Eleven albums into a career that has flown mostly under the radar, Ron Sexsmith has had his praises sung by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Elvis Costello. Sexsmith writes rueful, self-deprecating songs about the painful joy of being in love. Long Player, Late Bloomer is more of the same, but only better with a strict no filler mandate among the album's 13 tracks.. The title song "Long PLayer" is a nod to his own survivor's instincts and his slow, gradual climb to the middle. "I'm a late bloomer, I'm a slow learner [...]
Since my review of last year's Coachella lineup garnered so many brilliant responses, I would be shirking my duties as an online journalist if I ignored the big announcement that was made this week. Two weekends in April will once again transform the Californian desert into the most unbearable environment on Earth. And, no, I'm [...]

CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW In this video, Elzhi takes his audience back in time to the Mid-90's, and into Maurice Malone's Hip-Hop Shop. The Shop was the heart of the Detroit hip hop scene where many collaborated, battled and shared music. Music executive and artist manager Jae Barber, also a Detroit native, provided an authentic picture of the world Elzhi revisits in his nostalgic spin on Nas' classic song, "Memory Lane." The video includes rare visuals of various artists such as Eminem and Royce da 5'9. Amongst the many artists included are the late Baatin, Proof [...]

VA - The First Rock And Roll Record By Rosie Duffield The origins of rock and roll are somewhat murky, and are the cause of many discussions amongst musos the world over. Though not a definitive answer to the question “where did rock and roll begin?” The First Rock And Roll Record certainly takes in a cross-section of genres to help fuel the fire on that age-old question. This isn’t a rock and roll record, despite its name - but don’t let that put you off. [...]
Mixed in with a dozen other as yet unlistened-to tapes I grabbed from the basement a month or so ago, I found one five inch reel which certainly stood out. It contained a recording of a TV show, which I've since learned aired in November of 1959, hosted by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, titled "The Golden Circle". This show does not appear to be readily available, as far as I can tell, online or in video collecting circles. It should be interesting to those who enjoy this era of music, but it's truly "Gold" due to one moment which occurs [...]

Ho ho ho, assholes! With the Christmas holiday coming up this weekend and we're already two days deep up on the Hanukkah tip, it's very much time to drop the annual The Decibel Tolls Holiday Mixer . You know the deal - a carefully curated collection of skewed, brain-burning, monolithic Christmas gems that totally sleigh. Get it?! Sleigh? Slay? It's a homophone, you guys! Ugh... never mind. Tough crowd. Anyway, these yule-time canticles exalted on high can crush shopping malls and magically spike egg nog, true story. For this year's mixer, you'll recognize you'll recognize some jams from previous year's mixers, [...]

This list was inspired by the guiding light of Liberace, Billy Martin, Ali, and Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. A Zip file will be arriving in the late morning, so check back here. See Also: The Top 50 Best Hip Hop Songs of 2011 (#50-26) 25. The Game ft. Tyler, The Creator & Lil Wayne - "Martians Vs. Goblins" Goblin was compelling. A week away from Christmas, it is time to really set the mood, and there is no legendary voice better than doing just that than Otis Redding's . He turns the most family oriented time of the year into a love affair. Bing Crosby's version of "White Christmas" may be the best selling single of all time (no joke), but if you really want to feel it, then let Otis give it to you. Of the innumerable renditions, this soulful take actually gives a sense of longing. Redding is alone on Christmas day and looking for someone to share [...]
This is from an album called Seriously Westcoast Vol. 2
This is from the same album.

One of music’s most singular songwriters and storytellers is given a fitting tribute that everyone can enjoy.

Popcorn Ska Vol 2 Having already chucked up efforts from the likes of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Madonna and, er, Jools Holland, the shady people behind the Two Tone / Ska 7" series have moved in a more interesting direction for two sixties popcorn ska EPs, the second of which is looked at here. The four tracks all date from around 1964 and feature American teen/doo wop acts treading their toes in slightly different musical waters. Nothing [...]

The Numero Group goes to Cleveland, finds true DIY gems. The lovable lot at the Numero Group is at it again with another layer of American obscurity that will leave your jaw dropped and your ears hungry for more. The time is 1958 to 1993, the place is 12202 Union Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Boddie Recording Company, which issued nearly 300 LPs and 45s in its impressive run. Additionally there were more than a million hand-pressed records, 10,000 hours of tape and...

My parents brought back a few CD's from their trip to Jamaica, and the one that I liked the most was the one with "Golden Hits" scribbled on it's face. Only one problem: no track names. I know a few of the songs, but lets make it a little fun. See if you can figure out the song titles and artist, mostly just by your own knowledge and ear for good music. Try not to cheat!! Who knows, maybe we'll even send you some iLS stickers.... Enjoy: Track 01 [...]
