It's kinda like the ever-so-lovely Camera Obscura is giving me an early birthday present this year with the release of their new album, Desire Lines , on June 4. I don't think there's a more gorgeous-sounding band on this whole wide earth—Tracyanne Campbell's bruised peach voice just kills me. Then they go and drop their new song "Fifth in Line to the Throne" and I'm sorta feeling guilty... I didn't get them anything. The Glasgow quintet recorded their newest with Portland's Tucker Martine here in ol' Sogtown. LISTEN: Camera [...]
For nine days in June, XRAY Fest will offer affordable—and in many cases, free—live music, DJ sets, and music-related films at various venues around town. It all happens June 8-16 , and its purpose is two fold: to celebrate and explore Portland's DIY culture and music, and to raise awareness (and possibly a little cash) for the upcoming KXRY radio station , which'll be known as XRAY.FM. That station will launch on 91.1 on your radio dial, one of four new low-powered FM signals coming this fall to the Portland area , all to be [...]

May Long Weekend is fast approaching us, and what better way to spend your guilt-free Sunday night than at Fortune Sound Club with two rising musical stars. After a mesmerizing show at Fortune Sound Club last January, electronic-artist Kastle will be returning to Vancouver with Montreal-based sensation Kaytranada on May 19. Kastle’s forward-thinking music results from his long-time love of hip-hop and R&B, fused with the magnetizing effect that garage, house, dubstep and bass-heavy music has had on him. Kastle's unique fusions will fit nicely with Kaytranada's modern take on the luscious sounds of 902s [...]
In March , I posted Alela Diane 's new song "The Way We Fall," and now there's some more information about the album it comes from, the upcoming About Farewell . The album, Diane's fourth, will be self-released on June 25 on Diane's new label Rusted Blue Records. (They are in the phone book just above Rusted Root Records, who I know you call all the time .) The album was begun in late 2011 and the first part of 2012 at Flora Recording Studios with John Askew, with guest musicians Heather Woods Broderick, Holcombe Waller, and [...]
It ain't easy to make this year's four-day series of Open Season fashion shows even more exciting than their all-star lineup already is, but Pendleton's The Portland Collection has scored a nice little feather for their cap: Joining them for their presentation of the new Fall 2013 collection on Wednesday, May 15 at Rontoms (6 pm) will be the live accompaniment of none other than kickass Portland band Lovers . This year's series takes place at some of the loveliest inner southeast venues, but they're relatively small, [...]
The Michael Jackson HIS tory Show is coming to Portland on June 7 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Renowned Michael Jackson impersonator Kenny Wizz is the star of the show. Here is the promotional trailer (more info on the show on PCPA's site .) SOME THINGS OF NOTE: • Kenny Wizz is a decidedly unfortunate name. Perhaps he imagines the name will have people recalling MJ's role in The Wiz , but everyone will agree it sounds more like he's a porn star who specializes in "wet work." [...]

Living room tours are all the rage this spring. While house shows are nothing new, we've gotten a number of great touring artists coming through town to play your neighbor's front room—and it's a fine antidote to dark, noisy clubs with bar-priced drinks. Also, some of the people who host these living room shows have dogs. Dogs make all shows better. The Undertow music collective is responsible for a lot of these shows we're seeing (the company's creative director Mark Ray lives here in Portland, where he works at the North branding agency). Will Johnson of [...]

We told you about the Mt. Tabor Theater celebrating its 100th anniversary by reopening under its original name, the Alhambra Theatre, and we also told you about the cool-sounding May Day Music Fest they've got in store to celebrate the grand reopening. But the full festival lineup is now available, and it's excellent—well worth taking a goose at. Or a gander, I mean. (Curse you, confusing animal sexual terminology.) Wednesday, May 1 —Red Fang, Dog Shredder, Sons of Huns Thursday, May 2 —Hustle and Drone, Social Studies, Glassbones, Catherine Feeny, Sama Dams, Pheasant, [...]
PDX Pop Now! turns 10 years old this year, which means pretty soon it's going to start being interested in boys and is probably already totally embarrassed to be seen in public with you. In related news, you are old. But to soften the blow to those aching creaky joints of yours, there's the annual Make It Pop! benefit concert, a show to raise money for the free music festival and the associated nonprofit. This year as always, Make It Pop! takes place at the Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, so mark [...]
![Small Sur // Labor [Single]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4878389_lg.jpg)
Sparse and beautifully atmospheric is "Labor" - one of the first songs off their upcoming record by the same name. The vocals are slow and sour, singing lyrics that have both depth and vagueness to them - drafting a thick enigma of a song which creates a desire to know the person who wrote them as well. You can pre-order Labor on their Bandcamp page, due out June 4th. Small Sur: Site // Bandcamp

The second annual What the Festival —the vibey electronic music festival—announced the lineup for this summer's event. This year, WTF will take place on July 26-28 at Wolf Run Ranch, a venue that is two hours east of Portland and apparently a few miles from last year's site in White River Canyon, just on the other side of Mount Hood. The festival sounds like Shangri-La for a certain hippie-ish breed of electronic music fan, as according to the press release, it will include tantalizing chill zones, a hookah lounge, yoga, and what sounds like the biggest kiddie [...]
Well, this is good timing: Ash Reiter , the San Francisco band that's returning to Portland on Wednesday (April 3) to play at Holocene with Wild Ones—they were just here on Monday to play the Treefort Fest afterparty at Bunk—have released a BOB SEGER COVER. Since we are all about all things Bob this week, it makes sense to post it for you here. Ash Reiter didn't try to knock off lesser Seger, either—they're going after The Big One . Also, their publicist tells us, "Ash Reiter have just begun a collaboration [...]

2012 was a huge year for electronic pop-soul band Polica . They played Sasquatch, garnered praise from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, and released their first studio album "Give You the Ghost". Moreover, after a successful live show at the Biltmore Cabaret last August, the band is returning to Vancouver for another breathtaking performance at Vancouver's Fortune Sound Club on April 7. Advanced tickets are $17 and they can be purchased online or at Red Cat, Zulu and Highlife Records. For a chance to win [...]
