"Dad Rock" started as a snarky label that music snobs & critics lobbed at aging classic rock-influenced bands like Wilco and The National . Maybe because it's Fathers' Day weekend or because I will be a new dad next month (if due dates hold true), but I'm joining Jeff Tweedy in embracing the once-derogatory term. So here's a mix of some modern dad rock, all from the last three years and all of which I happen to love. Download the entire mix here . [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive Jason Merritt, FilmMagic When discussing Heaven , the seventh full-length from New York rockers The Walkmen , it's difficult to ignore the ever-present influence of indie-folk rockers Fleet Foxes . Prior to even meeting the Foxes, Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser was a fan. Then The Walkmen opened for Fleet Foxes in 2011, playing cushy theaters he says his band could have never filled on their own. [...]
Inevitably, I always find an album or two sometime after the new year that I wish I had discovered before my year-end best list. Father John Misty falls in that camp for me this year. The only explanation I have for ignoring a fairly well-known artist last year is guilt by association. Father John Misty is Joshua Tillman , the former drummer for Fleet Foxes . Because I'm not a big Fleet Foxes fan, I assumed I wouldn't like Tillman's own band. I was definitely wrong. Father John Misty is dark, intense, [...]
This is sweet - the Bands in the Backyard crew got to sit in on a Light Heat rehearsal in preparation for some dates the band has coming up in New York (January 12 at The Cake Shop) Philly (February 23rd at Johnny Brenda's). Joining them are guest players Peter Bauer of The Walkmen on ... Continue reading

Surprisingly - we've yet to profess our love for J. Tillman's(former Fleet Foxes drummer) latest project Father John Misty . Thankfully - a couple of recent television appearances are providing us the opportunity to mention one of Top 3 albums of 2012. Don't cheat your ears and mind - treat them to Father John Misty's Fear Fun after you take in these performances from the eccentric J. Tillman. You can catch the theatrics of Father John Misty [...]
In a music industry where it’s the norm for bands to implode and artists to spiral into self-parody and irrelevance before there’s a grey hair on their heads, Nas, The Walkmen, and Fiona Apple are bravely wading into the mysterious, murky waters of adulthood.
I'm generally not a fan of posting Urban Outfitters' sponsored material, but an exception had to be made for this new Walkmen video, helmed by director Sean Pecknold, who put together the excellent video for Fleet Foxes' "The Shrine/An Argument." On his latest outing, Pecknold uses "Jerry Jr's Tune" as a fitting intro to "The Love You Love," one of the standouts from The Walkmen's latest album Heaven . If you haven't checked out Heaven yet, I highly recommended doing so. Come years end, I expect to see it in practically every critic's Top 5.

Before their new album Heaven was released, The Walkmen dropped a bunch of songs from it to promote its release. Now we're on video number two, after the memory-lane-walkin' "Heaven" came out in May. "The Love You Love" is the next single from the band's fantastic new album Heaven and was directed by Sean Pecknold, the brother of Fleet Foxes main dude [...]

American indie rock band The Walkmen have released their 7th studio album Heaven , and with it 13 new tracks with which to beckon both long-time fans and newbies. If you're new to The Walkmen, you'll find they've a different kind of rock sound that harkens back to 60s music, surfers…something indefinable bearing a sweet touch of yesteryear. The new release opens with the band crooning the subdued, highly listenable "We Can't Be Beat." With its simple, likable harmonies, it has a retro sound and tasteful electric guitar to finish out. [...]

The Walkmen - Heaven Over the course of 6 studio albums, The Walkmen have always managed to reinvent themselves with each release. Their latest, Heaven , is certainly a departure from the rest. This is no group of young, messy rockers. They're dads now. Reliable. Consistent. The guys have mellowed out. This is the new Walkmen sound, and it works. There is no shortage of beautiful and surprising moments on this album. The first track off the album, We Can't Be Beat , is a slow starting track that you almost think is over before it picks [...]
Okay, the first thing I absolutely have to talk about before anything else is this darn cover. I believe the idea was to have a classy cover that complements this Frank-Sinatra -influenced album. This album artwork is so trashy; it looks like a little girl did it on Word. It isn’t even properly centred. Look at the word 'Walk': the 'K' barely fits on and the 'W' has a whole load of space. And, have they changed their name to 'The Walk Men'? Why on earth is their name broken in to two words? I don’t [...]

The Fleet Foxes frontman is keeping himself busy with projects like this, which are quite evidently at the top of his street. -James Godwin, May 10th, 2012 Related articles Robin Pecknold - 'Olivia, In A Seperate Bed' (flick-thru.com) Filed under: Music Tagged: Fleet Foxes , Phil Ek , Robin Pecknold , Walkmen
Here's another taste of the Walkmen's upcoming album Heaven. This time around the track features a contribution from Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold. It's a lot more folky thank we're used to expecting from the Walkmen. In fact they may have out Edward Sharped Edward Sharpe on 2012 albums. [via 24B]

Fat Possum Records is pleased to release "We Can't Be Beat," the lead track from The Walkmen 's upcoming album Heaven , on May 29th. The record is the band's sixth and was produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Shins, Band of Horses) in Seattle. The Walkmen just celebrated their 10th anniversary and are still comprised of the same members that started the group in 2001 - drummer Matt Barrick , multi-instrumentalist Pete Bauer , singer Hamilton Leithauser , guitarist [...]

Aside from having a name that stirs memories of the 90s, a simpler time when cassettes were the norm and the Walkman a revolution, THE WALKMEN are also an indie rock band to get excited about for the raucous, guttural music they've been making for over a decade After a short hiatus, their new long player Heaven is due for release on June 8 though Inertia , for which the band have released a taster. If this two-minute snippet is indicative of what's to come, we're in for a more subdued sound from [...]

Ten years after The Walkmen 's debut album, the lauded New York quintet is slated to release its latest effort, Heaven , on June 5th via Fat Possum / Bella Union . And as with many bands ten years in the making, the youthful moodiness and naivety has been replaced with a more mature, seasoned sound fit for the grown men and fathers they've all become. The album's first single and title track, "Heaven," features bright, elated guitar melodies, toe-tapping drums, and an infectious chorus of "Remember, remember/All we fight for," that is [...]
Indie rock vets The Walkmen have announced their seventh studio album, Heaven . The new collection is out June 5 on the great Fat Possum Records. The album was produced by Philip Elk, who in the past has worked with Modest Mouse , The Shins and Fleet Foxes . It's probably not a coincidence then, that Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold was called in to lay some vocals for a track called "No One Ever Sleeps."

Big news! The Walkmen have announced a new album, Heaven , that will arrive on June 5th through Fat Possum/Bella Union. 2010’s Lisbon was heralded by many as one of the year’s best. Heaven only promises to be better with frontman Hamilton Leithauser saying, “The detachement you can feel throughout our younger rec-ords is gone. We felt like it was time to make a bigger, more generous statement.” The new album was produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, the Shins, Modest Mouse). Check out the cover art for the new album below.
