Today's song of the day is a tribute to the ephemeral state of good indie music. Today I simultaneously discovered Harlem Shakes and mourned their passing…apparently back in 2009. The Black's gritty garage-Americana is like a slightly rusted saw that still works, cutting deep into whatever needs cleaved — in this case starry-eyed romance and not a little bit of rock 'n' roll history. Over the past few years plenty of bands have broken up or called it quits. Of all the bands that have done so, there is only one that I can say I was legitimately sad to hear about: Voxtrot. International Waters is an indiepop band from Austin, Texas, led by Mitch Calvert , formerly of Voxtrot . They have recently released their debut-album "19943. You can listen to the whole album on the band's Bandcamp -page. The band lists artists like Felt, Aztec Camera, The Smiths, Orange Juice, Girls and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart as references of their sound.
Rising from the ashes of Voxtrot, Austin's International Waters is building speed on the strength of their just-released full-length, curiously entitled, 1994 . The video for Green Lights is kinda all over the map, but the song suggests that 1994 is a record to be hunted down and digested at length. I've always felt a strange connection to Ramesh Srivastava. We've never met, but I did review his band back in 2005 when he was touring under the name Voxtrot. It was my first New York show and, perhaps more importantly, the first time I felt like I'd been firmly ahead of the curve on a band with the chance to break into the iTunes of thousands of people who simply didn't know them yet. It seems a shame that the Ramesh Srivastava-led Voxtrot were only able to complete a lone LP during their seven years; a tenure (fairly) definitively concluded via Srivastava's message to fans April 2010.
