It's coming on 2012, and all around us, bloggers tout their 2011 taste, jostling to be the best and first match for your own preferences, inviting debate over position in the ranks. And so, as we do every year as the calendar comes to a close, we struggle with the conceit of The Year In Review, surveying a year's worth of posts, writing a never-ending series of half-hearted drafts, flinching every time we approach the task, yet feeling guilt every time we put it down. My reluctance to pass judgement isn't a cop-out. [...]

I like cover songs. I like the melodic folk of The Watson Twins. So how could I not like Chandra and Leigh's new all-covers EP Night Covers? The Watson Twins have a unique style. Ever since their stellar cover of The Cure's oft-covered "Just Like Heaven", I've been interested in hearing them add their vocals harmonies and rootsy arrangements to other songs. On Night Covers, they've chosen a

It's shaping up to be a strong Spring in the world of tributes and cover albums, and good thing, too - though the single-shot covers continue to pour in daily, other than Reid Jamieson's recent tribute to 1969 , the Cowboy Junkies' too-heavy-to-be-folk tribute to Vic Chesnutt, and a mid-February Sara Lov popfolk covers compilation , it's been pretty dry at the album-length intersection of folk and coverage. But apparently, in the world of cover albums, when it rains, it pours. Over the weekend, we featuredThea Gilmore's stunning take on Dylan's seminal [...]

Gary Calamar hails from the Bronx, NY, and grew up a constant presence in local record stores. When he moved to LA in the early 80s, he got himself behind the counter, managing stores and nourishing the flourishing culture of the record store. In April 2010, he released the book "Record Store Days" , inspired by both his life and tastes as a consumer and connoisseur of vinyl. Calamar is of course much more than a consumer and author. A KCRW volunteer and DJ since the mid '90s, Gary hosts "The Open Road," a Sunday [...]

Share MORE milkshakes please! I have been a fan of The Watson Twins for as long as most everybody else has... Since their album with Jenny Lewis Rabbit Fur Coat way back in 2005. I also love Jenny Lewis, but I don't think anything the three of them have done apart since has been nearly as good as Rabbit Fur Coat . They should really get back together and record another album. Seriously! The Watson Twins [...]
