemusic". But even if you haven't heard of her, chances are, if you're a fan of Canadian indie music, you've heard her. That is because Castle has collaborated with several high profile Canadian bands and artists, including Fucked Up , Constantines , and Doug Paisley [...]

On Saturday we went to Daddy Long Legs release party at Union Pool. The always mind blowing Bloodshot Bill was opening. I saw Bloodshot Bill for the first time back at the Norton Records party that The Sonics played. He totally stole the show then and he did the same on Saturday. Here's a terrible looking video I shot of Bill stompin', gruntin', spittin' and kicking Brooklyn's ass. &
