Whole Earth (Vegan) Bakery spot becoming Italian Restaurant

Whole Earth (Vegan) Bakery spot becoming Italian Restaurant Back in 2007 we were worried that Whole Earth Vegan Bakery on St. Marks was facing eviction , but the East Village landmark survived, for almost another six years at least. We were bummed to just read the following on EV Grieve : Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen , which had been at 130 St. Mark's Place since 1991 (34 years in business total), closed for good on Dec. 29 , as we first reported. Aside from rising rents, business had been down... and, of course, Sandy didn't help [...]

Sónar festival changes venue for first time in 19 years

Sónar festival changes venue for first time in 19 years Barcelona's Sónar festival has changed its daytime venue for the first time in almost two decades. The Spanish festival, which is split between Sonar-by-Day and Sonar-by-Night and hosted in two different settings, has shifted its location during the day to the Fira Montjuïc at Plaça d’Espanya. While many are upset with this move, stating that the original venue in the city’s Museu d’Art Contemporani (MACBA) was what made the festival unique, this new setting is a 10 min journey nearer to the nighttime venue. Act announced for the fest so far are [...]

Insomniac returns once again with the Alice in Wonderland-themed Beyond Wonderland event on March 16. The new venue, still in San Bernardino county (directly east of Los Angeles county), will hopefully prove to be a seamless transition for Insomniac and its fans. Tickets for the event are set to go on sale today at 12pm PST, 3pm EST. No word on a lineup yet, but you [...]

Niki & The Dove Soar at San Francisco Gig at the... Niki & The Dove Soar at San Francisco Gig at the Independent After many missed opportunities, I finally got the chance to experience Swedish duo Niki & the Dove ’s live performance last week at San Francisco’s awesome venue The Independent. Their 2012 album Instinct  was such a beautiful collection of varying textures, sounds, and melodies, which could also be said about their live performance. Singer Malin Dahlström’s voice, stage presence, and style is like a fusion of The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson, Cyndi Lauper, and Courtney Love…and I mean that in the most flattering way.  [...]

Venue Review: Phoenix Concert Theatre

Venue Review: Phoenix Concert Theatre 410 Sherbourne St Toronto ON M4X 1K2 http://www.libertygroup.com/ph oenix/phoenix.html There are a few mid-tier (1000ish people) concert venues in Toronto and the Phoenix Theatre is one of them. Located just north of the notorious Regent Park, the Phoenix has been a consistent home for concerts from bands just on the cusp of stardom (or just on the cusp of irrelevancy as the mainstream media would have it). Overview Essentially, the Phoenix is a large divey looking night club turned into a concert hall. The main area is a [...]

Green-Wood Cemetery damaged during Sandy, collecting $$

Green-Wood Cemetery damaged during Sandy, collecting $$ Located just a few blocks below Prospect Park, Brooklyn's historical Green-Wood Cemetery was one of the many places that took a hit from Hurricane Sandy. On the night of Monday, October 29 and into Tuesday, October 30, 2012, Hurricane Sandy battered much of the East Coast, including Green-Wood Cemetery. Trees were uprooted; branches were snapped off; monuments were toppled and shattered. Green-Wood president, Richard J. Moylan tweeted early Tuesday morning that it is the worst damage he has ever seen in over 40 years on our grounds, adding that "more than 100 [...]

The Future of Music

The Future of Music We've all heard the stories. Well, anyone who pays any attention to the music business at all will know. We are living in a period of transition while the dinosaur that is the 'music industry' finds a new way to exist. From those 'horrible downloaders' to the death of the CD to the somewhat surprising resurrection of vinyl, the industry is in a state of flux. With the exception of mega-acts like U2, Coldplay and such, the people paying the price are the small artists. They are finding their way. And I think for many of us, watching [...]

Preview: Trey Anastasio TAB Fall Tour

Preview: Trey Anastasio TAB Fall Tour Please welcome our newest contributor, Robert Janoski , to preview this month's TAB Tour. For the 14th year of his namesake solo group’s existence, Trey Anastasio  and his TAB ensemble will embark on a nine-show mini tour starting tomorrow at The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan. In 2012, the early months that in 2010 and 2011 were reserved for TAB tours were given over to Trey’s symphony outings. These shows revealed nuances to Trey's Phish and solo compositions unique to orchestral settings, and had fans pleasantly surprised. However, most still yearned for the frontman to [...]
