Warren Zevon : Knockin' on Heaven's Door [ purchase ] There are dozens of songs penned by Bob Dylan that can be considered standards, but to me no other Dylan song has the "universal appeal" or an all-encompassing feeling quite like "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." The song is originally from the 1973 soundtrack to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and describes that thoughts and feeling of a dying deputy. From what I can tell, it's been covered by over 400 different artists ranging from [...]

That's right. If it hadn't been for a miserable little tumor, Warren Zevon might be having cake and wearing a silly hat today. Unfortunately, Mr. Bad Example couldn't be with us. My interest in Zevon began with his 1987 album Sentimental Hygiene . I was in college and the fact that the members of R.E.M. served as Zevon's backing band legally mandated my curiosity. The album left me slightly underwhelmed but intrigued enough to snag a copy of the compilation A Quiet, Normal Life: The Best Of Warren Zevon [...]
Happy Birthday to Warren Zevon, whose graveled voice I never truly appreciated until his final album was released just before his death in 2003. Known for his pithy, sardonic wit in song and social commentary - enjoy every sandwich , his oft-quoted insight on dying which would later become the title for the first of two posthumous tribute albums, is a terse encapsulation of that observational mastery which shines through his back catalog - the man who released just twelve studio albums in 35 years was nonetheless a respected mainstay of the rock circuit, celebrated by his [...]

It has always been my intention here to not only put up a couple songs from an album, but also to encourage folks to track down a hard copy, be it cd or vinyl (preferably vinyl), as the original always sounds way better than these compressed mp3's. I find mp3's too tinny sounding on the high end and thuddy and muddled on the lows. As far as portability and file size goes an mp3 can't be beat, it's the ultimate for taking your music anywhere, but the sound quality leaves much to be desired. A lot of the stuff I [...]

It would be safe to say that maybe other than The Beatles, no other artist has been covered as much, and by as many different and diverse artists as Bob Dylan . On January 24, the songs of Mr. Zimmerman will once again be interpreted for a new 80 song compilation, that will help celebrate and support the 50th anniversary of human rights organization Amnesty International . The four-disc set, entitled Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International, will feature 75 newly recorded tracks from arguably one of the [...]

Wanted to put this up again, because it's fantastic and there were a couple requests for it. Happy Sunday afternoon. Always been a fan of Zevon. Listening to Excitable Boy as a kid got me started. As I became old enough to understand just how funny, disturbing and moving the lyrics were was when I realized the genius of Zevon. If you've never spent any time with his music, this is a great place to start. Here's a Warren Zevon show from The Record Plant in Sausalito in July of 1978. [...]
Watch Ween, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Widespread Panic and others perform live covers on Halloween.
Ok, we know it might be a bit cliche to post a video of Warren Zevon performing Werewolves Of London on Halloween, but I recently finished reading the highly recommended Zevon bio I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon and have the music of the late singer-songwriter on my mind. While there are a slew of versions of this tune online, we're going to go with a particularily fiery live version of Werewolves from an October '82 show at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey. While we've [...]
A Video to Watch Now Warren Zevon visits the Burrito King in L.A., 1977. You know we love burritos!

Alice Cooper and friend Face it - rock and roll isn't that scary. Unless you're an uptight parent, or some kind of preacher. Rock music about Halloween, and the stuff that comes with Halloween, is goofy and funny, but it isn't frightening. Although I must admit, I got a bit of a fright the first time I saw Adam Lambert perform ... but thankfully that's not rock and roll. Or is it? Bwahahahaha! Back in the day, there was Alice Cooper. He had an act that involved boa constrictors, decapitating baby dolls with a [...]

Face it, Halloween isn't very scary. It's usually pretty funny - this year there will be people dressed up like characters from Harry Potter , or as Charlie Sheen, or maybe even Arnold Schwarzenegger or Rick Perry or Ron Paul. Surely some women will dress to emulate Lady Gaga, or maybe even Amy Winehouse or Kate Middleton. Then there will be that one guy who will dress up as Anthony Weiner with a crucial part of his costume enhanced (or removed). Ha, ha. As I said, real funny. Here is the best Halloween blog I've [...]

We've put together a playlist that will make the scene jump for a spooktacular good time. Music Player: [...]

Since 2007, Daryl Hall has been hosting jam sessions with a diverse mix of artists at his 200 year-old-plus house in Dutchess County, New York, and recording them for a monthly web series that's been appropriately dubbed Live From Daryl's House . The series, which is now 46 episodes strong, has seen the likes of everyone from Grace Potter to Sharon Jones to Booker T. Jones to Toots & The Maytals stop by to play. The show will now make the leap from the laptops to television sets, as it will be heading to late-night TV airing in [...]
Warren Zevon doing Leonard Cohen...the old masters at work. While the two auteurs approach to their craft is obviously different, Cohen and Zevon were far from diametric; working the same seam, exorcising tales of the human condition - not to mention their own demons - through song. Not surprisingly, the similarities and contrasts of Harry [...]

Warren Zevon is one of the most underrated classic rock musicians of all time and those who manage to discover his music often deem him a genius - and with good reason, although he never had much commercial success. Zevon released his self titled second album in 1976. The album was produced by Jackson Browne and has since been labeled a masterpiece in the Rolling Stone Record Guide . By the time this album was released he had already spent 10 years in the biz as a songwriter. When [...]
I've been trying lately to make Those Who Dig more of a direct reflection of what I'm truly into and love at any given moment or throughout my life. Which probably means totally random posts with little commentary. On that note, Warren Zevon rocking the shit out of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Cadillac Ranch" in Jers in 1982. Great audio on this one. Sometimes I forget how possessed and energetic Zevon was. This video clears that right up.
