There is a hotel with a cinema in London. I've been there. Twice. The Charlotte Street Hotel is lovely - stay there if you ever visit me in London (I won't pay though). The LA duo Mark Hadley & Keeley Bumford are also known as Hotel Cinema . I haven't visited them yet but I've heard their blissfully intricate pop. Yes, it's cinematic too. Bumford provides the vocals over delicate acoustic and electronic arrangements of songs which have a folk flavour. Better Run is my favourite [...]

Do you know any of those jerks who are about to jet over to the U S OF A for another year of wondrous fun of SXSW ? (that's South By Southwes t for those of you playing at home). Well I do, and I'm jealous as hell because yet again, I, a humble Purple Sneakers Sub-Editor am too poor to attend. All I can do is just close my eyes and hope that they'll at least be heading to the always awesome now-annual Laneway SXSW Party . Not [...]

Blogging for blogging's sake is kind of pointless. I don't write this stuff for the potential career benefit of accidentally stumbling upon a band before they become successful, and I certainly don't do it for the hits - I write about a band for the love of the band. I guess this is just me explaining why the blog hasn't been as active lately as it could have been. That's not to say I'm not finding lots of excellent new music that gets me excited, but I am finding increasingly less time to shout about it. Hello quiet Saturday. Hello [...]
I don't believe in love at first sight. Lust maybe, but the concept of love is bloody ludicrous. Unless, of course, it just so happens to be a song doing the stark and instantaneous wooing from first play, in which case it's all wholly plausible. Probable, even. And Dreamer, the début track from the seemingly lovelorn and appositely anonymous Hiding Face , is one such seducer: its vocal slurred and almost too stirring for words, it's as though the woebegone, rambling mumble of post-breakup sleeptalk. "When I was happy/ All my friends would come visit and actually talk/ When I [...]

About 18 months back (fuck I'm old) I blogged about garage rock Toronto three-piece Stacey Adams . You probably don't remember. I barely do. Anyway, Thomas Mazurkiewicz of that band recently got in touch about a solo project he was working on. "It's alot different from stacey adams, but im alot happier with the music," he says in the email - and he's not wrong. The title of the debut EP - 'Teddybears & Weed' - from Home Alone probably tells you a lot about its sound. It's sweet and cutesy while pretty laid-back and a bit [...]
Originally from Venezuela and formerly of the rock band Mellowhead, Jonathan Bates is forging a new mighty electronic sword as Big Black Delta . His new weapon is armour piercing synthpop that's welded to the rock aesthetics of his former self. Big Black Delta is gonna take your head right off. Now based in LA and having worked with M83 and White Sea, Big Black Delta's self titled debut album is out on 8 April. Based on what he's released so far it'll be a record I'm going to [...]

Somewhat unsure as to whether I'd bandy about the tagline 'triumphant synth rock band' were I indeed a part of such a thing, though I suppose it exudes the sort of confidence erudite Providence ensemble Magic Man illustrate in abundance on Paris. A giddy whirr in which together are swirled the unabashed euphoria of M832s Hurry Up, We're Dreaming opus (at least in scale, if not substance) and an irrefutably fist-pumping chorus, to revert to that earlier assertion the five-piece are already sounding that little bit, well, triumphant... Magic Man's [...]

Hatebreed The Divinity of Purpose Nuclear Blast 28 January 2013 by David Keevill It’s a question as old as Gandalf’s liver-spotted inner thigh, but one worth asking again; do Jamie Jasta and co. breed hate or are they themselves bred from the stuff? Either way you look at it, with the arrival of this, their seventh studio [...]
