Cover art by Talia Grip Plyaz is as country as it gets. His accent is as thick as the models he enlisted for his " Step Out " video, and his references are chock full of Southern-fried slanguage. With Volume 2 around the corner and Purp, Wind And Fire not too far behind, it looks as if the ATLien will be making waves this year. And it begins with 6 Pack: Volume 1 , presented by DJ FU , Governed By Loyalty [...]
Still trying to figure out how an artist can look hipster but be hood-certified? Listen to "WHATDAHELLRDOZE" a few times repeatedly to trace the outline provided by Grip . It's like the character Fonzie Fonzarelli was reincarnated & updated to rap, giving out style tips on how to achieve cool without forcing it. Over simple but effective production by The Weathermen, Grip joins forces with fellow Atlanta scene vet & friend Tuki of Hollyweerd to pontificate the finer points between cool & uncouth. 6 Pack Vol. 1 [...]
A weekend night on the town dressed in casual clothes. Nothing too prim and proper; newly pressed shirt and pristine kicks as key parts to your wardrobe. Haircut game proper from a trip to the barbershop earlier in the day. The vehicle wiped down by hand and the ashtrays emptied. Seats reclined and moving at a steady but slow pace, ready to take in the city lights & night life. Setting things in motion with "Step Out," Grip Plyaz makes a play to dominate your pregame playlist with this soulful ode to living the life. [...]
Sean Faylon is like Hip-Hop's version of the Visa card®. Not only is always everywhere you want to be, he never has a problem charging his skills to the game and if you're not looking, he could be all in your pocket. But as proven with his new fat tape Be Everywhere , he's more than just a party animal with access to every video shoot, album release, guest list in town. Still, he uses his Rolodex to his advantage as guest vocals from Freddie Gibbs , GLC and production [...]
Before technology caused dramatic change, artists and producers would all hunker down in dark studios, bouncing ideas off each other to craft music. It's in that spirit that Ruby Hornet's DJ RTC and co. gathered artists across the map to do short, on-the-spot recording sessions they've chosen to compile and release called Closed Sessions Vol. 1 . With "Happiness Over Riches," Bun and GL take production by The Weathermen and an obvious chemistry to lay down their version of lyrical scripture. The first Closed [...]
This Friday, World Unknown returns to Brixton for its second outing. Featuring a fantastic music policy of Belgian new beat, cold wave, synth-pop, italo jacking acid house, techno and electro, it makes a nice change to hear about a night that is offering something a bit more thoughtful than fidget. This could be because ' World Unknown is a monthly session bringing back a tougher, more physical, emotional and cerebral synth-based take on dance music to London's musical landscape' - about time too! If the night is anything as good as this mix by Andy Blake then it'll be [...]
We have a new personality here at JTTS, and his name is Ricky Mortis . You might know him from hosting Leedz shows in the Bean, or from holding down Karmaloop TV , or from getting hella unprompted shit from Cage at a recent show . He'll have his own JTTS account soon, but I'm personally introducing him here. Check the audio below - it's Ricky's response to Cage and the much-discussed situation that transpired at Harpers Ferry (plus the audio of Chris Palko talking mad shit about him). He also [...]

Video: Grip Plyaz ft. Aleon Craft – Step Out
G rip Plyaz teams up with fellow ATLien, Aleon Craft, for the first single from '6Pack vol. 1: A Prelude to Purp, Wind & Fire,' titled "Step Out" produced by The Weathermen. This is a pretty accurate representation of Atlanta's underground social scene, often confused with the Hipster scene. Location: Decatur to MJQ Concourse. This video is pretty much a normal night during the week. Be it Wednesday, Friday or Saturday from the styles, to the people to the spot. I see Grip and A.Leon are on their pimp-ish, and the [...]

Finally Weighing In on the Lame Cage/Vast Aire/El-P Back-And-Forth
I'll come out and straight say it: alternative rappers suck at beefing . There have been classic underground feuds - I particularly enjoyed the unprovoked war between the High & Mighty and Masta Ace - but overall I'm generally disappointed in what transpires. Rap beefs are for ignorant commercial MCs who are willing to shamelessly boast (and lie) about their murder tallies - not for cats who sling metaphors, or who even know what metaphors are for that matter. One exception, of course, is Eminem, who recently beat Mariah with an eloquent shovel ; otherwise I [...]
