Unsound Festival heading to the UK

Unsound Festival heading to the UK Following tremendous success in Poland, organisers of Krakow's Unsound Festival are bringing their thought provoking event to London for the first time this year. After successfully exporting the Festival to New York the past few years, London will be the next city to host Unsound events while the Big Apple is rested for a year. While the stateside event is promised to return in 2014 there will be a tour of shows throught the US this summer and we look forward to welcoming proceedings to the UK later this year. According [...]

LWE Does Unsound Festival New York 2012

LWE Does Unsound Festival New York 2012 Photo by Natasha Phillips After a week's rest, LWE correspondents Chris Miller and Jordan Rothlein file their report on Unsound New York 2012. Now in its third year, the Unsound Festival's New York edition (the festival splits its time between Gotham and Krakow, Poland) has quickly wiggled its way up to the top of New York's music calendar. Not so much a festival proper as a loose agglomeration of shows at venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn, it doesn't feel so much like a special event as a welcome bubbling-up in [...]

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 4, April 20, 2012 – New York, NY

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 4, April 20, 2012 – New York, NY While Friday night’s sound system may have added an extra oomph to the show, it was the location of Saturday’s show that provided it unexpected transcendence. Even the idea of seeing several ambient artists in the sanctuary of a church had my curiosity piqued, but that piqued curiosity didn’t have me prepared for what was coming Saturday night. Upon my arrival at West Park Presbyterian Church, any skepticism in my mind around the whole idea was quelled. No, we weren’t about to watch some dudes sit around [...]

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 3, April 20, 2012 – New York, NY

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 3, April 20, 2012 – New York, NY Electronic music, and particularly bass music, is one of the more fickle beasts of the music community. In the right circumstance, with the right sound equipment, it can sound and feel like the best thing you’ve ever heard, but inferior technology can leave something wanting. Fortunately Friday night’s show at the Warsaw was firmly in the former camp rather than the latter. As doors opened Brooklyn’s (and yes all the acts I caught at this show were from [...]

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 2, April 19, 2012 – New York, NY

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 2, April 19, 2012 – New York, NY If my experience of the first night of Unsound Festival was defined mostly by sparseness — by mostly subdued takes on intensely emotional sounds, then my second night was the exact opposite. Though I missed out on Actress and Hype Williams at Le Poisson Rouge, the sets that I did take in at Lincoln Center were special enough in their own regard, and entirely different to the sets that I caught the night before. LXMP have yet to release much in the way of [...]

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 1, April 18, 2012 – New York, NY

Festival Review and Photos: Unsound Festival, Day 1, April 18, 2012 – New York, NY As I trekked through the spitting rain in my search for Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room, I couldn’t help but think about how appropriate the nights bill was to accompany such an activity and setting. Julia Kent’s sweeping cello music, Jenny Hval’s foreboding intellectualisms and Julia Holter’s lush ambient inflected pop music each seemed an appropriate accompaniment for getting lost in the rain in an area that’s a bit sketchier than you’re used to. That’s not to say that Issue Project Room is off the beaten path-my sense of direction just isn’t what it should be. When I finally arrived at [...]

Download: Sepalcure Remixes for Jack Dixon & School of Seven Bells

Download: Sepalcure Remixes for Jack Dixon & School of Seven Bells Jack Dixon - Seventy Six (Sepalcure Remix) School of Seven Bells - Babelonia (Sepalcure Remix) There's something cerebral about the collective sounds of  Praveen Sharma and Travis Stewart ( Machinedrum ). The duo, who label their productions under the self-coined genre of 'love step,' have familiarized themselves with the beauty of organic sounds and spacial textures. Bouncing off their debut Fleur EP , released through Hotflush earlier this year, Sepalcure bring us two new productions to divulge upon. The first of which for Londoner  [...]

Festivals in Brief: Glastonbury, Next Big Nashville, Hardly Strictly

After month of, uh, well pretty much nothing (we're just being honest), the festival gods smile upon us this week. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the 2011 rumor mill has begun churning. It looks like U2 will headline Glastonbury , while UK rockers the Klaxons could be destined for Coachella. Plus, we opened up the Bonnaroo 2011 Outlook page - because, you know, those rumors are coming too. As for the 2010 crowd, there's still a few stragglers. Both Next Big Nashville and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass went down this past weekend, and [...]

The Lovestep poster boys: Sepalcure

The Lovestep poster boys: Sepalcure Artwork by Sougwen Chung With Dubstep branching out to see how far the genre can be pushed a ton of new ideas start to surface and a fusion of appealing sounds start melting together. One group i'm really excited about is Sepalcure which is a collaboration of Brooklyn's Praveen and Machinedrum . the duo is doing a fine job of taking hints of soulful house and dubstep to create what they call Lovestep . One thing that Sepalcure has that other dubsteppers don't [...]

LWE’s Guide to the Unsound Festival NYC

Having put together Eastern Europe's top avante-garde music festival in Krakow, Unsound Festival founder Mat Schulz took on a new challenge: bringing his festival to NYC. From February 4th through the 14th, across venues and art spaces around the city, the Unsound Festival New York will offer a finely tailored selection of shows, screenings and discussions that are a refreshing respite from more populist dance music-related festivals. As one of Unsound's proud media sponsors, we're offering a run down of the festival with our favorites highlighted. Thursday, February 4th [...]
