I've never been to Athens, GA but from all accounts, it is a special place full of a rich history. Patterson Hood has enlisted the help of a number of friends in putting this song together. Here is the backstory on the song from the PR release. Some of the greatest songs were written to give voice to anxiety, despair and unwanted change. "After it's Gone", a new single just released by Patterson Hood and the Downtown 13, was inspired by the threat of a Walmart in the heart of the downtown that nurtured the band's career. [...]

The Guardian's Lost In Showbiz returns to the flop of Alex James' cheese festival , which has gone bankrupt. And guess who's left out of pocket? Erm, the local school. Marina Hyde explains: But perhaps our greatest sympathy should be reserved for the local school, Kingham primary. The school organises its own annual music festival, and was asked to use its contacts to book performers for the Friday night at Harvest. It duly provided seven bands. (How quaint that the acts at Alex James's festival were being provided by the local primary. Does he not [...]

The 25th Street Station development in Remington can now claim its first victim. After serving our community for over 20 years, Chestnut AID Pharmacy's (Chestnut & 36th St.) owner Patrick Burke closed his doors yesterday. Why did he close? He says one of the reasons is the 25th Street Station's Wal-Mart. Burke, of Owings Mills, said a combination of too many federal regulations and the impending threat of a new Walmart at 25th Street Station combined to leave him too fatigued to continue operating the store he has owned since May [...]

From Next Level of News : "In April, social media startup Kosmix was acquired for $300 million by retail giant Walmart. Kosmix had built a semantic web platform called the " Social Genome ," which organized social media data. The platform powered 3 products: TweetBeat, a real-time social media filter for live events; Kosmix.com, a topic-based search engine; and RightHealth, a health search portal." The URLs for TweetBeat and Kosmix now re-direct to a new site called WalmartLabs.com . The tagline of WalmartLabs is "Social + Mobile + Retail". Innovate or die, [...]

In late 2003 Walmart took on Apple 's iTunes store and launched their very own MP3 music store. Now a little over 7 years later Walmart has announced plans to shutter the store. According to the New York Times , Walmart will close down the download store on August 29. "We recently notified our music partners that we've made a business decision to no longer offer MP3 digital tracks as of Aug. 29, 2011," the company said in a statement. Walmart [...]

After seven years in obscurity, Walmart put up the white flag and decided to close the virtual doors to its mp3 store. In a dreary statement, the retailer explained "After eight years in business, the Walmart Music Downloads Store located at mp3.walmart.com will close on August 28, 2011. All content in the Store will be disabled and no longer available for download from the store." To put it all in perspective, Walmart was bringing up the tail end in digital music sales, raking in one percent industry share and ranking behind companies like Napster. [...]
Wal-Mart is shutting down its MP3 store at the end of the month. While the download store has failed to gain traction, its an unexpected move by the retail giant who has been expanding other digital offerings. Perhaps they'll partner with a streaming music site . MOG, Rdio or Rhapsody would be top guesses. Western Technology Investment (WTI), a VC for clients like Google and Facebook , has invested in Livio Radio a developer in-car net radio products and services. ( RAIN ) [...]
What happens when the deep discount shopping you thought you were getting isn't as deep as you thought? One thing proponents of the proposed 25th Street Station development in Remington have been telling folks is that we need the low-cost, discount shopping opportunities that only a Wal-Mart can bring. Nevermind the inherent flaws in such reasoning or the well-documented hidden-costs of Wal-Mart's low prices. The simple question is, are Wal-Mart's prices really that low? Not according to a number of studies that have come out recently. Customer Growth Partners has found that [...]
You hear it all the time - "Why should our tax dollars go to help these people when they don't contribute themselves? After all," the argument goes, "they pay no taxes. So they should get no benefits. They don't need tax breaks." The irony is, this line of rhetoric is usually leveled at the poor (who actually do pay taxes in some form or other). However, new data from the IRS shows this agrument could be used just as easily (and more accurately) against America's millionaires. 1,470 millionaires paid no [...]
