Patrice Bäumel dropped his debut album last year after a succession of intricate EPs and a couple of head-turning guest mixes. His frosty, cultured minimal tech earned him the beginnings of a cult following in his native Amsterdam. Vapour , the title track off that LP and recently released on a 12" along with Panic , has been given two stunning reworks here by Joris Voorn and Petar Dundov , while Nuno Dos Santos throws in his off-the-wall version of Tactile for good measure. The EP opens with [...]

"Vapour" is the debut album of producer and Trouw (Amsterdam) resident DJ Patrice Bäumel, known for previous releases on Get Physical, Trapez & !K7 The album steers clear of many clichés surrounding artist albums done by dj's in this day and age. Instead of delivering a collection of dancefloor singles or getting lost in awkward [...]
Many people were over at La Zona Rosa last night grooving to Edward Sharpe , and I get the attraction-there are some good tunes there. But, for me, it came down to choosing the guy from the Unicorns , not the guy from IMA ROBOT (Edward). On top of that, I have to admit that its hard to dislike anything Islands do. Follow the jump for the full review and fancy photos. Opening band Steel Phantoms were surprisingly [...]
Here is a trippy video for the Islands song "No You Don't". The video also features American's most awkward heartthrob Michael Cera. Enjoy!
Starring Michael Cera. Post from: The Galley Boys Islands - No You Don't (Video)
If you love Michael Cera , you'll get an absolute kick out of his performance in this new video for Islands ' "No You Don't" from their latest album Vapours . Sure, you could accuse him of merely modifying small bits of his natural personality in each and every role he plays, that's obviously a valid point. If that happens to be the case with the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World flick I MIGHT lose my mind, but he's funny here in all the ways I remember loving [...]
Islands - No You Don't (Video) Somehow the awkward everboy Michael Cera stars in this bizarre new Islands music video. Definitely worth checking out! (Visit my blog for more!)
Stereogum tipped me about this, and I found it over at P4K.Apparently, none other than Michael Cera is the star of Islands' latest music video. But was it as epic as Tim Heidecker's appearance in Clues' latest music video? Confirming that would be a bit of a stretch. There are lot of drug-heavy themes in this video, so those of you who are drug-free may want to sit this one out; or maybe even use
Michael Cera has a bad trip in this brand new video from Island's excellent Anti album Vapours . Sure. Why not? Via

Illustration by Clinton Reno Man, what a big week last week! As you probably know, we presented our 35 Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums of 2009 (as well as a few honourable mentions) and it was a huge success, not just from all the wonderful comments here, on the twitters and the facebooks, and in a few emails, but also that, because of you, we were the #3 blog in the entire Elbows aggregated universe ! [...]

I've got another song for everyone today from the Montreal-based indie-rock/pop band Islands . Switched On can be found as the opening track to the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. In an interview with Pitchfork over the summer, Islands' front-man Nicholas Thorburn (Nick Diamonds) described his mindset during the making of the album as "I needed to withdraw from overblown metaphors and filling every possible sonic space. So this record is just made up of sequenced programming, synths, drum machines, guitars, and real bass. [...]

I've got another song for everyone tonight, this time coming from the Montreal indie-rock/pop act Islands . No You Don't comes from the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. Fans of the now defunct Canadian indie band The Unicorns will recognize key Islands members Nicholas Thorburn and Jamie Thompson, who are once again collaborating on a musical project. This particular song was long-listed for CBC Radio 3 's annual Bucky Award for song of the year this morning. Public voting for the Bucky long-lists will be [...]

Islands at Siren Festival (07/19/2008) Photo : Jon Klemm ( more ) DOWNLOAD : Islands - "No You Don't" (mp3) Montreal's Islands released a new record last month entitled Vapours , and in case you forgot, here's what bumpershine critic-in-residence Drake had to say about it when it came out: For those that found Islands ' sophomore release Arm's Way a bit too prog-y, I've got good news [...]

Date Tuesday, October 27th Location Mohawk Doors 800 PM Tickets $12 @ the door While the jury is still out on just how good Vapours is, we still look forward to an always energetic show from Islands . Touring behind their new album, they will also be bringing along Jemina Pearl [...]

Dearest Reader, I haven't posted too much here of late. Actually the only thing I've contributed thus far to this magnificent deck of tapes is my fascination with Canada via Berlin funksters King Khan and the Shrines. I just haven't been exposed to any music lately that is worth writing over 100 words about. So I've decided to take a different tact. Don't worry, you'll get your new music picks, after all that is what this site's all about. However, first things first. I write to you in a dire state of frustration. I find that [...]

Ever since its release a while back, I've been listening to this album on a daily basis. Islands ' Vapours is essentially my get-ready-in-the-morning record! Gets me in the greatest possible mood with its very accessible, short pop songs with great hooks. My favourite is definitely the super sweet Tender Torture . It leaves me with that fuzzy feeling and as I listen to the lyrics, there's a permanent smile stuck on my face (even if I try to hide it because people in the bus tend to [...]
