Happy three-day weekend! Yes, you have Monday off, but the better news is there's so much music to keep you busy. We're talking Lasers and Fast and Shit at the Empty Bottle , the Chicago, I Love You fest kick-off, Ravenswood Remix , Rambos at The Burlington and more... Let's get dirty... FRIDAY LASERS AND FAST AND SHIT Much [...]
Some free VERMA tunes today, and who doesn't want ...tranced out, drone-y, repetitious, atmospheric psych with some Hawkwind-esque synth textures over the top. Get your live VERMA fill. Mr Terry Larkin did an amazing job recording our show from last week at The Hideout. Tune in ya drop out. Links; Verma - Live at The Hideout on 2012-06-21 Verma Verma @ FaceSpace BUY STUFF!!!

Verma have seemingly made a bit a of departure from the last time I wrote them up. Back in October, the Chicago psych-rockers dropped S/T II , an EP of improv jams that included the kraut rock-esque take, "Space Is Open," which featured a hard-driving beats over spacey synths and guitar. But on Verma's recently released new video for "Thunder," from the band's upcoming full-length due later this summer, their approach to psychedelia takes a chilled out turn. In fact, "Thunder" screams neo-psychedelic or trip hop with it's steady beat and hazy synth melodies at times [...]
If you're not already firmly planted on the E+ bandwagon, it is time to reconsider that decision. Every time I listen a track by the spacey, psych-pop outfit - which features members of Disappears, Heavy Times and Verma - the quality gets better and better. E+ and Giant System lighting designer Aleks Tomaszewska's (Magic Key, Aleks + The Drummer) efforts merged during this performance of "Substance D" to create a powerful atmosphere where the music conjures faraway forces as pure white light and dark shadows dance around the band members for equally [...]

We've been anxiously awaiting music from E+ , a new project featuring members of Disappears , Heavy Times and Verma , and finally today our anxiety has been quenched. Last week the band announced on their Facebook that they've completed work on a new EP, which was recorded by The Ponys / Bare Mutauts / Football member Jered Gummere. And today, the band unleashed the first song from those recording sessions, "Too Many Voices." "Too Many Vices" is a well crafted exercise [...]

If you missed experimental psych poppers E+ at Schubas last week or just want to relive the experience, the band posted a few videos from the gig on its Facebook page. E+, a Chicago group made up of members from Verma, Heavy Times and Disappears, conjures dark and mysterious forces while dabbling in distortion. E+ track "Substance D" emits a steady hypnotic rhythm and plenty of groovy synthesizer embellishments. All you need to do is sit back and sway in your chair.

Yeah, it might be pretty, um, snowy outside. But, like, there's some totally awesome shows going this weekend. We're talking Psych Fest at the Hideout, The Runnies at Ultra Lounge, Gaberdine at Subterranean and more! Let's go... FRIDAY THIRD EYE VISIONS: CHICAGO PSYCH FEST 3 The best of Chicago psych, kraut and rock that implements sonic elements that are on the fringe of the aforementioned [...]

If there was ever an indicator of how robust and healthy Chicago’s psych rock scene is, look no further than this year’s third annual Chicago Psych Fest adding a second day of festivities. Brooklyn Vegan Chicago revealed yesterday afternoon that this year’s edition, dubbed “Third Eye Visions,” will once again take place at The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia Ave). Kraut rockers CAVE and experimental jammers Dark Fog headline on Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan. 21, respectively. Also [...]
Deathsport by Verma Best known for their unfettered psychedelic sounds, locals Verma are back with a new EP that brings them into some pretty heady territory. Titled S/T II , the EP features three improv jams, two of which will be featured on an upcoming split with Shapers and Soundings that will be available from the new Paramita Tapes label soon. All three tracks, or jams rather, are long and winding pieces that occasionally veer more towards the krautrock spectrum. One track in paritular that's we're digging is "Space [...]

All's well that ends well. Sure, it rained all week, but it's nice and sunny outside with just a tiny nip in the air. Naturally, that means it is time to party down while we still can. This weekend, especially, is a doozy. There are so many great shows that it is almost impossible to choose among them. Some of the shows we're all abuzz over are Gypsyblood at Liar's Club , Dead Milkmen at Congress Theater and Local H at the Metro . Let's hop to it, [...]

Whoa, dude. It's the weekend. Better get your groovy self out to some shows! There's plenty o'options including the mind-altering two days at the Hideout , better known as PSYCH FEST II , Pilsen's swinging duo Ornery Little Darlings at the Empty Bottle , singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith at Schuba s and so much more. Let's get to it, shall we? FRIDAY [...]

Smith Westerns Hope everyone has a fun and frightening Halloween last weekend. Now, it looks like we're in the dog days of Autumn and the stretch run of 2010. But all that really means is it's time to gear up for some amazing shows yet to come for the Windy City! And this weekend is no different. Our picks for top weekend shows this time around include Smith Westerns at Lincoln Hall , Brendan Benson at the Bottom Lounge , Danzig at the Congress Theater [...]

One site that we really enjoy always checking out is Giant System Chicago , who offer up excellent looking and sounding video of up-and-coming Chicago bands rocking out in their own practice spaces. Well, the Empty Bottle asked Giant System to curate a show featuring some of the bands they've filmed. The rockin' lineup includes Rabble Rabble , White/Light , Black Math and Verma . Here are those band's respective Giant System Sessions: Rabble Rabble , White/Light , Black Math , Verma . [...]

Welp, Chicago, here are three reasons to wear some lead socks as to not get blown away reasons to hoof it on over to Fireside Bowl this evening... 1. It's a triple-header of three excellent, albeit completely different, Chicago acts tonight as Fireside Bowl returns to its roots as a music club. Headlining the show at The 1900s whose latest album, Return Of The Century , is beautiful little record that has it's foot in quite a few musical ponds. As my review indicates , sure it's easy to [...]

Three if-you-get-lost-between-the-mo on-and-New-York-city-are-you-i n-a-plane reasons to come, sit awhile before heading off to the Whistler tonight... 1. Chicago's Mako Sica , I believe, are LoudLoopPress's first two time reviewed band. I gave a hardy thumbs up to Mayday at the Strobe and an even hardier thumbs way up to the follow-up Dual Horizon , which did give me the creeps. Discount what my pop said in the comments section for he does not speak for our generation. Plus, I put him in his place. [...]
If you haven't been watching Giant System Chicago - you've been missing out. The project's purpose is, and I quote, "to make motion pictures of bands playing in their spaces." In the past, they filmed some excellent Chicago groups including the Disappears and Verma doing what they do best - rocking out in their practice space. Well, their latest finds warbling psych-garage outfit Rabble Rabble performing and rousing version of their tune "Doubt It", and be sure to catch them next Monday for a free show at the Empty Bottle .
