When Europop engineers Radioclit first teamed up with Malawi's joyously vibrant songster Esau Mwamwaya to endow all open of ear and mind with their Warm Heart Of Africa LP in '09, its thirteen tracks translated to an outstandingly harmonious cross-cultural mêlée with each song jocularly, vivaciously jostling with those surrounding it. Mwamwaya's role was both vocal and concentratedly focal, with only the odd guest spot from ex-Dirty Projector Ezra Koenig and our very own conventional genre-eschewing mogul M.I.A. shading the Malawian's luminous ubiquity. MTMTMK , in respects divers, is therefore a rather contradictory effort in both tactic [...]

The Very Best - MTMTMK By David Atkinson In 2008 the production team of Etienne Tron and Johan Karlberg, also known as Radioclit, requisitioned the Malawian owner of their local junk shop in London to sing on their latest mixtape project. Fast Forward to the end of 2009 and that very same mixtape, Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are The Very Best , had incredibly been downloaded nearly 1 million times. 2009 also saw the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Warm Heart of Africa which found [...]
Check out Nadastrom’s propulsive remix of "Yoshua Alikuti," a track from The Very Best’s upcoming album MTMTMK. The remix takes the original a step back, looping and manipulating Esau Mwamwaya’s vocals to render them a ... read more
While you probably won't ever get a chance to hear this in a club, or even on the radio, we can at least sit here and fantasize about how awesome this would sound with blown out speakers at your favorite dance spot. Oh, did I get ahead of myself? Well, The Very Best are back thanks to the spiced-up dance tune, "Yoshua Alikuti". Esau Mwamwaya compliments this Johan Hugo production perfectly, as the video is set in Mwamwaya's hood of Lilongwe, Malawi. Is anyone else catching the jabs at Lil Wayne's "A Mili"? MTMTMK is due out in July.
After releasing their latest mixtape, Super Mom , The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya and producer Johan Hugo a.k.a Radioclit) are back for more, this time premiering a new track and video, on Pitchfork, plus announcing their newest album, MTMTMK out July 17 on Moshi Moshi. Dig their new video for "Yoshua Alikuti" above. This is starting to sound like a more mature Esau, but still keeping within his Malawi roots. While not as hook-laden as some of his previous efforts, we are HUGE Very Best supporters and can't wait to hear more from this record. [...]

So you might have heard about The Very Best putting out a new mixtape to celebrate mums. Or moms. Anyway, they did and it's pretty good. At heart it's still a mixtape, so there are hits and there are misses, but on the whole it is good. And there are a couple of reyt good 'uns on it. To celebrate the release they're putting on a party in London tomorrow night. Oh yeah, and it's free. And if you're one of the first 40 people to turn up you'll get a free T-shirt. The only catch is that the whole [...]

Large hugs and free ice cream for The Very Best, who brought their celebratory freakout to the Independent last night. The DJ + singer + hype man setup doesn't always bode well for a good time, but these guys rocked it. Oh, and DANCERS. Two that were brought by the band and many in the crowd, who brought ourselves. Very necessary. And not only were The Very Best handing out good vibes, they were handing out free beer, wine, and good news: they've got another mixtape coming out. Their original [...]
post and pics by A-a & Kate Maxwell Friday evening was the kick off show for The Fader Presents One Step Beyond series at the American Museum of Natural History. Featuring live performances by The Very Best, Theophilus London and Ninjasonik, a sold out crowd danced under the planetarium sphere in the Rose Center for Earth and Space within the museum walls. Fortunately we had a QC photographer on site to capture the sights in addition to a private photo shoot with Esau Mwamwaya of [...]

Sukcesy gwiazd o afrykańskich korzeniach (M.I.A.), udane kolaboracje europejskich producentów z afrykańskimi wokalistami (Buraka Som Sistema) i w końcu ogromna popularność gatunku UK Funky, świadczą o swoistym renesansie afro beatu.

The Very Best is a collaboration between Malawi's Esau Mwamwaya and electronic duo Radioclit that was formed in 2008. Their sound is described as a unique mix between afropop, hip hop, electronic, and dance. The Very Best's 2009 release, Warm Heart of Africa , involved contributions from M.I.A. and Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig. Here is the new video for the first single from the album, "Warm Heart of Africa", which features hilarious green screen dancing by Esau and Ezra: Related posts: Fever Ray - "If I Had [...]

The Very Best's debut album "Warm Heart of Africa" still was one of my fave albums of 2009, even if it never ranked that high on my "Best of 2009"-list. And here's (finally) the official video for the title track off the album, featuring Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig: Here's also a little remix of the song I haven't featured earlier. The Very Best ft. Ezra Koenig - 'Warm Heart of Africa' (Alan Wilkis Remix) YSI [...]
Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig rocking with Esau Mwamwaya (The Very Best). It's raining cats, dogs and owls here in the Northwest. This spruces up a gloomy day. U like?
I love Esau Mwamwaya (who doesn't though, right?). I love green screens. I like Ezra Koenig . Put all three together and you got yourself a pretty fantastic (and cheap) video. Also, get to a Very Best concert, now.

“Blast that Christmas music! It’s joyful and triumphant.” — The Grinch Sometimes I feel that way about world music. All the rumbling percussion and mysterious African/Latin lyrics (they sound fun at least…) ultimately just remind me that my life is not that joyful nor that triumphant. I thus have a hard time connecting to the music. At least that’s my theory. Depressingly enough, I find myself all for such music when you add a slight dash of hipster magic to the mix. I suppose this says something about [...]
the very best - julia [the very best (aka radioclit and singer esau mwamwaya) have done it again, throwing in afrikaan sounds with modern furnishings, their latest single is the perfect blend of their diverse mix. brilliant!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

After much anticipation (and a few cancelled CMJ shows) we finally caught The Very Best at Santos Party House last Wednesday. A collaboration project between British duo Radioclit and Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya, The Very Best follows a recent musical progression where DJ and production duos team up with singers and MCs to create full-length albums under a new moniker (think Major Lazer or N.A.S.A.). Like Somalian singer and rapper K'Naan, The Very Best succeeds in bridging a cultural gap that makes African music more accessible to a western audience. The Very Best fuses the traditional [...]
