RUMTUM - Beat Tape One Man, this fresh string of beats is keeping me going today. Columbus based RUMTUM just dropped this beat tape. I’m glad it’s labled Beat Tape One , inferring that there might be Two and Three, etc. to follow. The flow is nice and easy, but intricate enough to keep you interested. Download the tape for free via his SoundCloud . And don’t forget RUMTUM’s collaborative EP with Monster Rally [...]
Monster Rally, as a solo agent, has consistently impressing me with his ability to turn tropical jams in high-grade head-nodders. Lefse Record's side label Waaga has just signed the prolific Monster Rally and his Ohioan cohort Rumtum for a 7-song EP and this breezy little single "Raindrops" is the first slice from it. Monster Rally's [...]

Monster Rally & RUMTUM - Raindrops [ photo ] This is truly a collaboration made in heaven. A tropical, beat-laden heaven. Premiered on YVYNYL yesterday, I was overly excited to see that this wasn’t a one track wonder. But rather nice long EP, getting the full Waaga treatment. You can pre-order the nine song EP, which releases in February, here .

Monster Rally 's form of tropical-induced sample pop is practically a drug itself. It's subtle direction and exquisite focus on textures and rhythm is pretty infectious. That infectiousness is heightened when the Ohio musician teams up with fellow Ohioan experimentalist John Hastings, who can be found as RUMTUM . Their fresh collaboration on brand new track "Raindrops" is one of the most interesting and oddly soothing songs that has surfaced this year. Even if this is another sampling affair, the track has an analog aesthetic that's beyond refreshing. Our friends over at Waaga Records are releasing the full-length from this collaboration entitled MR [...]
Tycho Hours (Teen Daze Remix) Do you like this song? Undoubtedly one of the most talked about releases of the day is Teen Daze’s highly anticipated six song EP A Silent Planet which he released through Lefse’s sister label Waaga Records . In celebration of Jamison’s album dropping, he also released a remix of Tycho’s [...]
Blithe Field's new album silently imploded in to the indie-sphere late last month, and I'm just getting around to letting it's melancholy beauty enfold me. I'd posted "Crushing" in an earlier column, and find myself equally swooning over "People I Love." Spencer Radcliffe seems to use the constant tick of a metronomic device to signify [...]
Take me to the Balearic Islands, to the tickling feeling as you arise from sleep in the mornings. Urges one feels when slipping on some of Pandit's recordings. There is as much transcendence in the translucent environment in "Kathyrn, My Love" as there is complexity in its whimsical ambiance. Call it shoegaze, dream-pop, or what have you, but it's a visual and sensory spectacle nonetheless. Out to Waaga Records yet again.

Teen Daze - Surface Teen Daze 's new record A Silent Planet out on Waaga August 9th
Blithe Field's Beautiful Wave album from a while back was a foundation of my listening for a good solid couple of months and thus the announcement that Waaga, the ambient best-pal of Lefse Records has announced another full-release makes the tiny hairs on the back of my neck bristle in anticipation. "Crushing", the first single [...]

At long last, Ben and I have emerged from the depths of Finals-induced hell to bring some actual activity to this blog. Whether or not such collegiate woes are a valid excuse for our downtime (they probably aren’t), we’re now back to provide you with your required dose of music, snarkiness, and long, overwrought adjectives. Due to the enormous amount of submissions and releases that landed while we were out, I’ve gathered some favorite new jams into this all-encompassing catch-up post. To anyone we missed: we’re sorry. mp3: Blithe Field - Crushing Blithe Field is the moniker for 19 year-old bedroom producer Spencer Radcliffe. On his new album Two Hearted , Radcliffe utilizes samples and field recordings to create a beautiful world of hazy nostalgia that is at once lackadaisical and rich with emotion. Two Hearted will be released June 28 on Lefse/Waaga . Check out more from Blithe Field at bandcamp .

