I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him." Manzarek formed [...]

Proposed Earth Day Flag Preceding the mass media's adoption of the "green" movement by almost forty years, Earth Day celebrates and demonstrates support for environmental protection. Now in its 43rd year, the initially proposed date for the internationally-observed holiday was March 21 - the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere - but the established date was chosen when Senator Gaylord Nelson - who later won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work - held an environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. Although there's no officially designated Earth Day Anthem, we've compiled [...]

Happy Weed Day, everyone! Though the origins of "4203 aren't quite the stuff of legend (it was not actually police code for marijuana use in progress), it certainly has become the rallying cry of pot smokers and is celebrated daily without anyone's help. But the day 4/20 is likely to raise more blunts, and hopefully more awareness, now given Washington State's more relaxed laws on marijuana possession, use and even purchasing. Of course, not everyone will spend today burning into a peaceful bliss, but you can all enjoy this special "I Got High" video playlist in honor of [...]

Kepler, one of the many office pets who frequent and occasionally staff KEXP Today is National Pet Day ! Pets demand attention, but not all creatures are so lucky. National Pet Day is a time not only to "celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives" but also to "create public awareness about the plight of [...]

Few artists resonate so strongly with KEXP listeners and all Seattle music fans as Kurt Cobain . His band, Nirvana, wasn't the first to break out of the Northwest or did their groundbreaking breakthrough, Nevermind , sell the most among their contemporaries, but Cobain probably represented more of the local attitude of the early 902s than anyone else. Born in Aberdeen, an old milling town near Washington's coast, and shuffled between fragments of a broken family, misunderstood and disenchanted at school, Cobain found a home in the 802s NW punk scene and would eventually change not only Northwest [...]

The announcement was spurred by a new play and history project created by Gretta Harley (Maxi Badd, Danger Dens), Sarah Rudinoff, and Elizabeth Kenny called These Streets , a fictionalized story heavily inspired by the lives and music of the women of the Seattle grunge scene of lat 80s and early 90s. Aztec/Mayan calendar ( source ) NASA thinks otherwise , but according to the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar, the world will end today. Even if the Mayans couldn't rightly predict their own demise, who knows? We may have only one more day left on Earth. If that's the case, we're going out swinging! All day, KEXP DJs are playing songs to soundtrack the end of the world, and we've collected some videos to go along with some of their apocalyptic soundtrack picks. It's all about partying, the end of the world, and partying at the [...]

Perhaps no other artist has brought Eastern music to the West like sitar master Ravi Shankar . His tutelage of George Harrison in the mid-602s kicked off a lifetime of cultural exchange. While rock bands like The Beatles were incorporating Eastern sounds in their music, Shankar himself was composing for western-style orchestras back home and collaborating with a wealth of other musicians, including composer Philip Glass, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, sarod master Ali Akbar Khan and many others. Ravi Shankar died yesterday at age 92, but his music will live on for all of time. Read more about his life [...]
