Well before Dave Tompkins decrypted the DNA of the vocoder , it existed as Los Angeles' preferred funk steroid. No telling how many times the Troutman's soundtracked my juvenile declensions. Power 106 played "Computer Love" enough to make me wary of my shoddy Intel 486. Through the tubes Snufflupagusing out of his mouth, Roger was able to turn the talk box into the only instrument to make robots malfunction from an overdose of salt. That, the movie Wall-E, and any full project Wale has released since Mixtape About Nothing . Virtual Boy are dubiously old enough [...]

My last night in Pennsylvania featured a long evening of conversation between my mother and I. She told me stories of the past (J-Fur loves the one about how I held all my energy in at school so that when I got home I just exploded) and family history that I had never heard before. We also talked a lot about food and cooking. She told me about meeting one of her former co-workers for breakfast once a month and enjoying a dish called baked oatmeal. I questioned her about this Pennsylvania Amish style dish that I had [...]
With a name that sounds like audible chocolate, Jacques Lu Cont aka Stuart Price aka Thin White Duke aka Les Rythmes Digitales aka Paper Faces aka Man With Guitar (phew) brings you a free track of epic proportions (people need to use that more often when describing boobs). This track is a vocodered masterpiece. It is [...]

rockets - "on the road again" (download) Synthy French disco from 1978. A great vocoder-heavy cover of the classic Canned Heat track of the same name.

paul white - "the doldrums" (download) Another record that dropped this week. This one from producer Paul White , who I've featured here before . This time around, Paul breaks out of his usual instrumental format and enlists some raps from artists such as Danny Brown , Guilty Simpson and others. This one is a little less rappy, and more sing-songy than the others (oh, and it has vocoder in it as well). buy

Our friends over at Binary have a new artist Short Circuit who they are releasing the debut album for 'Late Night Drive' next Monday, May the 23rd . They sent along the record for us to review and I'm digging it. Vocoders, synths and dancey beats . What's not to like? They are giving away first single "How We Speak" via their soundcloud that you can check out/download below. [...]

jonzun crew - "ground control" (download) I posted another track from this same record toward the end of last year, but this record is just too good to only post one track. "Ground Control" has a much different vibe than the anthematic "We Are the Jonzun Crew," although it still has the Jonzun Crew 's signature vocoded vocals. If you can find this record, buy it.

roger troutman - "i am superman" (download) It's been a while since I've posted some Roger Troutman . This one is a cover of The Clique 's 1969 track "Superman," which was later made famous by REM . Roger's version adds some of his classic vocoder and more bounce, flipping it into a completely new song. buy

gay cat park - "i'm a vocoder" (download) Italo disco classic from 1982 about what it's like to be a vocoder. Even the reissues of this 123 are hard to find. According to this Facebook page that has recently popped up, there might be more great Gay Cat Park songs released from the vaults eventually. For now, this will have to do.

tony banks - "by you" (download) Tony Banks is best known for his role as keyboardist for popular prog-rock-turned-soft-pop band Genesis, but few know about this gem of a record called The Fugitive that he released back in 1983. This is the only solo Tony Banks album where he sings all his own songs. He also incorporates the vocoder and the LinnDrum on a few songs, which gets it some extra bonus points from me.
Hague electro + Italo + jakbeat pioneers I-F & DJ TLR are getting mixed up in Sydney and Melbourne for their 2011 Australian tour

Den Track hab ich mir aus nem alten Topfriend Mixtape von unserm buddy Chrome gezockt & warum? Tja weil der Grandmaster remix so derbe fresh daher kommt! Grandmaster Flash - The Message (Datashat Remix)

I forgot how good this LP was. Was going through the crates looking to sell some records when I re discovered this PPP "Look Of love" Its like PPP went inside the minds of J Dilla, & Roger Troutman and created a session based off the 2 styles. Paying homage to the Head Nodders this boom bap track was overlooked and underplayed. The concept of the "Rewind!" compilation series is simple: Ubiquity's favorite artists cover their favorite tracks, revealing their influences and bringing classic tunes up to date. Just as with volume three, this [...]
I've said before a few times that I have a weakness for vocoders, and I always have, I don't know why but something about that sound just makes everything AWESOME. (well, except speedbass maybe) and today, I'm going to dig through my collection to find my favourite examples of it in use from the the early stuff to fairly recent tunes. We've come a long way, baby Up first is MSTRKRFT, who used it a whole bunch on their first album, The [...]

Up until now, you've probably never heard of Bruce Haack . And that's a crime. But it's a name you'll be hearing more and more in the coming months and years. Proto-hiphop, proto-vocoder, pre-dating Kraftwerk. Building his own modular synths in the 602s. Writing surreal, hallucinatory children's songs. Experimenting with peyote, making a psychrocktronic concept album about Lucifer and "powerlove". What a fascinating character. Stone's Throw and Peanut Butter Wolf are putting out Farad: The Electric Voice on October 19. From the [...]

I was playing some Boards of Canada recently & came across the song "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country." I love the use of the vocoder in that tune. Being a sci-fi geek & an electronic music dork, it makes sense that I would like songs with vocoders. So I set out to find enough vocoder tunes for a mix. The result is " Vox Electronix ". The vocoder is is an analysis/synthesis system, developed in the 1930's, that dramatically reduces the amount of information needed to store [...]
I was listening to Triple J not too long ago when I heard the RADDEST tune ever. As soon as I got home i frantically google'd and found nothing. I felt deflated, but thanks to soundcloud, I was able to personally stalk Flatwound and I got the track. Hells yeaaaaaaaaaah. They're from Sydney and p.s. [...]