I'm in love with Blithe Field , the musical project of 19 year old Spencer Radcliffe. His sound channels a unique blend of acoustic and electro music; glitchy at times with a hazy, distant vibe that's absolutely stunning. His press release said it best, Blithe Field sounds "if Gold Panda ditched Ableton to record outdoors on an old sampler that didn't work at speeds above 120bpm." We couldn't agree more. His debut album for Waaga entitled Two Hearted drops June 28 and is available for pre-order over at the Lefse store .

Waaga Records just signed 19 year old Spencer Radcliffe, aka Blithe Field, to their label and announced his new LP, Two Hearted. Mark your calendars for June 28th and be sure to visit your local record shop. The opening track, Crushing [posted below], is a clean combination of field recordings, smooth beats and airy acoustic guitar. Recommended for late night barbeques with friends or personal reflection or getting blazed. Or a sweet dose of all the above. MP3 :: Blithe Field - Crushing TWO HEARTED IS [...]

"Spectra" takes me back to late nights of 2007 listening to The Field's From Here We Go Sublime . I can see why Peter James, aka White Mountains, chose the New Hampshire mountain range as a source of inspiration. It serves as quite a backdrop to his flavorful ambient techno. As I sit here in an office under this terrible lighting, the music of White Mountains is a welcome escape to beauties of our planet. White Mountains - Spectra And here is a delectable mix by him to top it off.

Nowadays it's increasingly common for artists to record and produce entire records in the confines of their bedrooms, basements or out-houses. With the declining cost of equipment, accessibility of production programs and general growth of knowledge allowing for easier and more personal methods of creating music. In Lance Smith's case, he chose to take his alter-ego Pandit into a studio to record and lay down tracks for his debut album, however many of his primary efforts as a musician, were originally spawned in the bedroom. Whilst last year saw lo-fi inspired pop music taking over the blogosphere, 2011 [...]

Hailing from Beaumont, Texas, Lance Smith crafts a wide range of sounds that lean toward the purest of dream-pop under the moniker Pandit . A few weeks ago, Smith flew up to Boise, Idaho, to partake in some serious hang time with us and filmmaker Tyler T. Williams . It was a memorable weekend shopping for records, eating good Thai food, as well as an evening sporting animal costumes inside clubs and up in the hills as thick fog rolled into the [...]

Alan Reilly at State Magazine recently informed me that Bryce Isbell has 52 RELEASES under his belt and he's ONLY 22. Make that 53 then as this Polybreak digital-only 73 (is that allowed?) gifts us two great beat-based tracks: one a collaboration with Gray St. Germain Gideon (previously of Ghosthustler) and Letherette pop up again to remix 'Friends'. Another fine release on Waaga too. It can also be downloaded directly . I recently posted a tune from the Solar Bears / FUR collaboration . A [...]

Two fervently independent US-based labels. In the blue corner, Waaga with a roster of acts that include FUR , Spirituals , Florene , and more. In the red corner, Lefse Records home to Neon Indian , Keepaway , Low Sea , Phaseone , Sunglasses and The Delta Mirror . In the centre, Matt Halverson serving as referee overseeing PR for both labels as Banter Media with his buddy Tyler. Matt's taste in music is exceptional so State asked [...]

Waaga are another label who have piqued interest on my radar lately with releases from FUR and Spirituals , Sunglasses and soon, the Low Sea . This week sees the label release Florene's Homemade Extacy , the Denton, Texas duo's album and their first proper release on Waaga after a series of EPs, singles and cassettes (one is downloadable ). It's a mix of the kind of electronic live band rushes provided by the likes of Fuck Buttons and Holy Fuck with dark atmospherics, industrial sounds [...]

Ming Ming Dance Company - Crookline "Crookline" is the latest track from Boston's Ming Ming Dance Co and it's a 9 minute long slow burner jam of the highest awesomeness. They got that new/old psych drone sound everyone loves kinda like Sun Araw, Predator Vision, or Emeralds. But this one's real chill, like a loping burned out blues number. Warped and fucked guitars get their groove on while some synths get all noodly. You can [...]
